Highfields Careers Convention Mrs Turner

Last week we held our first Careers Convention at Highfields that proved a great success. There was excellent support from the students across all year groups along with their parents/carers. Thank you to all of you who took time out to attend the evening, and to the employers, colleges, training providers and universities that attended and made this event possible.

Samaritan’s Purse Shoebox Appeal Miss Warburton

Students from 8EWA supported the Shoebox Appeal and managed to fill 14 shoe boxes containing small toys, stationery, colouring books and hygiene items for children overseas and raised £70, which will cover the shipping cost of all the boxes. The students did this in just under two weeks with a little support from some generous staff members. The shoeboxes will be delivered worldwide to children who have been affected by war, poverty, natural disaster, famine and disease. Thank you to students, parents/carers and staff who supported 8EWA.

Highfields Patron of Reading update Mrs Brown

Over this term and next term, Lucy Adlington is donating brand new copies of her favourite teenage books to the school library. The first one (Earthsea) arrived in school this week and was borrowed by a Year 9 student within minutes - a great start! Follow updates on the Highfields library twitter account @highfieldslib

Highfields celebrates success at book quiz Mrs Robinson

A team of four Year 8 students have made it through to the UK finals of the international Kids’ Lit Quiz, a competition to test students between the ages of 11 and 13 on their knowledge of children’s literature. Last week the team attended the East Midlands regional heat of the competition at Lady Manners School in Bakewell. They correctly answered questions on a wide range of genres and beat 24 other teams from schools across the region and beyond to achieve first place and become the regional champions! On Tuesday 5 December Isobel, Rhianna, Finley and Amelia will be heading off to the Kids’ Lit Quiz national finals, to be held at the City of London School for Girls at the Barbican in London. There they will compete against teams from across all parts of the UK and the winners will be invited to take part in the Kids’ Lit Quiz world final in New Zealand next summer. “The students were fantastic,” said team coach Mrs Robinson. “The questions were really tough and their knowledge of literature was very impressive. We are so proud of them!” Whatever the outcome at the national final, this will be a fantastic experience for the students. The event is hosted by the Sheriff of London and will be attended by several well-known children’s authors. The students will be able to meet and chat with the authors and team members from other schools at a celebration tea party to be held at the end of the day. We wish the team the very best of luck in the next stage of the competition.

Newsletter Children in Need – Friday 17 November Today we were raising money for Children in Need. Students were allowed to wear non-uniform or onesies for the day, donating £1 to Children in Need for the privilege. Students took part in a variety of fund raising activities taking place across both school sites including popcorn and spotty cookie sales, hit the spot with the football, face painting, festival make up, nail painting, spotty hair and tombola at Starkholmes. At Lumsdale there were cake sales, a rock band performing, computer games, sponge throwing and filling the H in the coffee bar area with coins. Thank you to everyone who took part and donated money to Children in Need, which will help make a real difference to the lives of children. We will report on the day’s events in next week’s newsletter.

Parent/Carer Notices Polite request – dropping off and collecting students We would like to remind parents/carers that students should be dropped off and collected outside of the school site in the mornings and at the end of the school day. Parents/carers should not enter or park in the school car park allocated for staff and visitors or bus bays allocated for school transport. Failure to observe this request causes particular problems at Starkholmes (lower school site). We are always keen to be good neighbours and to protect the safety of all pedestrians and road users. With this in mind please exercise care and consideration during busy times and take care not to block driveways or to use private car parks of local businesses. Many thanks for your co-operation. Newsletter Anti-Bullying Week - 13-17 November 2017

This week is National Anti-Bullying Week. We are committed at Highfields to do all we can to prevent bullying in school. Some year groups have watched the This Morning “Be Kind” Campaign in assemblies and have been encouraged by their Heads of Year to take the “Be Kind Pledge”. We have recently done work on using language that is not homophobic and there are posters around school reminding students to think about the words they choose to use carefully. As a follow up to this we are currently talking about the difference between banter and bullying in form time. For parents/carers that are concerned about bullying there is an excellent resource produced by the Anti-bullying Alliance which you may find helpful (https://www.anti-bullyingalliance.org.uk/toolsinformation/all-about-bullying/what-bullying). Some students confuse friendship fall outs or one unkind comment with bullying and this resource explains clearly what bullying is. If you are worried that your child may be being bullied, please contact their Head of Year in the first instance. We are currently reviewing our school anti-bullying policy and would welcome parent/carer contributions both to this policy and a range of other policies. We will be running a parent/carer policy session during January that parents/carers are welcome to attend – further details will be sent out nearer the time.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request. Please contact the relevant Pastoral Manager at school to update your details if you do not currently receive email communications from Highfields: Mrs Green - Years 7 & 8 Mr Tidmarsh - Years 9, 10 & 11 Mrs Bumby - Sixth Form
