Newsletter Message from the headteacher Important (but less interesting) things have pulled me away from classrooms this week but I still managed to squeeze in 9 or 10 visits. I happened across a year 7 lesson where they were looking at prospective careers which they may carve out for themselves. Perhaps predictably at the moment one young woman had decided to be a YouTuber. This comes into the list of careers that didn’t exist a few years ago. As it happens, I have some experience of being involved in the development of a YouTube phenomenon. A few years ago I was working at a school when a young student called Morgan began to build a reputation for himself as a social media YouTube star (he later became ‘Morgz’ about whom some of your children may have heard). Morgan came to see me one day to discuss his burgeoning career. He explained that his online activity was actually beginning to create some revenue. I thought he meant revenue as in enough to fund a visit to sweet shop each week. However, when he revealed the amount of revenue he was generating it became clear that he could actually afford to buy several sweet shops. Anyway, the point is that Morgan worked unbelievably hard to achieve what he did. To his viewers his work looks effortless, but I know from my discussions with him that by the time he became successful he had created hundreds and hundreds of hours of footage. Often this would involve him working through the night (with the obvious impact on his school work). He also spoke about the high levels of resilience needed to withstand the negativity and scrutiny which has to be faced by those with a heavy online presence. In short, I think he was working as hard as anyone else does who wants to build a successful career. Nothing comes easily - especially not YouTubing given the competition. It can be a bit of setback when I talk to a student who says, ‘why can’t schools teach us what we want to know?’ When I ask what they want to know they usually reference ‘how to pay tax’ and ‘how to get a mortgage’. I try not to be glib but usually tell them that tax usually gets taken before they can do anything about it and that to understand mortgages they should first save £30,000 and then call a mortgage advisor (we do, by the way, cover both of these issues through our curriculum). The other thing they currently reference is ‘climate change’. We also cover this in all sorts of subjects. For example, in a Y7 science lesson this week two students were debating the relative merits of wave energy versus biomass energy- see images below.
I have to stop writing now as I have my own lesson to teach and need to make some last minute adjustments to my plan. I hope you have a good weekend. A Marsh Headteacher

Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Climate change On 15 February a national ‘student strike’ took place which was designed to draw politicians’ attention to the need for further action to arrest climate change. Ultimately the event affected a very small number of students. It did, however, create a moral dilemma for school leaders. On the one hand we are keen to encourage students to take an active interest in global issues such as climate change. On the other hand we know that if students are to make a positive contribution to their planet they need to get the skills and knowledge required to do so, and this comes through attending school. Finally we are aware that, if students go offsite during the school day when they are in our care, their safety is compromised and this is unacceptable. We are advised that similar action is planned later in March and so we have decided to respond in the following ways: 1.
Hold events in school on Friday 15 March to raise awareness of climate change and enable students with genuine interests in this issue to express their views in a mature and responsible way.

We want to continue to use this issue to draw attention to the work that the school and its students are already doing to reduce our carbon footprint. For example, despite our students’ interest in this strike we haven’t yet seen significant numbers of students sign up to our recycling rota. School leaders will continue to meet on a regular basis with student parliament and other student groups to increase support for ongoing sustainability projects in the school. We may plan further one-off events to synchronise with ‘student strikes’ internationally.

We are aware that some students may wish to participate in an externally planned protest or similar on 15 March. If this is the case, students should obtain permission from parents/carers not to attend school at all on that day. We would need parental permission in writing by Thursday 14 March at the latest and this would be recorded as an unauthorised absence. We do not agree with the concept of children missing school but, ultimately, you may decide that their attendance at a climate change protest is a form of education which is worth missing a day of school for. Clearly we would only expect parents/carers to grant this kind of permission if they had planned a visit to a protest or similar. A child sitting at home is not helping to prevent climate change per se, and may be contributing to it through increased energy consumption. In all other cases students should come into school and stay in school. Any student who leaves site during the school day without permission will receive a significant consequence.

Newsletter Year 9 immunisations A reminder that the immunisation team will be in school on Monday 11 March 2019 to give year 9 students the following two vaccinations:
Meningococcal ACWY (Men ACWY) vaccine to protect against four different types of meningococcal bacteria that can cause meningitis.
Teenage Booster vaccine to help to protect against diphtheria, tetanus and polio. Diphtheria is a serious disease that can damage the heart and nervous system; tetanus is a painful disease affecting the nervous system which can lead to muscle spasms and cause breathing problems and polio is a virus that attacks the nervous system which can cause permanent paralysis of muscles.
The most common side-effects following the vaccination are pain, swelling and redness at the injection site. Other mild side-effects include mild fever, rash, headache, dizziness, sickness, diarrhoea and muscle ache. Paracetamol and Ibuprofen can be taken as prescribed unless contraindicated. If you are still concerned, contact your GP or NHS Direct on 111. If you have any questions or would like further information, the immunisation nursing team (based at Repton) can be contacted on 01283 707170 (select option 3 – immunisations). All parent consultation evenings take place in the sports hall at Lumsdale and appointments can be made between 4pm and 6.45pm – further details will be issued to year groups nearer the time.
Year 10 parent consultation evening – 12 March at Lumsdale Parents/carers of year 10 students are invited to attend the year 10 parents evening that will be held on Tuesday 12 March from 4-7pm in the sports hall at Lumsdale. Students have been issued with appointment cards to make appointments between 4pm and 6.45pm.

Newsletter Highfields PTFA Quiz Night – Friday 29 March Highfields PTFA invites parents, teachers and students (accompanied by adults) to a PTFA Quiz Night at Designate on Smedley Street on Friday 29 March, starting at 7pm. Tickets cost £15 for a team of up to six people and are available from both school libraries or email Louise Robinson at lrobinson@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk. All money raised will go towards projects currently being supported by the PTFA, such as new microphones for drama and music productions, new books for the school libraries, and a new drinking fountain at upper school site.

Newsletter Student Parliament news Food Bank Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the food bank collection points at upper and lower school sites. We have made our first distribution to the Jigsaw food bank last week and it was much appreciated by them. If you have any further items, please continue to bring them in as we will regularly be dropping off the items collected. The Jigsaw food bank initiative provides practical help with a purpose, taking donated goods, in particular canned and dried foods and providing support to people during a crisis. These may be people unable to provide for themselves due to loss of income, employment or benefits. If you would like to donate food, Jigsaw have provided the following list of items they need:

Newsletter Go Lead On Wednesday 6 March year 9 ‘Go Lead’ sports leaders led South Darley and Elton on the Primary sports evening.

Newsletter Key Stay 2 High 5 Netball The KS2 high 5 netball competition took place today, Friday 8 March – full details to follow in next week’s newsletter.
Sports Hall Athletics Highfields sports leaders in years 8 and 12, along with the PE apprentices, led sports hall athletics activities for the School Sports Partnership year 5 and 6 pentathlon. 40 students attended from local primary schools and students selected now will attend the SSP Talent Academy in the summer holidays.

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.

Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or pastoral manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year.
