School News Year 11 Mock Interviews Year 11 students had the opportunity to experience the taste of a real interview on Friday 26 January.

Our local business community, along with representatives from local colleges and our school Governors, gave up their time generously to interview our students. We are incredibly grateful to all involved for their commitment to the school.

The students were put through their paces, which gave them a valuable insight into what a job interview can entail. Our students found the experience extremely beneficial and it opened their eyes to what lies beyond the school environment.

One of our students commented "I was really nervous at first, but I found it a very useful experience for the future. I have found out what I need to improve on and I know I won’t experience those initial nerves in my next interview."

Newsletter Evening of Theatre Last year we introduced a new annual event, the ‘Evening of Theatre’ and we held our second Evening of Theatre last week. This event gives students something to work towards as they dedicate themselves to extra-curricular clubs each week. It has also offered our younger students (Years 7 and 8) the opportunity to build their confidence, perform with friends and get involved in a whole school event. So another mini musical was created; an abridged and adapted version of 'Annie'.

The incredibly strong cast was made up of forty hugely impressive Year 7 and 8 students. Eva, a Year 7 student, shone as Annie with her strong vocal performance and endearing nature. Starring alongside her as Miss Hannigan was Year 8 student Maisie - creatively mischievous and scary, using detailed facial expressions perfectly. Finley (also Year 8) was wonderful as friendly Mr Warbucks.

Another special mention should go to the incredibly funny Lily played by the very talented Maria, Charlie as Rooster who also gave a confident, comedic performance and Amelia as kind and caring Grace Farrell.

As well as the mini musical, the Evening of Theatre provided the opportunity to enjoy the work of another 70 students from upper school Musical Theatre Club, lower school Drama Club, Year 9 class work and A level & GCSE exam pieces. Stand out performances included Year 9 student Jamie, who sang Electricity' from the hugely popular Billy Elliott; the cast of upper school Musical Theatre who showcased a knockout performance of Flash Bang Wallop alongside a band created by Year 12 students; and Year 12 students Billy, Jack, Ben and Jamie who created a hilarious John Godber inspired performance about the rise of Donald Trump!

Head of Drama, Emily Bonsall, said, "Our Evening of Theatre created a real buzz around the school and I was so impressed with the talent and commitment displayed by our students. It was great to build on the wonderful work of Little Shop of Horrors, our summer 2017 production. I hope to see all of these students performing again in our 2018 school production in a few months’ time!"

Sports Update

Mr Shirtcliffe (Head of PE)

Fixtures: Wednesday 7 February 2018: First team Rugby are playing on Wednesday at Abbotsholm – 2.15pm kick off, leaving school at 12.45pm.

Sports Leaders

Mrs Allen (School Sports Co-ordinator) Our Sports Leaders and Sports Apprentices are extremely busy supporting sporting activities not only in school, but also within our partner primary schools and across the wider community.

Sports Leaders Notices: Next week five primary school assemblies are taking place ably led by our team of Young Ambassadors. The team are in South Darley, Tansley, Winster, St Joseph’s and St Giles primary schools.

Tuesday 6 February: Youth Sport Trust researchers are in school to see PE Apprentice, Miss Elliott, deliver a wrestling session as part of our Combat Hub programme.

Wednesday 7 February: The School Sports Partnership Sports Hall Athletics Finals are taking place at Highfields for the full day. England Athletics are coming to deliver the sessions along with our trained team of Year 9 Sports Leaders.

Friday 9 February: School Games Organiser, Janice Price, is coming to deliver a workshop for the PE Apprentices on the School Games.

Sports Leaders News SSP Mini Basketball Finals Well done to All Saints Junior School who finished in Bronze medal position at the SSP mini basketball finals on Tuesday 30 January.

PE Apprentice Update On Tuesday 30 January Mrs Allen visited PE Apprentice, Miss Tabbenor at Anthony Gell School where she delivered a netball session on footwork and shooting. Miss Tabbenor is following the level 2 Qualification in PE and School Sport.

Table Tennis Competition The Year 9 and 10 Table Tennis competition is nearing its conclusion. There were quarter-final and semi-final matches taking place on Wednesday 31 January under the watchful eye of PE Apprentice Mr Molyneux who has organised the competition.

Ball Skills On Friday 2 February over 200 Key Stage 1 students from our Highfields Cluster Primary Schools came to Highfields to experience our Ball Skills event run by Highfields Sports Leadership Academy – further details next week’s newsletter.

Parent/Carer notices We really appreciate parents/carers working with us to support our school policies and wanted you to be aware that we are talking to students in assemblies to remind them of the following:

Mobile phones Mobile phones are not to be used in lessons unless instructed by the teacher. If any student is caught using a mobile phone when not authorised, it will be confiscated and can be collected from the Head of Year office at the end of the day. If a student has their mobile confiscated on three or more occasions, parents/carers will be contacted to come into school to collect it.

Illness If students feel unwell during the school day they should report to reception or the Head of Year office, where a decision about sending a student home will be made. Students should not contact parents/carers directly to collect them from school without consulting school staff.

Uniform We are reminding students about the expectations of adhering to the school’s uniform policy.

Hoodies are not allowed in school and if any student is wearing one on the school site it will be confiscated and taken to the Head of Year office for collection at the end of the day. If a student has their hoodie confiscated on three or more occasions, parents/carers will be contacted to come into school to collect the hoodie.

We really appreciate parents, carers and students working with us to keep our school looking smart. A school uniform helps to promote a community identity as well as keeping students safe. It makes life fair for all students when the same rules apply.

If you require further clarification of the school uniform, full guidance is given on school website and if you have any questions about our policy, please contact your relevant Head of Year.

Year 9 Immunisations As detailed in letters issued to parents/carers of students in Year 9, vaccinations will be given to Year 9 students by the NHS Immunisation Team on Monday 5 February.

Students will receive two vaccinations - Meningococcal ACWY (MenACWY) vaccine (to protect against four different types of meningococcal bacteria that can cause meningitis) and the Teenage Booster vaccine (to help to protect against diphtheria, tetanus and polio).

Newsletter Feedback Survey results Thank you to everyone who took part in our recent survey. The feedback provided has been really useful.

Here’s a quick summary of what you told us: Question

On a scale of 1-5, where 1 is useless and 5 is extremely useful, how would you rate the usefulness of the information provided in our newsletter?

76% of responses were ‘4’ or ‘5’ and 9% were ‘1’ or ‘2’.

This tells us that most respondents find the information provided in our newsletter to be useful, but some do not.

We currently publish one newsletter per week.

62% of respondents said that this is ‘about right’.

The remainder said that it is ‘too frequent’. Of these: 20% would prefer once per month; 10% would prefer once per half term and 7% would prefer once per fortnight.

This tells us that most respondents feel that the frequency of the newsletter is about right, but a significant number feel that it is too frequent.

Are there any other comments you would like to make, or changes to the newsletter that you would like to suggest?

There were a range of responses to this question. These responses told us that:

Some respondents feel that information that is ‘repeated’ each week has less value than information that is specific to the week the newsletter is published. However, other respondents value the accessibility of such information in every newsletter.

Suggestions Following responses to earlier questions, there were also suggestions that we explore publishing a ‘full’ newsletter less frequently and a ‘slim’ newsletter containing information pertinent to that particular week, weekly.

Some respondents suggested that the newsletter could contain links to website sections containing the more general school information.

Other suggestions included requests for:   

Information to be organised by year group A list of form tutors to be published Information to be published relating to aspects of school activity which don’t currently routinely feature

Changes resulting from this feedback We will be considering the feedback provided with a view to making improvements to the newsletter which we will outline in the coming weeks. Some respondents may have noticed small changes made already!

Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor)

The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year.

We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.

Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher)

If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department.

Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only.

Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
