Parent/Carer notices Reminder: Drama rehearsals during half term for Practical Exams Drama practical exam rehearsals are taking place during February half term with Miss Bonsall on Thursday 22 February to support them with their group performances:
A level students from 10am – 12noon GCSE students from 12noon – 3pm
We strongly encourage students to attend this rehearsal to access help, support and direction to help them achieve the best grades they can.

School News Anti-Bullying Work We have recently been working on an updated bullying policy in school. A group of Year 7 students helped us to write a student friendly version of the new policy which was shared with all students last Thursday. All students were asked to sign the policy and to commit to being an “upstander” by ensuring they report bullying or go to get help when any bullying is seen. They may have shared this with you or talked about the lesson at home. We have also talked to students about the difference between friendship fall outs and bullying and how it is important not to report a friendship fall out as bullying. Unkind words and actions between friends who fall out are difficult for young people but are very different to bullying. We will continue to support students with friendship fall outs, but want all students and parents to be aware that friends falling out is very different to bullying. Bullying is: “The repetitive, intentional hurting of one person or group by another person or group, where the relationship involves an imbalance of power. It can happen face to face or online” (Anti-bullying Alliance) We continue to take bullying very seriously. As you will see from the student friendly policy we are committed to tacking any bullying in school and will listen to parental concerns as part of this. In the first instance please contact your child’s pastoral manager or Head of Year if you have any concerns.
Online Safety We continue to work hard to support students to stay safe online. Thank you to those of you who completed the online survey which has helped us plan our next steps. Traci Goode delivered online safety training to our staff last academic year and more recently has delivered training to the local police and our feeder primary school staff. She has used student surveys and your parent surveys to design presentations for the students which have so far have been delivered to Years 9, 10, 11 and 12. She was due to present to Years 7 and 8 this week but due to the school closure we have had to postpone the sessions until after half term. Once all of the presentations have been delivered, our next step will be to train a group of Highfields students to go out to our feeder primary schools to teach younger students how to stay safe online before they join us at Highfields.

Newsletter French students visit Highfields Mrs Bowen
Highfields welcomed a group of 40 students and four staff from College Jean Moulin in Indre et Loire in central France. Contact between our two schools was established by Sophie Grindrod, a former Highfields student who is studying French and Economics. Sophie worked at the French school as part of her studies and persuaded them that a visit to the East Midlands would be educational and fun! The aim of the day at Lumsdale was to look at the industrial heritage in the area as well as to see an English school and exchange information. Mr Hoben took the group on a whistlestop tour of the Bailey Mills in the pouring rain. Mrs Bowen's Year 9 class then gave a presentation about what they felt might be of interest and topics ranged from well dressings to cable cars and the raft race. Every student in the class spoke in French about their chosen topic - Bravo! The French students then gave their presentation in English on their region and their school.
In an effort to stimulate conversation, Mrs Bowen and Mr Roberts organised a 'speed dating' activity where students exchanged information about themselves in the language they are studying. This was a great success and all students got involved and enjoyed the challenge. Mrs Bowen's Year 9 French class were gracious hosts, bringing in biscuits for the visitors and spending time with them at lunch - they were a credit to our school.

Newsletter Sheffield University Engineering Trip Mr Richardson
A selection of Highfields students studying Product Design or Engineering recently visited Sheffield University to explore the different options surrounding engineering. They discovered there was a lot more to engineering than meets the eye, as it is possible to choose a range of topics that all come under the umbrella of engineering, including aerospace, chemical, civil, mechanical and bio-medical engineering. After the main discussion (where students looked at friction and where it is needed) they had the opportunity to tour the workshops in the ‘diamond centre’ which is a new £80 million building for the students studying engineering. This building contained many workshops that were full of the newest equipment. It also contained a flight simulator room where students could learn to fly and test out different plane designs. Everyone found the day useful in helping to see how far they could go with their respective combination of Alevels and which part of engineering they have the biggest passion for.

Newsletter Derbyshire Schools’ Book Award Mrs Brown
Years 8, 9 and 10 book club students have taken part in the Derbyshire Schools’ Book Award, DSBA. Ten students who have read all six short-listed books attended a DSBA finale at Eckington School. The day started with an escape room activity where students worked out the escape code based on knowledge from the books on the DSBA shortlist. In the afternoon each school made a presentation on one of the books. Our students did us proud with their magnificent PowerPoint presentations. A good day was had by all. Students in schools all over Derbyshire have now voted for the winner of the DSBA, which is due to be announced shortly.

The Apprentices will now deliver workshops to both staff and students from primary schools in the School Sports Partnership on 16 March.

Newsletter Table Tennis Competition The conclusion of a fantastic intra Year 9 and 10 table tennis competition run by PE Apprentice Mr Molyneux took place on Friday. The Bronze medal match was won by Declan (Year 10) beating Luke (Year 9), the silver medal was won by Jack (Year 10) and our Gold medal winner was Daniel (Year 10) – well done to all who took part.
The intra-Year 9 football was on hold this week due to the Ski tri meeting to Davos but was used wisely as a practice week for students.
Change 4 Life Event On Tuesday 13 February PE Apprentice, Miss Tabbenor, delivered workshops at the primary school Change 4 Life event at the Arc.
Quality Assurance Visit The Youth Sport Trust representatives visited Highfields on Wednesday 14 February for our two-day quality assurance visit.
Voice of Sport On Friday 16 February the Voice of Sport group met for their February meeting.
England Netball Coach The England Netball coach, Val Kindred, came to Highfields to train primary staff and our Year 9 and 10 Sports Leaders. They will now go onto deliver the Key Stage 2 tournament on Friday 2 March with nine primary schools in attendance.

Maths Puzzle Zone This week’s maths quiz is … Four cards each have a number written on one side and a phrase written on the other. The four numbers are 2, 5, 7 and 12. The four phrases are "Divisible by 7", "Odd", "Prime" and "Greater than 100". On each card, the number written does not have the property written on the other side of the card. What are the four number-property pairs?

Last week’s maths quiz answer … Albert Einstein is experimenting with two unusual clocks which both have 24-hour displays. One clock goes at twice the normal speed. The other clock goes backwards, but at the normal speed. Both clocks show the correct time at 13.00. At what time do the displays on the clocks next agree?
Solution: After x hours, the first clock will have gone forward 2x hours and the second clock will have gone back x hours. So the next time they agree is when they have run through a total of 24 hours together, ie when 2x+x=24, that is when x=8. The correct time is then 21:00.

Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor)
The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year. We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.
Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher)
If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department. Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
