Newsletter Message from the headteacher On Wednesday lunchtime I was walking with a group of lads up the stairs at Starkholmes when we were stopped by some Y8 prefects. The boys I was with calmly explained that they were on the way to the library and were allowed through by the officials. I got slightly flustered under pressure, as I have done in airport security from time to time, and couldn’t quite remember what I was doing upstairs during lunchtime. For an awful moment as I searched for something to say I thought they were going to frisk me but luckily, they were very understanding and waved me through with a smile. I really love it when students take a role in supporting a happy and inclusive ethos around the school and we are looking to develop this further next year. As usual I have been in and out of lessons on both sites. I happened across some A level physicians who, in near darkness, were mapping the angles of refraction as light travelled through a prism. A very patient student explained why this activity was useful saying, ‘it’s not really about the light, it’s about understanding the behaviour of waves’. As physicists from my last school will tell you, I am attracted to A level physics lessons like a moth to the flame. I love the challenge of trying to grasp concepts which are so fabulously complex and esoteric but usually end up with my limited intellect being stretched towards its fairly meagre limits. My son, Oscar, who is in Y8 at another school made me promise earlier this week to draw parents’/ carers’ attention to the MOMO threat currently being posed on social media (we have previously retweeted some information around this). However, on the way home this evening (Thursday) I heard an item on Radio 4’s Today programme which suggested that the whole thing had absolutely no basis in fact and that parents had actually done more harm than good by sharing the MOMO ‘myth’ with their children. What I think is always true is that we need to keep a close eye on our children with regards to their online activities and that we should listen out for any mention from them of this phenomenon.

Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Year 11 study skills and revision evening for parents/carers We know that as parents/carers you will join us in wanting the very best outcomes for your son/daughter this summer and to help you help them we have arranged a Year 11 revision evening on 7 March 2019 in the Wheeldon Hall from 6-8pm. The evening is designed for parents/carers. We will provide information on the best ways to study and how you can help your son/daughter plan their approach to their final exams. There will be examples of techniques and tips from staff and previous year 11 students, with handouts from the evening and a Revision Guide to help over the coming weeks. If you haven’t already confirmed your attendance and number of seats required, please contact Mr Tidmarsh either by telephone (extension 364) or email (dtidmarsh@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk) We look forward to welcoming you next week. Year 10 parent consultation evening – 12 March at Lumsdale Parents/carers of year 10 students are invited to attend the year 10 parents evening that will be held on Tuesday 12 March from 4-7pm in the sports hall at Lumsdale. Students will be given appointment cards next week to start to make appointments between 4pm and 6.45pm.

Newsletter Year 11 Prom – 21 June 2019 The Year 11 Prom will take place on Friday 21 June 2019 at Alfreton Hall in Alfreton, to celebrate the hard work and effort shown by our students during their time at Highfields. The ticket price of £35 includes a welcome drink, meal, disco and fireworks at the venue and transport to and from the venue (all students must travel to and from the venue on the coaches provided). Payment must be made in full by Friday 3 May 2019 to enable us to finalise arrangements with the venue. A photographer will be present during the evening and your child will be able to purchase full colour prints, presented in a card mount, on the night. Soft drinks may also be purchased at the venue, so please ensure your child takes enough money to cover these extras. Please note that there will be a strict no alcohol policy for students at this event. This event is a celebration of the hard work and effort shown by our students and is open to students who have consistently upheld the school code of conduct and shown determination and commitment in their studies. A letter will be issued shortly with a reply slip to return giving consent for your child to attend. This is a legal requirement and we are unable to take your child to the event without this form. Newsletter School News Davos ski trip Mrs Turner
We have just returned from a fantastic and successful ski trip in Davos, Switzerland. We had "wall to wall" sunshine with amazing snow conditions for the first five days, with unusually high temperatures. There was no need for hand warmers this year! The last day was a challenge, skiing in "white-out " conditions. The students were exhausted each day having experienced a full day’s skiing. It was amazing seeing the progress of all the students regardless of ability. This was due to the superb tuition given by Ski Gower. In the evening after a sumptuous meal the evening entertainments began - quiz night, bowling, swimming and we had the opportunity to see the Davos Ice hockey team in action against Bern. We will be hopefully returning to Davos next year so watch this space!

Newsletter Mini Musical Miss Bonsall
This January saw our 3rd annual event of the Evening of Theatre. This event gives students something to work towards as they dedicate themselves to extra-curricular clubs each week. It has also offered our younger students (years 7 & 8) the opportunity to build their confidence, perform with friends and get involved in a whole school event. So, another mini musical was created; an abridged and adapted version of Disney's 'The Lion King'. The incredibly strong cast was made up of 40 year 7 & 8 students. Abigail, a year 7 student, shone as Simba with her strong vocal performance and superb characterisation. Starring alongside her as Nala was year 7 student Evie - creatively mischievous and scary, using detailed facial expressions perfectly. Other stand out principal roles included Mufasa (year 7 Sam), Rafiki (year 7 Imogen) and Scar (year 8 Lydia). Another special mention should go to the incredibly funny Timon played by the very talented Molly, Jessica as Pumba who also gave a confident, comedic performance and Tilda as the king’s major domo, Zazu. As well as the mini musical, the Evening of Theatre provided the opportunity to enjoy the work of another 100 students from upper school musical theatre club, lower school drama club and A level and GCSE exam pieces. Stand out performances included year 13 student Charlie, who sang 'Waving Through a Window' and the cast of upper school musical theatre club who showcased a knockout performance of 'You Will Be Found'; both songs from the new BIG musical 'Dear Evan Hansen'. Year 10's showcased some exceptional work they have developed in lessons based on the stimulus Gangs, whilst A Level Drama students performed scripts from A Mid-Summer Nights Dream and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time in the style of Physical Theatre. Head of Drama and Dance, Emily Bonsall, said "Our Evening of Theatre created a real buzz around the school and I was so impressed with the talent and commitment displayed by our students. It was great to build on the wonderful work of previous performances including our summer 2018 production of Footloose. I hope to see all of these students performing again in our 2019 school production in a few months’ time!" Up next: 10 – 13 July 2019 - LEGALLY BLONDE

Newsletter London Drama trip for Highfields sixth form students Miss Bonsall Highfields students were lucky enough to experience an inspiring and engaging trip to London on 31 January. 16 year 12 and 13 Drama students took the train to London with their teachers to experience Live Theatre as part of their written exam. A Level students are expected to analyse and evaluate the performances of actors in a live piece of Theatre. When ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time’ was reported to return to the West-End for a limited period I had to get tickets for our students again. It is not only an exceptional, unforgettable piece of theatre; but also a brilliant piece to write about. The students thoroughly enjoyed the performance and have already started working on their essays for the written exam. They have analysed moments they enjoyed and evaluated the audience response, too. The students also had a short walking tour of favourite London landmarks (only with me as a tour guide!) - we visited Buckingham Palace, Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus and Covent Garden. Finally, we were lucky enough to be met after the performance by actor Sean Mackenzie. Sean is an experienced actor currently in the ensemble of ‘Curious Incident’. Some of us were fortunate to see him perform at Derby Theatre last year and since then he’s been a ‘friend’ on Twitter. When he saw our @HighfieldsDrama tweet that we were on our way to see the show, he got in touch to arrange a quick meet and greet. Sean was keen to see us as he’s from Derbyshire himself! He was informative and inspiring, and hopefully we will see him again!

Newsletter The Red Box Project The Red Box Project is a community-based, not-for-profit initiative, which aims to support young people throughout their periods by providing red boxes filled with free period products to local schools. The Red Box Project was founded in March 2017 by three friends who wanted to give young people in their local area access to sanitary products. After reading about ‘Period Poverty‘ in the news, they were angered at the idea that young women were missing out on their education because they couldn’t afford the products they needed during their period. They decided to take action and contacted several secondary schools in Portsmouth to ask if a constantly stocked box of menstrual product would be welcomed. The feedback from teachers was that the issue was real and the resource was needed. Recognising that the need was nationwide, they invited individuals from across the country to be a part of this movement and the response was overwhelming. From Scotland to Cornwall as well as overseas, people began to group together, set up Red Boxes filled with tampons, pads, tights and underwear which were then delivered in to local schools. They fundraised, collected, had craft sales and donations drives, all to make sure their boxes never became empty. Highfields School are pleased to be a part of this excellent initiative to ensure no girl misses school because of their periods. Intermediate Maths Challenge success Mrs Brown On 7 February 2019, 29 of the best mathematicians in years 10 and 11 took part in the Intermediate Maths Challenge, a nationwide competition organised by UKMT. The paper consists of 25 questions similar to these: The diagram shows a square of perimeter 20cm inscribed inside a square of perimeter 28cm. What is the area of the shaded triangle? A: 6 cm2

E: 10 cm2
A particular integer is the smallest multiple of 72, each of whose digits is either 0 or 1. How many digits does this integer have? A: 4

The top 40% of participants are awarded Bronze, Silver or Gold certificates and 25 of our students received one of these, five students being awarded Gold which puts them in the top 7% of participants nationwide. Four of these (Eleanor, Luis, Henry and Oliver) have made it through to the next level of the competition, the “kangaroo” which is taken by students internationally – well done to all!

The Big Book Sale – Lumsdale Mrs Walker The Library at Lumsdale (upper school site) is having a sale of second-hand non-fiction books. We have a wide range of books on offer covering everything from Picasso to Cookery, to Teach yourself Guitar and A History of Volcano’s! The sale will take place in the Lumsdale Library and the coffee bar at Break and Lunchtime. All books will be competitively priced at 20p each.

Newsletter Sports Leaders News Sports leaders training with England netball coach On Friday 15 February, England netball coach, Val Kindred, was in school training our sports leaders and staff from Wessington and Winster Primary Schools on the game of High 5 netball. The leaders are now trained to officiate at the High 5 netball tournament for key stage 2 students to be held on Friday 8 March at Highfields.
Primary Sports evenings The Spring block of four primary sports evenings started on Wednesday 27 February with Elton and South Darley Primary Schools taking part. These sessions are ably led by our year 9 sports leaders as a part of their ‘Go Lead’ qualification and supported by the PE apprentices.
Voice of Sport The Voice of Sport group met on Friday 1 March.
Highfields Cluster Sports programme On Friday 1 March Mrs Allen attended the primary school Heads Cluster meeting to discuss plans for 2019/2020 for the Highfields cluster sports programme.
PE apprentice update PE apprentice, Mr Molyneux, led assemblies at Elton and Winster Primary Schools on Tuesday 26 February. Elton Primary is the placement school for Mr Molyneux for two days a week, a part of his level 5 APFE/Sports leaders UK qualification.
Youth Sport Trust update Mrs Allen attended the Youth Sport Trust annual conference at the Ricoh Stadium in Coventry on Wednesday and Thursday 27 and 28 February 2019. This year’s theme is ‘transforming education through sport’.

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.

Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.
