Newsletter Message from the headteacher I was in fewer lessons than usual this week because I attended a conference about how Ofsted will be changing how they judge schools after September. Although a sensible senior leader keeps a weather eye on our regulator, I always try to remind myself that we run this school for our children and not for Ofsted. The lessons I did get into were really interesting. The image below is of a revision aid which was being used by a year 11 as she approaches her French oral examination. Her fellow student was confident that he didn’t need such an aid but undermined his own argument slightly when I enquired in French about his favourite food and he looked at me as if I were speaking Swahili. Or perhaps my French is not what it once was… Meanwhile in Design and Technology a young female designer was working on the product below which is designed to aid the transportation of water in developing countries. The wheel will, go where her hands are placed in the picture and the carrying vessel will adapt to use recycled oil containers. I love working with young people.
Finally, recently I was given a number of issues of The Bailean, the school newsletter of The Ernest Bailey Secondary School, Matlock, a forebear of Highfields. I didn’t have time to look at them for a few days but when I did, I became completely engrossed and took them home. One of my favourite issues is July 1926. They have a feature called ‘A Little Bird Tells Me’ where the headmaster appears to note little things he’s noticed in and out of lessons around the school. One such observation reads, ‘when the doors of the school were opened on the first morning of term there was a stampede of boys for the cloakroom. The leader of the stampede came a nasty cropper on the highly polished floor. Blockhead.’ Times change … health and safety priorities definitely change but over eager boys … not so much.

Newsletter Reminder: Year 8 parent consultation evening Parents/carers of year 8 students are invited to attend the year 8 parents evening that will be held on Tuesday 26 February from 4-7pm in the sports hall at the upper school site to discuss your child’s progress. Joined Up Careers is a Derbyshire-wide initiative made up of local health and social care organisations – partners include Derbyshire County Council, Derby City Council, Derbyshire Community Health Services, Derbyshire Health United, Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, University Hospitals Derby and Burton, Chesterfield Royal Hospitals as well as Private and Voluntary Sector. As the population of over 65s in Derbyshire continues to increase, there is expected to be an unprecedented strain on services. For this reason, Joined Up Careers aims to ensure the current and future workforce is adequately prepared to cope with demand whilst maintaining a high quality of care. One of our main focus areas is promoting and raising the profile of the sector and we are continuously looking for new ways to inspire the next generation. As part of this, we recognise that parents play an integral part of decision making around career and education choices, and evidence shows that outcomes for children are most positive when employers and parents work in partnership. For this reason, we’re asking for your help – Joined Up Careers are eager to develop a parent participation network of those who work in the sector and would be happy to share their story and what their role entails. Newsletter School News Warhammer School League National Championships Students from Highfields School's Warhammer Club took part in the School League National Championships on Saturday 4 February. Whilst the team were beaten by Netherthorpe School, all of the students had an enjoyable experience representing the school, and their behaviour was excellent throughout the day. Andy, the store manager at Games Workshop in Chesterfield, commended the students for their effort and attitude. He was particularly impressed with Samuel in year 13, awarding him a certificate for being the most sporting player, due to him helping younger students (from both schools) in understanding the rules of the game. Students can take part in Games Workshop's School League National Championships next year by joining Warhammer Club. All students that are interested should speak to Mr Crawford.

Newsletter Sports Leaders News Sports Leaders UK qualification The year 11 sports leaders group participated in the level 2 moderation for their Sports Leaders UK qualification (SL2) on Tuesday 5 February. Sports leaders led class 4 from All Saints Junior School on football, netball and basketball. This group of students have been engaged since September in leading events such as the mini soccer tournament at Cavendish Fields, key stage 1 multi-skills festival, key stage 2 tag rugby, key stage 1 and 2 cross country, key stage 2 health festival and the School Sports Partnership year 3 and 4 pentathlon event hosted at Highfields.
SL2 is a nationally recognised qualification that enables successful learners to lead safe, purposeful and enjoyable sport/physical activity, under indirect supervision. The key content of the qualification includes leadership skills including organisation, planning, communication and teamwork through the medium of sport. Total Qualification Time (TQT)

Newsletter School Sports Partnership sports hall athletics finals On Wednesday 6 February Highfields hosted the SSP sports hall athletics finals for years 5 and 6. Highfields sports leaders officiated the competitions, putting to use the skills they gained from being trained by England athletics coach, Mike Frost, and England sports hall athletics coach, Adam Burgess, who were also on hand for the day. Large school athletics took place in the morning with our own primary cluster winners, All Saints, taking part and finishing in gold medal position. All Saints will now represent our primary cluster and SSP at the county finals. The afternoon athletics session saw the small school competition cluster winners participating including Highfields winners, Wessington and Lea primary schools. Wessington finished 8th and Lea came joint 5th with Turnditch Primary. The winner of the small school event was Osmaston Primary who go through to the county finals. Well done to all who entered the event - winners will now go through to the county finals on Tuesday 19 March.

Newsletter Cluster Primary School Sports Assemblies The start of the cluster primary school sports assemblies 2019 took place on Thursday 7 February. The young ambassador team visited Tansley and Darley Dale, encouraging participation in sports and a healthy lifestyle, engaging students in physical activity during the assembly. Ambassadors Evie and George (year 10) and Holly and Ciara (year 12) were brilliant! They also had the opportunity to meet their primary school counterparts, the young bronze ambassadors. The young ambassador (YA) programme is designed to develop exceptional leaders of the future. The programme started in 2006 to bring the ‘Singapore promise’ to life, a commitment made in 2005 by Sebastian Coe to ensure the London 2012 Games had a lasting legacy on young people around the world. The YA programme aimed to see young people driving opportunity, engagement and change for other young people using the Olympic and Paralympic movement as a positive catalyst to do so. From 2007, there were young ambassadors in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales – delivered by the Youth Sport Trust supported by the Home Country Sport Organisations. In 2019, the movement continues to be vibrant – across England embedded within local school sport infrastructures, in Scotland and Wales the programme continues to be centrally funded.
Young ambassadors is designed to build the leadership skills of young people and as a result they are empowered to take on the following roles: Be the youth voice for PE and school sport in their school and community Promote the positive values of sport Be a role model and champion for PE and school sport Increase participation opportunities and healthy lifestyles for everyone YA Peer Leaders This programme provides the first step into leadership for young people, in both primary and secondary schools, to develop their own personal leadership skills by working with their least active peers to increase participation and awareness of healthy lifestyles. During February and March our team of ambassadors will be out in every feeder primary school together with support from Mr Molyneux and Mrs Allen leading our next generation of leaders.

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.

Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or pastoral manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year. Subject specific enquiry (subject teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher.
