Sad deaths of inspirational teachers Inspirational teachers are at the heart of a great education. Most of us remember a teacher who made a difference, perhaps through their passion for a subject or possibly by showing that they really believed in us. There have been many such teachers at Highfields School over the years, and many students have benefitted from their commitment, diligence and flair. Two superb examples are former Head of Sociology, Dave Stoker, and former Head of Modern Foreign Languages, Richard Bannister. Dave Stoker died after a short illness at Christmas and Richard Bannister passed away peacefully at home on 30 January. For almost three years Richard had been living with motor neurone disease which he had endured with an overwhelmingly positive spirit and good humour. Both men were at Highfields from its foundation under comprehensive reorganisation in 1982, and both continued to make their mark until retirement some 3 decades later. Dave had originally trained to teach PE, but took many roles at Highfields including being a Senior Tutor and work experience co-ordinator before leading the Sociology department, and establishing the hugely popular and successful A level Psychology course. Dave continued to be deeply involved in sports coaching but was above all an outstanding classroom teacher who brought the very best out of his students. Current Head of Sociology, Amanda Serjeant, remembers that ‘he often used his own experience as a pupil to raise aspirations. Dave was the kind of coach that made students believe they could be successful even if it didn’t come at the first attempt. If all else failed, he used his extensive stock of bad jokes until even the most hardened cracked a smile’. One of Dave’s former line managers, Rose Waterfall, summed up Dave’s contribution in the classroom by noting that ‘his lessons were never dull and regardless of their ability he made Sociology accessible to all his students. His students achieved outstanding successes and this was largely due to his meticulous preparation and energy’. Richard also made a tremendous contribution to the life of Highfields School. Not only did he take countless teenagers over the years on language trips to Spain and France, he also participated in ski trips, ran a football team for sixth form and was an invaluable member of staff. He will be remembered by many as an inspirational teacher and as a kind colleague with a huge sense of fun and integrity. He took the role of mentoring new teachers seriously and passed on wisdom to many teachers working around the country. Richard's successor as Head of Modern Foreign Languages, Maria Bowen, said, "I feel privileged to have worked with Richard for over fifteen years. Wise, kind and patient, he was a lasting inspiration to all of us in our department. His sense of fun and passion for languages meant coming to work was a pleasure. Whether teaching Spanish verbs or the intricacies of French adjective endings, he communicated an infectious enthusiasm for learning and had an unparalleled rapport with students. As a colleague he was supportive, loyal and inspirational." We will miss both men but they will help us to remember how important enthusiasm, passion, care and commitment are in all that we do in school. We would like to say a huge thank you to parents/carers for supporting the school to partially close on Friday 16 March to enable colleagues to attend Richard Bannister’s funeral.

Parent/Carer Notices Highfields School Headteacher for September 2018 On behalf of Highfields School Governing Board we would like to let you know the outcome of the recruitment and appointment process for our new Headteacher. Following a rigorous process, an Extraordinary Meeting of Full Governors last night ratified the decision of the appointment panel to offer the post to Andrew Marsh. He has accepted our offer and, subject to the normal checks, will take up the post from 1 September 2018. Andrew is currently a member of the Senior Leadership Team at Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School and comes with a wide range of leadership and teaching experience from a great diversity of schools. We are sure that everyone in the school community will welcome Andrew and offer him their full support in taking the school forward to an even brighter future. Andrew is likely to be seen in the school over the next few months to get to know us better and work with the Senior Leadership Team so that he is up and running in September. A large number of staff and students were involved in the process through stakeholder groups or meeting the candidates over lunch last Tuesday. Their enthusiastic engagement gave all candidates a positive impression of the school, all of whom recognised the friendly, inclusive community which we are. Newsletter Friday 23 March Starkholmes support for charities Epilepsy Awareness ‘Purple Day’ takes place on Monday 26 March and students at Lower School Site are raising awareness of epilepsy by wearing non-uniform with a purple theme on Friday 23 March, £1 donations will go to support the National Epilepsy Association. During Year 7 and 8 PE lessons we will be stepping and skipping in aid of Sport Relief and the British Heart Foundation. We will add each student’s steps/distance together and attempt to achieve the distance from Highfields to London. Any donations or sponsorship should be handed in to the PE department during the lesson or to reception.
Year 10 Health Day at Lumsdale Year 10 students will need to wear their Highfields PE kit as they are taking part in Health Day with outside providers coming in to school to run various workshops. Students in Years 9 and 11 should wear school uniform as normal.
HPV Immunisations – Year 8 & Year 9 Girls only The Immunisation Team have confirmed they will be offering vaccinations to all Year 8 and Year 9 girls on Thursday 14 June 2018 for the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). The HPV vaccine protects against cervical cancer and to get the best protection it is important that girls receive two injections. The first injection will be for Year 8 girls and girls in Year 9 will receive their second injection (injections are usually offered 12 to 24 months after the first). Letters have been issued to Year 8 students along with a consent form to be returned by Friday 13 April 2018 in order to allow the Immunisation Team to order sufficient vaccinations. Year 9 girls will receive their second dose if they were seen last year and have already signed a consent form. Any Year 9 girl who missed their vaccination last year can also be seen on the day. Information on the vaccine can be accessed via the NHS website (http://www.nhs.uk/hpv) describing the disease and benefits of the vaccination. However, if you have any questions or would like further information, the Immunisation Nursing Team (based at Repton) can be contacted on 01283 707170 (select option 3 – immunisations).

School News Davos Ski Trip Mrs Turner
We had a superb and successful week skiing in the exclusive resorts of Davos and Klosters, experiencing amazing snow conditions. Although the weather on the first day certainly put our students to the test, with white-out conditions and temperatures of minus 16ºC, it soon improved. For the rest of the week we had days of perfect visibility and sunshine, although the temperature still remained well below freezing. The students had six full days of skiing tuition followed by an action-packed evening entertainments programme. Our British ski instructors were really impressed with the progress our students made and, by the end of the week, even the beginners group made the long descent to the Royals’ resort of Klosters. We are planning to return to Davos next February half term and letters will soon be available with further information.

Newsletter Highfields STEM Activities 2017-18 This has been a busy year for Highfields students and Head of Science Charlotte Morgan, who has been leading a number of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) initiatives. September saw the launch of the Leadership Skills Award with 65 students from Years 11 and 12. The course included reflection on leadership skills before students went out to lead activities within the Highfields School Community and beyond. Many have taken part in Primary liaison work with two of our feeder schools, All Saints Juniors Matlock and Darley Dale Churchtown. Together with All Saints Junior School, Highfields has been part of The Polar Explorer Programme which is created for primary schools who are keen to raise aspirations and attainment in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in their school. The Polar Explorer Programme aims to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. Year 12 students at the Whole Day Arctic
As part of this programme Mrs Morgan Science Exploration at All Saints Juniors delivered a CPD session on Working Scientifically within the Science Curriculum to All Saints Junior School staff. This was followed up with a whole day Arctic Science Exploration in January for 60 Year 6 students, culminating in an afternoon of science investigations led by 14 of the Year 12 Leadership Skills Award students. At the moment Mrs Morgan, accompanied by Year 12, is leading a STEM club after school at All Saints Junior School investigating Boat Building which will run for five weeks.

As part of Science week celebrations Darley Dale Churchtown invited Mrs Morgan to lead an assembly. There were lots of demonstrations of defying gravity and bubbles. The finale was the complete encasing of a student in a bubble. Mrs Morgan left her special bubble mixture and accessories for the Darley Dale students to continue their investigations at break and lunchtime. The following day Highfields School hosted a Darley Dale Primary visit of Year 5 and Year 6 students. They worked with a group of Year 11 Leadership Skills Award students to find out how much air is inside a Wispa chocolate bar. The highlight of this was being able to use the Bunsen Burners to safely melt the chocolate to remove the air bubbles.
Mrs Morgan and the Leadership Skills Award Students are thoroughly enjoying meeting and working with all the students at the Primary Schools and looking forward to continuing to build links in the future.

Newsletter Year 11 Workshops with Ideas 4 Careers Some of our Year 11 students were given a fantastic opportunity to take part in two Employer Interaction workshops recently: "What`s My Line?" involved a speed networking activity with Business Ambassadors and real Apprentices. This broadened the students’ horizons by giving them a feel for a typical day in the life of different working people. The students had to develop their communication skills as they had to interview the Business Ambassadors. "Know your Potential Employer� and "How to get on at work" involved activities looking at generic employability skills needed by most employers. The sessions focused on work values and attitudes to enable our students to secure and sustain meaningful employment. Sincere thanks to the Business Ambassadors and Apprentices for providing such valuable experiences for our students.

Sports Leaders News High 5 Netball On Friday 16 February England Netball Coach, Val Kindred, came to Highfields to deliver High 5 Netball training for the Highfields Leaders and primary school staff. This was an excellent session and the teams were all trained to officiate at the High 5 Tournament on 15 March.
Youth Sport Trust Quality Mark On Monday 19 February we received some fantastic news that Highfields School have retained our Gold mark status with Youth Sport Trust, following the two YST Quality Mark visits (see page 15 for full article). Our areas of strength are: 
Student voice - there is a clear infrastructure in place to allow students to voice their opinions and make a positive contribution to the PE, sport and physical activity agenda within the school. This is evident in the flexibility shown in PE lessons, with alternative sports offered and pupils given the choice in the activity they choose.

Leadership - this is clearly a defining element of the school, with a great volume and quality of experiences for the pupils to engage with. Leadership is also positively utilised in PE lessons, with pupils encouraged to take on coaching/peer mentor roles to support their own understanding and develop their peers understanding and delivery to raise achievement.

Diversity of sporting activities e.g. wrestling, orienteering, with good NGB connections to support CPD opportunities and bespoke opportunities. The PE team are versatile and creative in their approach to curriculum and extra-curricular activities, particularly in considering the restrictions with facilities. In terms of the active agenda, ideas currently under consideration such as a tough mudder approach to National School Sport Week, offer a different approach and something to appeal to the wider student population.

Newsletter PE Apprentice Update On Tuesday 26 February PE Apprentice, Miss Elliott, led a Young Ambassadors Assembly for All Saints Infants. PE Apprentices Miss Tabbenor and Miss Spencer ably led workshops at the SSP Conference on Friday 16 March.
Primary Sports Evenings The Spring block of primary sports meetings started on Wednesday 27 February with South Darley and Elton schools in attendance. South Darley and Elton Primaries enjoyed their evening on Wednesday 14 March.
Validation Visit On Tuesday 6 March Mrs Allen undertook a validation visit to Science for the Leadership Award. She saw excellent leadership by Year 11 to students from Darley Churchtown primary school who were taking part in experiments, as outlined in Mrs Morgan’s article.
School Sports Partnership Pentathlon On Wednesday 7 March the SSP Year 5 and 6 Pentathlon Championships were held at Highfields and officiated by our Sports Leaders.

Newsletter High 5 Netball The Key Stage 2 High 5 Netball took place on Thursday 15 March – seven teams took part and our Sports Leaders were brilliant in their role as officials. The winners were Lea Primary, with Castle View Primary in Second place, Darley Dale Primary coming third, St Giles fourth, All Saints teams in fifth and sixth position and Winster Primary seventh. Lea Primary go onto represent us at the SSP finals to be held at Lady Manners School next week.

Newsletter Highfields School Achieves Youth Sport Trust Gold Quality Mark Highfields School has been awarded the Youth Sport Trust Gold Quality Mark for its commitment to physical education (PE) and school sport at its school. The Youth Sport Trust is a national charity that builds a brighter future for young people through the power of sport. The Quality Mark is an online self-review tool which provides schools with a nationally recognised badge of excellence for the quality of its PE and school sport. The tool supports schools to audit their PE provision and identify priorities for its development. Ben Riggott, Co-Headteacher said “we are absolutely thrilled to have been awarded the Gold Quality Mark from the Youth Sport Trust, which recognises our commitment to delivering the best possible sporting experiences for the young people at our school and in the wider community. There are a whole range of educational, health and wellbeing benefits from delivering high quality PE and school sport, and we see on a regular basis that when it is delivered well it can transform lives.” Highfields School has been engaged in numerous Youth Sport Trust projects - Derbyshire Combat Hub, Derbyshire Health and Wellbeing Hub, Girls Active, This Girl Can projects, Women in Sport, Active in Health Project (Year 7) and Beyond the Baseline Project (Key Stage 3). The school’s Sports Leadership Academy holds a Queen’s Award for volunteering, has nine members in the Derbyshire Leadership, Coaching and Volunteering Academy. Highfields is trialling the Youth Sport Award in Key Stages 4 and 5, links with the primary cluster team and provides a quality programme for the cluster, engaging in some 21 competitions and festivals during the year. The School runs the Sports Leaders UK awards and qualifications for Years 6 to 13 as well as running the Living For Sport programme, inclusive sport and has five PE and School Sport Apprentices engaged in level 2/3 qualifications. Highfields has many links with NGB for coaching awards and has this academic year been trained by the National Governing Bodies for primary staff and sports leaders in Sports Hall Athletics (England Athletics), High 5 netball (England Netball), Tag Rugby (England Rugby) with further training planned for Kwik Cricket (Derbyshire Coaches) and Rounders (England Rounders). Highfields has run intra-school competitions in table tennis, mixed football and netball with basketball and dodgeball the next sports. The school takes part in many inter-school matches and festivals and the school’s Orienteering Team finished 10th at this year’s Nationals in Sheffield the culmination of a three-year link with British orienteering leading up to our entrance at this national event. Schools are awarded Bronze, Silver and Gold status, which reflects their efforts in using PE and school sport to raise achievement across the school. When a school is awarded the Gold Quality Mark, the Youth Sport Trust visit the school and validate its self-review. Alison Oliver, Chief Executive at the Youth Sport Trust, said “Congratulations to Highfields School for achieving the Youth Sport Trust Gold Quality Mark. Last week’s maths quiz answer … Four cards each have a number written on one side and a phrase written on the other. The four numbers are 2, 5, 7 and 12. The four phrases are "Divisible by 7", "Odd", "Prime" and "Greater than 100". On each card, the number written does not have the property written on the other side of the card. What are the four number-property pairs?
Solution: The number 7 is odd, prime and divisible by 7. This means that the only property that it can have written on its back is "Greater than 100". 7 is certainly smaller than 100 The numbers 2, 5 and 7 are all prime, so the only number that can have "Prime" written on its back is 12. 12 is even, so has a factor of 2 and is not prime. The number 5 is odd, so the only remaining property that can be written on its back is "Divisible by 7". 5 is certainly not divisible by 7. This just leaves 2 with the property "Odd". Since 2 is even, this is acceptable.

Year 6 School Visits to Highfields 2018

All students will have lunch on these visits and need to bring ÂŁ3. Students should be dropped off and picked up from our lower school site as they will not be able to catch a school bus on this visit. The second visit is Wednesday 4 July. Students will be required to have eaten lunch on 4 July before arriving at Highfields at 1pm. The school buses can be used on this day, if this is appropriate and students will be required to bring money to cover the bus fare. We recommend that parents/carers contact School Transport at Derbyshire County Council to obtain correct information about the bus (students must know the number of the bus they are wishing to board, the time and location of departure and the stop they are expected to get off at). Having welcomed your children, we would very much like to welcome you alongside them on the evening of Thursday 5 July at 6.30pm. Further information about the format of this evening will be given to your child during their visit on 4 July, however, if your child is unable to attend during the day please still come along to Lower Site at 7.30pm on 5 July. If you have any queries about Year 6 visits, please contact Mrs Green, Pastoral Manager Year 7 on tgreen@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk. All information regarding Year 6 visits will be available on our website and given to our feeder schools.

Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor)
The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year. We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.
Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher)
If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department. Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.
