Parent/Carer Notices Ski Trip to Davos, Switzerland 15-23 February 2019 Following the success of this year’s ski trip to Davos, we have decided to return to the same resort next February half term. The trip is open to all year groups and the cost will be £965 - letters with full details of the trip are available from the office on both sites for any student interested in going.
Year 7 Parent Consultation Evening at Lumsdale (Upper School Site) The Year 7 Parent Consultation evening takes place on Tuesday 17 April in the Sports Hall at our Lumsdale site from 4pm-6.45pm for parent/carer consultation appointments. Students will be given appointment cards and reminded to make appointments with subject teachers. The tennis courts will be open for additional parking and can be accessed from the top car park at Lumsdale. Please can parents/carers ensure that when parking they do not block vehicular access to the track up to the tennis courts – thank you.
Invitation to parents/carers of students with SEND: SEND Coffee Afternoon – Wednesday 11 April from 2pm at Starkholmes We would like to invite parents/carers of SEND students to our SEND coffee morning between 2pm and 3pm on Wednesday 11 April at Lower School site, where we will discuss Learning Support and SEND provision. You are welcome to pop in for coffee and bring along your ideas and suggestions. If you are interested in attending, please contact the school reception staff to confirm your attendance on 01629 581888.
Standards and Expectations at Lumsdale We have written to parents/carers of students in Years 9-11 with a few specific reminders about our standards and expectations with regard to uniform and conduct. Following recent disruption to normal school routines during a short half term it is important that we work together to ensure that we maintain high standards during the last crucial term of the year. As a quick reminder please note that hoodies and non-school jumpers should not be worn in school and will be confiscated if worn. Thank you for your continued support.

Newsletter Easter Revision Sessions GCSE Physical Education & Moderation Preparation Date: Venue: Time:
Monday 26 March 2018 Lumsdale Sports Hall and L4 10am until 2pm
This session will look to improve knowledge of a range of topics covered in the examination specification. This will split into test 1 and test 2. We will also look at exam technique by breaking up exam questions and answers to develop understanding. Revision techniques will be discussed/practiced. Those who are in the moderation sample will also be able to start preparations. Please bring booklets, books, pens and Trainers. With regard to GCSE PE Moderation, the examiner will select a random sample of students to observe. The date is the 23 April and preparation and hard work on the day are essential. Students requested MUST turn up in correct kit if they are selected and perform to the best of their ability. If they do not turn up or treat it without the due care it requires, they are jeopardising not only their own marks but the marks of the rest of the class. Resources, tasks and revision for GCSE PE is also available for students to access on Show My Homework.

Year 11 Revision Materials GCSE Dance Revision Students can collect a copy of ‘How to revise for GCSE Dance’ from Ms Wise.
GCSE English Literature Revision English Literature revision materials are now available on 'Show My Homework' for students to use over Easter. These include 'Ten things I know...' resources for 'A Christmas Carol', 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'An Inspector Calls' which cover themes and characters and PEASI materials for the poems in the poetry anthology.
Year 11 Revision Evening Resources Revision material has been emailed to parents/carers who have requested electronic copies of the resources from the recent Year 11 Revision Evening. Newsletter School Closures Thank you to parents/carers for your support over the recent weeks with school closures, in particular to accommodate the decision to close school on the morning of Monday 19 March, which we acknowledge led to inconvenience and concern on the day. We never take a decision to close school lightly and were determined to keep the school open this Monday. After site visits on Sunday afternoon we felt confident that we would be able to open as normal following the adverse weather over the weekend. However, due to freezing temperatures overnight a lot of ice formed which made both sites very hazardous. We had not expected the extent of this problem. Site staff were present at both Starkholmes and Lumsdale from first thing in the morning clearing paths and putting down grit. At 7.45am we extensively re-assessed conditions on both sites and at that point we took the difficult decision that despite our best efforts the extent of ice meant that it would be unsafe to open school. We communicated the decision via our website and ‘In Touch’ systems as soon as the staff responsible for our communication systems arrived at school. We fully appreciate that this was after many students had started their journeys and that this caused some difficulties. Our procedures in such circumstances are that students on bus journeys should stay on the bus until it arrives in school, where they will be met, supervised and arrangements for returning home can be made (please see below as a reminder of school closure procedures). We are looking in to our procedures in light of Monday’s closure and we will make any amendments that we deem necessary after careful review. Whilst we always aim to make decisions around school closure as early as possible, the possibility remains that similar circumstances could lead to a late closure decision at some point in the future. We have had a number of conversations with parents/carers about how we might be able to improve our systems and procedures under similar circumstances and we welcome any further suggestions for improvements you may have.
Reminder: School Emergency Closure Procedure The steps we take if we are forced to close the school in an emergency, ie due to extreme weather conditions or equipment failures associated with the change in the weather are given below. We should stress at the outset that this is something we only do with great reluctance, but our overriding concern is the health and safety of our students and sometimes such action is unavoidable. Snow – During School Hours: If there is a heavy snowfall during the day while students are already in school, and it becomes clear that getting home at the normal time may be difficult or dangerous, we may decide to close early. If we do close, the following instructions are given to students before they are allowed to leave the premises: •
If students know for sure that they have a safe destination with someone to look after them (such as their own home or a relative, neighbour or friend’s home) and provided they are sure they can reach this destination, they may leave when asked to do so.
•
If students are uncertain whether there is someone at home, they need to check before departure and should telephone to make sure of their arrangements. The school will make its telephones available free of charge to those who do not have a mobile phone, but obviously this may delay departure as we only have three external lines. Students should only leave once they are certain of their arrangements.

Newsletter It would be helpful if you can discuss at home what you want your son/daughter to do in the event of school closing early so that they know of arrangements in advance. If students cannot make arrangements and are not sure what to do and where to go, they must remain in school in the care of the staff of the school until suitable arrangements have been made. A member of staff will always remain in school with students until everyone has been collected. If students are on the way into school when the decision is made they should continue to come to school where staff will supervise until contact can be made with home. No student will be asked to leave site without a safe destination to go to. Snow – Overnight: In the event of heavy snow overnight we would ask parents/carers to use their discretion in deciding if it is safe for their child to set off for school. Emergency closures happen perhaps once or twice a year. The school will inform you of closure as soon as the decision is made to close the school, by various means: the school website; BBC Radio Derby or Peak FM and by text and/or email. Once students have been sent home, students and parents/carers should listen to local radio or check our website for further instructions about our plans for the following day. This information is usually posted on the school website by 7.30am each morning. Breakdown of Equipment: If, as happens very occasionally, we suffer a complete breakdown of equipment, depriving the school of its basic services, such as electricity or water, we may be forced to send students home for their own safety. The same procedure will be followed as for a snow closure.

School News Easter Concert Mr Rowley
The Music department hosted its annual Easter Concert on 20 March 2018. The event presented the enormous breadth of musical talent at the school and was a true showcase of Highfields students’ dedication and commitment to extracurricular music. The show was kicked off with Mrs Morris and the Senior and Junior choirs who came together to perform Coldplay’s ‘Viva la Vida’ and the Take That hit ’Rule the World’. Soloists followed including an exceptional piano performance by Ella in Year 12, vocal performances by Year 13 ‘leavers’ Megan and Anna and Charlotte who demonstrated a virtuosic violin performance of Kreisler’s challenging piece, ‘Tambourin Chinois’. Highfields’ guitar ensemble, led by Mrs Suett made their performance debut and there were student-led ensembles - ‘Ella’s Fellas’ presenting a fine cover of the Gnarls Barkley hit song ‘Crazy’, with Emily in Year 12 fronting the ensemble on vocals. The first half concluded with Dan in Year 8 wowing the crowd with probably one of the most measured and mature performances Highfields has ever seen. His rendition of ‘The Acrobat’ brought the house down and it is exciting to see and hear this new generation of music makers coming through the school. The second half was equally as impressive with stellar solo performances from Daisy in Year 10, and Lily and Beth in Year 13 who were both making their final appearance at a Highfields concert. The Senior Wind Band kicked things off though with the Beatles classic ‘Ticket to Ride’, Mr Stacey remaining on stage to lead Highfields Clarinet group. Mrs Basford led the String group through a performance of ‘Teddy Bear’s Picnic’ and the Junior choir returned with electrifying performances of ‘Hallelujah’, featuring solos from Amber and Charlotte in Year 8, and a Jackson 5 mashup of ‘I Want You Back’ and ‘ABC’. The penultimate act was courtesy of Mitch in Year 13 and his group ‘Dominant Preparation’ who performed a cover of Jazz standards ‘Cantaloupe’ and ‘Work Song’ - another student-led ensemble demonstrating musical maturity beyond their years! The evening concluded with the Mixed Staff Student Choir and a medley of songs from the hit musical Les Misérables, led by Annette Wood, reducing some members of the audience to tears. The evening had a genuine buzz about it with staff and audience members alike commenting on the outstanding performances and excellent musicianship.

Newsletter A parental email sent to the department read: “…an awe inspiring evening of musical talent that was enjoyable in every way. Despite the fact that it has left me feeling distinctly talentless, I was blown away by the talent of all the young people who took part”. Thanks to all of our wonderful students and parents/carers who supported the event - we hope to see you at our Summer production of ‘Footloose’. From all of us in the Music department - have a lovely Easter and enjoy the holidays!

Newsletter Sixth Form’s Little Snore Mrs Cruise
Sixth Form students slept rough on Friday 16 March to raise money for Framework, a homeless charity. Beginning with an idea from a couple of students in Year 12 to raise money for homeless people, a small group met up to discuss what they wanted to do. Last Friday it all came together and they were an absolute credit to their school community. The students gathered in the Sixth Form canteen after school and helped one of our parents to assemble 60 food parcels to be given out at a soup kitchen in Derby. Then it was time to board the train and walk across Derby to a Night Shelter in Normanton. The manager showed them around and described the work of the volunteers who help once a fortnight to provide a hot meal and a safe place for people to sleep through the winter months. We were able to give the shelter £110 the students had raised through the quiz night at Designate on 7 March. After a quick march back to the train station it was time to grab a bite to eat and then build a mini cardboard city on the outside corridor at Lumsdale. By this time the temperature was dropping so we all climbed into sleeping bags and played a few games to keep up our spirits. As midnight approached the snow had started falling but thankfully Mrs Bonner arrived with extra blankets and hot chocolate. Eventually people managed to drop off to sleep in spite of the wind whistling around and the snow blowing in, we were very relieved to be woken up at 7am by Riber Security announcing it was -2ºC and suggesting it was time to get home. Everyone felt very lucky to have somewhere to go to and humbled by a small taste of how tough life on the streets can be.

Sports Leaders News Active Health Project Friday 16 March saw GB tennis player, Jade Windley, visit Highfields for the Year 7 and 9 Active Health Project. The Year 9 students George, Oliver Reuben, Grace, Evie, Holly and Hettie received training as Active Health Mentors for the project. PE Apprentice, Miss Elliott, has been leading on the Year 7 project, running practical sessions on a Tuesday lunchtime for the group.
Loughborough University Visit On Tuesday 20 March Mrs Allen and PE Apprentice, Miss Elliott, attend Loughborough University with our Year 8 and 9 Active Girls mentors. All Saints Junior School are working with us on this project and we were joined in Loughborough by six of their Year 6 girls and teacher, Mrs Sargeant.

Newsletter 2018 Sports Leaders Awards Evening Thank you to students, parents/carers, guests and staff to for attending another successful Sports Leaders Awards Evening on 22 March with guest of honour England Cricketer, Lydia Greenway – photographs and a report on the evening will appear in the next Newsletter.
Primary School SEN Boccia On Friday 23 March the Primary Schools SEN Boccia took place - photographs and news will be reported after the holiday.
Voice of Sport The March Voice of Sport meeting went ahead at lunchtime looking at the Summer term events.
PE Apprentice Update PE Apprentices Miss Spencer and Miss Tabbenor delivered high class workshops to primary students on the School Games crews and Mr Molyneux continues to run the Primary Sports Evenings alongside our Sports Leaders from Year 9. On Wednesday 21 March PE Apprentice, Miss Tabbenor successfully completed her Health and Fitness qualification by leading two fitness sessions for Year 9 girls in PE, following the theory element she passed in Stevenage in January.

Solution: From the second row we see that c, d, e are 1, 2, 4 in some order; and from the third column we see that e> 2. Hence e=4 and we may now deduce that g=8 and so f=5. (although their values are not required, it is now also possible to deduce that c=1, a=3, b=9, d=2)

Year 6 School Visits to Highfields 2018

All students will have lunch on these visits and need to bring ÂŁ3. Students should be dropped off and picked up from our lower school site as they will not be able to catch a school bus on this visit. The second visit is Wednesday 4 July. Students will be required to have eaten lunch on 4 July before arriving at Highfields at 1pm. The school buses can be used on this day, if this is appropriate and students will be required to bring money to cover the bus fare. We recommend that parents/carers contact School Transport at Derbyshire County Council to obtain correct information about the bus (students must know the number of the bus they are wishing to board, the time and location of departure and the stop they are expected to get off at). Having welcomed your children, we would very much like to welcome you alongside them on the evening of Thursday 5 July at 6.30pm. Further information about the format of this evening will be given to your child during their visit on 4 July, however, if your child is unable to attend during the day please still come along to Lower Site at 7.30pm on 5 July. If you have any queries about Year 6 visits, please contact Mrs Green, Pastoral Manager Year 7 on tgreen@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk. All information regarding Year 6 visits will be available on our website and given to our feeder schools.

Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor)
The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year. We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.
Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher)
If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department. Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.
