Newsletter Message from the headteacher I visited around 27 lessons this week. The number is so high because we had an unusually high number of staff absent. Highfields staff are notoriously resilient, so this is quite an unusual state of affairs. Some classes were covered by a supply teacher and in these cases we are always keen to ensure that students are settling and learning properly. On Tuesday morning it took a few minutes longer than normal to get a cover teacher to one of our classrooms. The delay was compounded because a) the class sent down a fully completed register which we assumed was from a teacher and b) something unusual happened. Instead of letting us know that the cover teacher had yet to appear, the year 11 class decided to absorb the cover work and teach themselves. Dan took the helm, wrote the learning objectives on the board and off they went. By the time a teacher arrived they were already caught up in quite an intense discussion about An Inspector Calls, their GCSE set work. The teacher, one of our strongest practitioners, decided not to interrupt their flow and sat quietly at the back of the room to observe. When the teacher came to see me to report what had happened, she told me that the lesson reached its zenith when Dan appeared to start using the advanced ‘Lemov’ questioning techniques that staff have been training in this year. Obviously, we have sorted the glitch that resulted in the delay of cover for this class. But I have to admit that I feel very chippy about the fact that a potential problem was translated into an opportunity by these self-motivated year 11 students: ‘self-regulation’ at its most potent. Elsewhere in the school the A level drama was cutting, stark, compelling and Highfields’ Got Talent was funny, touching, vibrant. Oh yes, and thank you to Emma in year 9 whose halloumi fries are even nicer than they look in the image below: I know I shouldn’t have taken so many, but they were delicious. We wish the skiers bon voyage and we hope that you have a happy and peaceful half term.

Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Climate change protest Thanks to any parents/carers whose approach to the climate change initiative today has been supportive and sensible. At school we have taken this as an opportunity to raise awareness and have asked students to sign up to our recycling rota and student parliament, for whom this is a focus. We cannot condone unarranged student absence as it compromises our ability to keep children safe. Any student absence or truancy will be dealt with in the usual way. We hope you have a peaceful and happy half term break.
Road safety We have received reports from members of the public recently alerting us to the fact that students are crossing the road without looking and on occasions walking in front of cars, particularly when disembarking the bus on Chesterfield Road. We are reminding students in assemblies of the dangers this presents and would appreciate it if parents/carers could reiterate the message and the importance of road safety awareness.
Polite request – dropping off and collecting students We would like to remind parents/carers that students should be dropped off and collected outside of the school site in the mornings and at the end of the school day. Parents/carers should not enter or park in the school car park allocated for staff and visitors or bus bays allocated for school transport. We are always keen to be good neighbours and to protect the safety of all pedestrians and road users. With this in mind please exercise care and consideration during busy times and take care not to block driveways or to use private car parks of local businesses. It has been reported to us that several parents/carers are using the Rees Partnership car park to drop students off for Lumsdale – this is a private car park and should not be used by the public.
Non-prescribed medication (paracetamol) update Following advice from Derbyshire County Council and discussion with the Governing Board, Highfields School will no longer hold a supply of paracetamol to be given to students to relieve pain after Easter. This applies to both school sites.

Newsletter Reminder: Year 8 parent consultation evening Parents/carers of year 8 students are invited to attend the year 8 parents evening that will be held on Tuesday 26 February from 4-7pm in the sports hall at the upper school site to discuss your child’s progress. Newsletter School News UK Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge Thomas from Highfields School was a finalist in the computational thinking challenge at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Oxford Talented student Thomas was invited to the Department of Computer Science at the University of Oxford on Saturday 2 February as a finalist in a UK-wide competition – The UK Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge. Reaching the final of the Elite age group is an impressive achievement, as 6,415 students entered the first round for the age group (16–18). Thomas was among the top 60 highest achieving students invited to the final round in his age group, and was presented with his finalist’s certificate at a prizegiving ceremony at Hertford College. The UK Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge, supported by Google, is designed to get students excited about computing and computational thinking. It is a problem-solving contest with questions inspired by topics in computer science. In the first round, held in their own schools, students have to try and solve as many problems as possible in the allotted time. There are six age categories. The highest scoring students from the four oldest age groups (Elite, Senior, Intermediate, and Junior) were then invited to the Department of Computer Science at Oxford for the finals over two weekends in February.

Newsletter Local author Hilary McKay wins Costa Book Award The Skylarks’ War, by local author Hilary McKay, is the winner of this year’s
prestigious Costa Children’s Book Award. The judges described it as “as perfect a novel as you could ever want to read.”
The Skylarks' War is a beautiful story following the loves and losses of a family growing up against the harsh backdrop of World War One.
Clarry and her older brother Peter live for their summers in Cornwall, staying with their grandparents and running free with their charismatic cousin, Rupert. But normal life resumes each September – boarding school for Peter and Rupert, and a boring life for Clarry at home with her absent father, as the shadow of a terrible war looms ever closer. When Rupert goes off to fight at the front, Clarry feels their skylark summers are finally slipping away from them. Can their family survive this fearful war? Hilary McKay has very kindly visited Highfields in the past to talk to year 7 and 8 book club members about their own writing. We are delighted that she has won this much-deserved award and wish her many congratulations. The publisher of “The Skylarks’ War” has very kindly sent us several copies of the book, which are available to borrow from libraries at both sites.
Year 9 PSHE careers lessons The year 9 students have been involved in a workshop on employability skills and the local labour market, to complement their careers and options programme. The workshop was delivered by the Work and Pensions School’s Advisor. The students were informed about the importance of "first impressions" and how to conduct themselves in an interview. The students then researched job roles in the local area to increase their understanding of why it is important to follow the ever changing job market. Learning Unlimited have also delivered a workshop on apprenticeships. An overview of apprenticeships was given along with how to apply for them with examples of good and bad application forms. The importance of gaining work experience was highlighted to the students. Newsletter Sports Leaders UK Level 2 Dance The Sports Leaders UK level 2 dance verification took place on Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 February. Our year 13 students Ben and Katy who are taking the level 2 Dance leader award have been fantastic in their commitment and dedication to the award. They lead sessions of dance on a Wednesday evening to our younger students and I was privileged to observe a session. It was so encouraging to see the skills they exhibited in leading this and the fine techniques in dance they are developing with the students. My thanks go to Mrs Hollinrake and Mrs Petch who are currently tutoring this course and to Mrs Wise who tutored the course last year.

PE Apprentice Update PE apprentice, Mr Edenbrow, taught a fitness session to year 10 on Wednesday 13 February. This is part of a 6 lesson observation experience which goes towards the level 3 qualification. The students worked extremely well in response to each of the fitness tests which Mr Edenbrow also joined in. PE apprentice, Mr Hill, taught a football session to year 10 on Thursday 14 February which also forms part of a 6 lesson observation experience working towards his level 3 qualification.

Fixtures notice board: Thursday 28 February - first team county cup football Year 11 and year 8 are playing at home against Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School on Thursday – 4pm kick off at Lumsdale. A mini bus for the year 8 students will collect from Starkholmes at 3.30pm to Lumsdale. Students to be collected from Lumsdale at the end of the game.

Our year 10s were invited to play in a year 10 & 11 rugby 7s tournament at Meadowhead School in Sheffield on Tuesday 12 February, so captain Cohen assembled eleven brave souls and off we went. On arrival we were informed that we would be playing one match of 11 a side against Meadowhead as no other schools had appeared. That was not a problem for our hardy bunch. After an early try from Meadowhead our lads soon settled in, putting in some excellent work before James snatched the ball and streaked away to score Highfields' first try which was converted by Freddy despite a strong wind. Meadowhead soon came back with a try and a successful conversion of their own. However, before the half time whistle went, our newest player Tyler demonstrated incredible speed and scored a try. All square at half time. In the second half there was some truly stunning tackling by the Highfields team but Meadowhead managed to get the ball over the line. Our lads heckles were raised and thanks to a determined effort by all, Tyler was again able to show the opposition a clean pair of heels. This time he remembered to put the ball down between the posts ensuring that Freddy was able to convert the try. By this time our lads were beginning to feel the effects of their heroic performance and with Tom on the side-lines due to injury, Meadowhead were able to score a try within the dying seconds of the game. Final score 22-19 to Meadowhead. Congratulations came from the Meadowhead coach who told our lads that they should hold their heads high having been beaten only narrowly by a team from the year above. I think we'd all second that. Coach George awarded man of the match to Tyler for his fearless tackles and great tries.
Football victory against Lady Manners Mr Shirtcliffe
On Wednesday 13 of February Highfields’s first team football team beat Lady Manners 1 - 0 in the second round of the County Cup. It was a very even team with both teams playing some good football as well as the long ball on occasion. Jack’s 11th minute strike was the difference between the sides. A special mention also goes to Harry, our stand in goalkeeper with some good saves and a clean sheet – well done all!

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiries (reception) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is reception. Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or pastoral manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year. Subject specific enquiry (subject teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher.
