Parent/Carer notices Year 8 Parent Consultation Evening The Year 8 Parent Consultation evening takes place on Tuesday 13 February in the Sports Hall from 4pm-6.45pm for parent/carer consultation appointments. Students have been given appointment cards and reminded to make appointments with subject teachers. The tennis courts will be open for additional parking and can be accessed from the top car park at Lumsdale. Please can parents/carers ensure that when parking they do not block vehicular access to the track up to the tennis courts – thank you.
Drama rehearsals during half term for Practical Exams Drama practical exam rehearsals are taking place during February half term with Miss Bonsall on Thursday 22 February to support them with their group performances:
A level students from 10am – 12noon GCSE students from 12noon – 3pm
We strongly encourage students to attend this rehearsal to access help, support and direction to help them achieve the best grades they can.
Advanced Notice: SEND Coffee Afternoon SEND Coffee Afternoon – Wednesday 11 April from 2pm at Starkholmes Following our successful coffee morning on Wednesday, we would like to invite parents/carers of students with SEND to our next meeting. This will be held on Wednesday 11 April from 2pm at Lower School site where we will discuss Learning Support and SEND provision. The coffee morning was originally scheduled for Tuesday 24 April, so if you have reserved this date previously in your diary, please ensure you amend the date to 11 April.

School News Local Matlock Company Supports School Library A well-known Matlock company is helping to boost the reading skills of students at Highfields School by donating money to its library and supporting a scheme aimed at encouraging students to read more books. A donation from William Twigg (Matlock) Ltd, more commonly known as Twiggs, established in the town since 1905 as steelbrokers and engineers merchants, has enabled the library to buy much-needed new books to support the many activities it runs to encourage reading for pleasure in the school. “The school library is busier than ever, which is great, but it also means that books get worn out more quickly and need replacing more often,” explained Mrs Robinson, Librarian. “To keep our students interested in what we offer it’s vital that we have the latest books on the shelves and that they’re in good condition. We need to offer students books that they really want to read, and the kind donation from Twiggs has allowed us to do just that.” As well as making a donation to the library, Twiggs is also providing “The Twiggs Trophy” for the winners of the Year 8 Reading Challenge. Avid readers are currently competing for the trophy, which will be presented to the class that has read the most books by the end of the school year. “We do everything we can to help as many students as possible discover the pleasure of reading a good book,” explained Associate Assistant Headteacher, Mr Rodgers. “Not only because it’s fun and can be a great way to relax, but also because students who are regular readers really do perform better in almost every subject that we teach in school. And reading is like any other activity – the more you practise it, the better you get at it.” Recent international research shows that there is a difference in reading ability equivalent to just over a year's schooling between young people who never read for enjoyment and those who read for up to 30 minutes per day.

These communication skills have never been more important than for a young person entering the job market today.”

HIGHFIELDS LOWER SCHOOL BIG BOOK SWAP Bring a book you have read and no longer want plus £1 to lower school library, anytime between now and 28 February. Then, on World Book Day, Thursday 1 March, you can browse through all the books that have been brought in and take home and keep a book that you’ve never read before, or maybe an old favourite that you’ve always wanted to own. All money raised will be spent on new books for the library.

Newsletter Warhammer Club Success in Games Workshop’s School League Four Sixth Form students that attend Warhammer Club were victorious on Sunday 4 February, when they took part in Games Workshop’s School League. In the event, the team played four games of ‘Warhammer 40,000’ - a tabletop strategy game that uses miniatures that the students have built and painted themselves. As the team won the Regional Heat, they have qualified for the SemiFinal, which will take place at Games Workshop’s headquarters, Warhammer World in Nottingham in March. Whilst the students worked as a team to win the day, there were also individual successes. Year 13 student, John, was voted ‘Best General’ for the strategic skill that he showed in his games, and ‘Best Army’, for the quality of his painting. Year 12 student, Samuel, was awarded ‘Most Honourable’ player, due to his sportsmanship and the positive attitude that he brought to every game. Any students that are interested in joining Warhammer Club, and taking part in these exciting and rewarding events, should speak to Mr Crawford (English department).

Mr Shirtcliffe (Head of PE)
Results: Rugby at Cromford Meadows: On Wednesday 31 January our first team rugby played at Cromford Meadows in horrendous conditions against Hall Cross School. Highfields were playing against a side comprising of Year 12 and Year 13 students from Doncaster. Our boys put on a brave performance and the final score was 5-22 - our try scorer was Danny.
Derbyshire Schools’ Cross Country Championships 2018: A number of Highfields students joined the Dales Cross Country team with other Derbyshire Dales competing schools in the County Championships that took place at the weekend. Rugby Success at Abbotsholme Our first XV was reduced to 11 on Wednesday 7 February for a 7s tournament at Abbotsholme. Our first opponents were the hosts and some quick ball work and fast feet meant that they were defeated. The boys stayed focussed and kept warm whilst other matches were played. A different line up from Highfields then faced Chellaston who looked to be a tough prospect, but some good work by the forwards in defence meant that Chellaston were also dispatched. Our final match was against Lichfield and after a heart-stopping mistake which lead to an early try from the opposition Highfields rallied and showed their true colours - three victories out of three! Well done to the team and thanks to Dave Ball from Matlock Rugby who volunteered to coach. Mrs Boam

Newsletter Young Ambassador Assemblies On Monday 5 February Young Ambassador assemblies took place at South Darley Primary School and Tansley Primary School delivered by Matt and Evie. Harry and Jack lead the Young Ambassador assembly at Winster on Tuesday 6 February and Lucy and Holly, presented the Young Ambassador assemblies at St Joseph’s Primary School and St Giles Primary school on Thursday 8 February.
The Young Ambassador assemblies were delivered by the students, along with PE Apprentices. Well done to all – you did us proud!
PE Apprentice Update Mrs Allen and Mrs Turner observed Miss Tabbenor taking a lesson with primary school students at Eyam Primary School.
Youth Sport Trust On Tuesday 6 February the Youth Sport Trust research group, Spear, were in school to see PE Apprentice, Miss Elliot, deliver a wrestling session to Year 7 students as part of the evaluation of our Combat Hub programme.

Newsletter School Sports Partnership (SSP) Sports Hall Athletics The SSP sports hall athletics finals took place on Wednesday 7 February, hosted by Highfields and the Sports Leadership Academy students in Year 9 officiated the event run by England Athletics.
All Saints won the Sports Hall Finals for the Big Schools and St Joseph’s came 3rd. All Saints will go on to take part in the County Finals. The Small School final was won by Longstone with Lea coming 6th and South Darley 9th. Our Highfields Sports Leaders were superb – well done to all taking part.
School Games On Friday 9 February School Games Co-ordinator, Janice Price, was in school to train our PE Apprentices on the School Games ideal and School Games crew.

Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor)
The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year. We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.
Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher)
If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department. Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
