Newsletter Message from the headteacher This interesting article popped up on my Facebook feed this week: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/jan/10/by-mollycoddling-our-children-werefuelling-mental-illness-in-teenagers?CMP=share_btn_fb In my first letter to you I wrote that I had one aim: to give your children the ‘attributes, skills and knowledge they need to thrive in a changing world’. On the one hand we want our school to be a place where children feel secure enough to have fun with their learning and take creative risks; this requires that we develop a safe, ordered environment in which children know where they stand. On the other hand, we want to begin to prepare our children for a world which requires adaptability, resilience and the ability to deal with challenges. As parents we face a challenge in establishing the balance between these two considerations. Out and about as usual in lessons this week. Like all senior leaders I am spending a lot of time in year 11 lessons checking in on students as they prepare to take their GCSEs. It was really good to see a teacher in English being very specific about how to revise effectively. During my visit the teacher focused on a YouTube video (Mr Bruff) which featured a rap which included numerous quotes from An Inspector Calls, Romeo and Juliet etc. Generally speaking boys are less effective revisers than girls. If you have a boy try to ensure that they spend their revision time productively. There are students who can revise more effectively in two minutes using sensible strategies than others can manage in twenty. Meanwhile, students in geography were deciding that contour lines still beat satnav if you are going to head off the beaten path. And in A level product design, a student had designed this bed side mirror unit. I tried to explain that the very last thing I need to see first thing every morning is my own face, but he didn’t understand.
In my last school I remember becoming engrossed in a lesson and, suddenly realising I might be overstaying my welcome, I asked the teacher what time he would like me to leave. He responded, rather cattily I thought, by asking what time it had been 20 minutes ago. By contrast, Highfields teachers and TAs are hugely patient and I thank them for letting me sample a little bit of their classroom life every day. A Marsh Headteacher

Newsletter Year 10 parents/carers – Joined Up Careers Derbyshire We have been asked by Derbyshire County Council to circulate the following information to parents/carers of students in year 10.
January 2019 Dear Parent/Carer Parent Participation – Health & Social Care Do you work within health & social care? If so, we want to hear from you! Joined Up Careers is a Derbyshire-wide initiative made up of local health and social care organisations – partners include Derbyshire County Council, Derby City Council, Derbyshire Community Health Services, Derbyshire Health United, Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, University Hospitals Derby and Burton, Chesterfield Royal Hospitals as well as Private and Voluntary Sector. As the population of over 65s in Derbyshire continues to increase, there is expected to be an unprecedented strain on services. For this reason, Joined Up Careers aims to ensure the current and future workforce is adequately prepared to cope with demand whilst maintaining a high quality of care. One of our main focus areas is promoting and raising the profile of the sector and we are continuously looking for new ways to inspire the next generation. As part of this, we recognise that parents play an integral part of decision making around career and education choices, and evidence shows that outcomes for children are most positive when employers and parents work in partnership. For this reason, we’re asking for your help – Joined Up Careers are eager to develop a parent participation network of those who work in the sector and would be happy to share their story and what their role entails. Newsletter School News Mock interviews for year 11 students Year 11 students had the opportunity to experience the taste of a real interview on Friday 25 and Monday 28 January. Our local business community along with representatives from local colleges, apprenticeship providers and school governors generously gave up their time to interview our students. We are incredibly grateful to all involved for their commitment to the school. The students were put through their paces which gave them a valuable insight into what a job interview can entail. Our students found the experience extremely beneficial and it opened their eyes to what lies beyond the school environment. One of our students commented "I was really nervous at first, but I found it a very useful experience for the future. I have found out what I need to improve on and I know I won’t experience those initial nerves in my next interview." Feedback was also gathered from our interviewers: “It was good to speak to the students who had a varied range of skills and listen to the plans they had for the future. I found most students already had an idea of what they wanted to do after GCSE and had a good revision plan in place to get them to their goal. Most of the students were very confident and chatty, some of them I would quite happily have offered an apprenticeship to within one of the companies I manage.” “I thought both afternoons were great and really enjoyed the interaction between myself and the students. There was a great mix of characters who held different views on their strengths and weaknesses and I was surprised to see how focussed some of the students were with their future plans. I had to highlight to a couple of students the importance of ensuring CV’s are checked for spelling before printing and some had missing details such as name and address. There was also an opportunity to express my thoughts on the need to ensure that when a student is going for an interview in the future that they spend time researching the company and not just look at the first page of their website which often happens in real life! All students appeared to hold the school in high regard which is a credit to all your staff. I look forward to carrying out this again next year”

Newsletter Year 7 L2L lessons The L2L class this term is focusing on career pathways, interests and how to interview well. As part of their L2L lesson on Wednesday 30 January, 7JB invited Mr Rodgers to attend to find out about teaching as a career and the role Mr Rodgers assumes in school. This was a fun 50 mins as the class had prepared lots of questions and Mr Rodgers gave us all some insightful answers - hospitality biscuits went down well!

Newsletter Key Stage 1 ball skills On Friday 25 January the key stage 1 ball skills day took place with 178 students taking part from nine primary schools – All Saints, Castle View, Darley Dale, Elton, Lea, South Darley, Tansley, Wessington and Winster. There were five schools participating in the morning session and four in the afternoon and the young 5 and 6 year olds took part in shooting, dribbling, target throwing, throw and catch and relays with different sized equipment. The sports leaders from years 7-10 were fantastic in their delivery as ever. We look forward to welcoming this age group again in the summer term for our key stage 1 dance and key stage 1 OAA day.

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.

Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or pastoral manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year.
