Thursday 9 November – U13 Derbyshire Cup Fixture Match Report – Miss Warburton Highfields started eager and full of hope, but unfortunately came up against a physical opponent, which put our girls on the back foot. We soon found ourselves behind and under pressure. Highfields continued to battle and suffered for it, with a poke in the eye for one of our midfielders. Showing true resilience Highfields pushed forward several times but were met by a solid Noel Baker defence and by half time we were 4-0 down.

Newsletter An uplifting and inspirational half time team talk got the team back on track and soon it was 4-1 with a great goal from Sophie. We quickly got back in position and were on the attack again, this time Michaella surged from the half way line, skipping pass Noel Baker players until the centre back came storming in and knocked Michaella off the ball in the area, resulting in a penalty for Highfields. Captain, Sophie, stepped up to the spot but the keeper unfortunately read Sophie’s mind and saved the kick. Again Highfields dusted themselves off and rallied around. The opposition started to feel the pressure of Highfields and stepped their game up, driving towards goal a number of times, but were met with a determined away side. At that point Highfields broke and another run from Sophie supplied a fantastic ball to Keira, who’s initial shot was saved then fumbled by the keeper but a goal hungry Keira followed up the shot and scored - 4-2. Highfields confidence grew and again we were back on the attack. As the light started to fade another great strike from Keira made it 4-3. As our girls started to build momentum the ref put his whistle to his lips and blew time on our Derbyshire cup dreams. The girls have played out of their skins and shown what Highfields are about. They were a credit to the school today and we are very proud of them all.

School News Faraday Challenge Day Mr Richardson

On Thursday 19 October a group of Year 8 students represented Highfields in the Faraday Challenge Day, held at Buxton Community School. The day was set up to promote science, engineering and technology. It gave students the opportunity to research, design and make solutions to a real engineering problem. The Challenge was all about letting the students be creative, work as a team and use their own problem solving skills to explore their capabilities as engineers. Our team, comprising of Chloe, Michael, Cameron, Maria, James and Abigail did fantastically well and designed a very creative Harry Potter themed amusement ride for Thorpe Park in Hampshire. The photo shows the team presenting their designs to all the participants. Well done to everyone involved.

Buy discounted books and raise money for the school library Mrs Robinson

Scholastic Book Club is an excellent opportunity to purchase some very popular children’s and young adults’ books at sometimes very heavily discounted prices, all in time for Christmas. Thank you to the many parents/carers and staff who purchased books through the Scholastic Book Club in the last twelve months – your purchases have raised over £100 worth of new books for the school library! We are at the moment running our latest Scholastic promotion. There are some great deals – especially on popular series, such as Skulduggery Pleasant, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Geek Girl – which would make fantastic Christmas presents. Please visit http://schools.scholastic.co.uk/highfields-de4 to browse the latest books available and order online. For every £1 you spend, our school will earn 25p in Scholastic Rewards which will be spent on new books for the school library. All orders will be delivered to school and books will be sent home with your child, so there is no postage to pay. Alternatively, you can arrange to collect them yourself from school. If you would like to purchase any books, please place your order online by 1 December 2017.

Cancellation of Christmas Concert 2017 We regret to inform you that this year’s Christmas concerts, scheduled for 12-13 December 2017, will not be taking place. This is owing to Mr Rowley’s impending paternity leave for the birth of his second child. After careful thought and consideration, we feel it only fair to communicate this message to parents, carers and students at the earliest possible time so as to avoid confusion and disruption moving forwards. The music department is extremely committed to showcasing the musical talents of our school and as a result are planning to extend the Easter concert in March to include two evening performances rather than the usual one. Thank you for your understanding on this matter. The Music department staff would like to take this (early) opportunity to wish you all a very happy Christmas and look forward to seeing you in the new year at the 2018 Easter concerts! Maths Puzzle Zone We will include a puzzle page each week in our newsletter with the answer to the question in the following week’s newsletter.

This week’s maths quiz is … Miss King, the teacher, has four cards. On each card is a number: 59 996

59 943

60 026

62 312

She gives one card to each pupil. The pupils look at their card and say a clue. Anna says, ‘My number is 60 000 to the nearest 10 thousand.’ Bashir says, ‘My number has exactly 600 hundreds in it.’ Charis says, ‘My number is 59900 to the nearest hundred.’ David says, ‘My number is 60 000 to the nearest 10.’ Can you work out which card each pupil had?

Solution:

See next week’s newsletter

Last week’s maths quiz answer … Think about the number 34 567 800. Say this number aloud. Round this number to the nearest million. What does the digit ‘8’ represent? What does the digit ‘7’ represent? Divide this number by 100 and say your answer aloud. Divide this number by 1000 and say your answer aloud.

Solution: 35 million to the nearest million The 8 represents 800 The 7 represents 7000 When divided by 100 it’s 345 678 (three hundred and forty five thousand, six hundred and seventy eight. When divided by 1000 it is 34 567.8 (thirty four thousand, five hundred and sixty seven point eight)

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request. Please contact the relevant Pastoral Manager at school to update your details if you do not currently receive email communications from Highfields: Mrs Green - Years 7 & 8 Mrs Hutchings - Years 9, 10 & 11 Mrs Bumby - Sixth Form
