Newsletter Message from the headteacher Twelve lessons this week. It was really good to see upper school girls in a PE lesson undergoing a pretty intense boxing based workout. I’m really passionate about girls being involved in sport and it frustrates me that relatively few of the students who use break and lunchtime to play sport are girls despite the fact that a number of the school’s highest performing athletes are female. Elsewhere I was asked to judge two rival pitches from BTEC business students. Both were really strong presentations but in the end the group won who were most credible. Explaining ‘credibility’ to the students was interesting because human beings use so many verbal and nonverbal cues to establish credibility from eye contact to personal presentation to use of language and spelling and grammar in their PowerPoints. Meanwhile in year 10, young artists were trying to learn the visual language of an influential artist by mastering their style. The quality of their work spoke volumes about the standards and expectations of their teacher. Their books (see images below) were absolutely brilliant with even their various annotations being artful and visually engaging.
Finally, I went last night to our evening of theatre. Having spent most of the day wrestling with the periphery of educational leadership (contracts, risk assessments, human resources, cuts, budgets, policies, Ofsted etc) it was a good reminder of what really matters. The pieces showcased included work exploring gang culture, the suffragette movement, relationships, violence, Asperger’s, loss and power. Especially in the devised pieces, students had absorbed evidence and key concepts around these issues and then used the performing arts to communicate their ideas. Their technique and repertoire in doing so was really striking from song, to physical theatre, to musical theatre, to dance and all invested with real commitment and belief. For me, what was happening up there on stage is what really matters: young people reaching out and forming ideas about the world around them and then using a range of techniques to communicate with, entertain and, in some cases, confront their audience. I would like to recognise the work of Emily Bonsall and her team in challenging these students to reach such a high standard of self-expression. Next stop: Legally Blonde - The Musical. Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Illness If your child is off school with an illness please inform school for each day of their absence by contacting the relevant pastoral manager – Mrs Green (years 7-8), Miss Carline (years 9-11) or Mrs Bumby (sixth form). This will help reduce time taken to make calls home to check on students who are not in lessons.

Newsletter Advance notices: Year 11 parent consultation evening – 5 February at Lumsdale Parents/carers of year 11 students are invited to attend the year 11 parents evening that will be held on Tuesday 5 February from 4-7pm in the sports hall at Lumsdale. Year 8 parent consultation evening – 26 February at Lumsdale Parents/carers of year 8 students are invited to attend the year 8 parents evening that will be held on Tuesday 26 February from 4-7pm in the sports hall at the upper school site. The evening provides an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with subject teachers and we would encourage you to bring your son/daughter to this meeting so that they can contribute to the discussion. An appointment system is essential to the efficient running of the evening and I would ask you to ensure that your son/daughter makes appointments at times convenient to you, and that you keep to these times as far as possible. A maximum of five minutes per appointment is available because of the numbers in teaching groups. However, some members of staff teach several groups and may not have time to see all parents/carers. If you have real concerns in a particular subject, please do not hesitate to contact the member of staff at a later date, if you are unsuccessful on the evening. Please note the evening will end at 7pm prompt and the last appointment time is 6.45pm. Students will be given an appointment sheet on Tuesday 5 February to record appointments - please tell them what times you would like appointments. Newsletter Reminder: snow closures – school strategy/risk assessment Feedback from parents/carers, students and staff suggests that communication over snow closures needs to be clear and timely. The handling of snow closures will always create discussion within a school community. I hope that this at least explains our approach in advance of any snow closure. Current challenges around making the school site and approaches clear after snow or heavy ice: Derbyshire County Council prioritises main routes and will not guarantee early clearance and gritting. A local business has agreed to clear both sites but cannot grit. Other companies will not grit because of a perceived fear of litigation. Clearing both sites takes longer than schools who have to clear only one site. We have investigated the purchase of a mini tractor/snowplough/gritter but cannot justify a significant expense for equipment that is needed for only a few days a year. Ice is just as big a risk to opening as snow and is as hard to clear with current resources. There have been a number of accidents on our sites caused by ice and this has resulted in injury to staff and students with resultant absences from work/school. Risks of opening when heavy snow or ice is expected/forecast: Snow and ice increases risk of road traffic accidents for student and staff. Bus services are often cancelled which results in some students being stranded with parents/carers being forced to make arrangements. Student numbers will be high (many are local) but staff numbers may be very low (our staff travel in from locations such as Sheffield, Stoke and Buxton). This can result in students being unsupervised on site. Usually when school is open following heavy snow, lessons are adversely affected and staff can find themselves supervising very large numbers of students with a consequent impact on learning. The sites are surrounded by steep hills and this provides further risk to motorists and pedestrians following heavy snow/ice. Where late notice is given that school is opening (as leaders seek to assess the situation until the last possible moment), parents/carers have reported that pressure is put on them to revise childcare arrangements. Early clearance cannot be guaranteed. Accidents on school sites following snow or ice have resulted in injury, sustained absence and costly litigation in the recent past. Staff/student time which can be used for productive work from home can be wasted on long and hazardous journeys to the school sites only to find lessons being badly disrupted or cancelled due to staff and student absence. Risk of NOT opening when heavy snow or ice is expected/forecast: Parents/carers are caused inconvenience by having to adapt childcare arrangements Learning time is lost, even when students and staff work from home (teachers will issue work to complete via Show My Homework to undertake at home) The leadership of the school will incur criticism if forecast heavy snow does not arrive despite school being closed. School strategy regarding snow closure: November 2018-March 2019 1. The school will seek to communicate clearly with parents/carers and local cluster primary schools when heavy snow or ice is forecast or expected. 2. To minimise the risk to students and staff, and to facilitate childcare adaptations for parents and carers, the school will aim to close as soon as heavy overnight snowfall is probable. 3. The school will seek to announce closure before midnight and definitely before 6.00am. The school accepts that this may result in widespread criticism if heavy snow does not fall or does but doesn’t settle.

Newsletter Additional guidance for parents/carers - school emergency closure procedure Please read the guidance below on the steps we take if we are forced to close school in an emergency, ie due to extreme weather conditions or equipment failures associated with the change in the weather. We should stress at the outset that this is something we only do with great reluctance, but our overriding concern is the health and safety of our students and sometimes such action is unavoidable. Snow – during school hours: If there is a heavy snowfall during the day while students are already in school, and it becomes clear that getting home at the normal time may be difficult or dangerous, we may decide to close early. If we do close, the following instructions are given to students before they are allowed to leave the premises: •
If students know for sure that they have a safe destination with someone to look after them (such as their own home or a relative, neighbour or friend’s home) and provided they are sure they can reach this destination, they may leave when asked to do so.
•
If students are uncertain whether there is someone at home, they need to check before departure and should telephone to make sure of their arrangements. The school will make its telephones available free of charge to those who do not have a mobile phone, but obviously this may delay departure as we only have three external lines. Students should only leave once they are certain of their arrangements.
It would be helpful if you can discuss at home what you want your son/daughter to do in the event of school closing early so that they know of arrangements in advance. If students cannot make arrangements and are not sure what to do and where to go, they must remain in school in the care of the staff of the school until suitable arrangements have been made. A member of staff will always remain in school with students until everyone has been collected. Snow – overnight: In the event of heavy snow overnight we would ask parents/carers to use their discretion in deciding if it is safe for their child to set off for school. Emergency closures happen perhaps once or twice a year. The school will inform you of closure as soon as the decision is made to close the school, by various means: the school website; BBC Radio Derby or Peak FM and by text and/or email. Once students have been sent home, students and parents/carers should listen to local radio or check our website for further instructions about our plans for the following day. This information is usually posted on the school website by 7.30am each morning. Breakdown of equipment: If, as happens very occasionally, we suffer a complete breakdown of equipment, depriving the school of its basic services, such as electricity or water, we may be forced to send students home for their own safety. The same procedure will be followed as for a snow closure.

Newsletter Student Parliament news food bank A reminder that students in Highfields School Parliament have set up a collection point to support local food bank, Jigsaw, based in Matlock. The Jigsaw Food Bank initiative provides practical help with a purpose, taking donated goods, in particular canned and dried foods and providing support to people during a crisis. These maybe people unable to provide for themselves due to loss of income, employment or benefits. If you would like to donate food Jigsaw have provided the following list of items they need:

Newsletter Lion TV casing for talented young chefs for The Restaurant Dream Team
Do you have a passion for food and cooking? Are you good at coming up with cool designs and ideas? Are you charming and good with people? Are you in school years 5-9? Then you and some friends could have what it takes to become our Restaurant Dream Team! Our top celebrity restaurant expert and chef are on a mission to find a group of friends capable of running their own restaurant. They’re looking for teams of six – three in the kitchen, three on the restaurant floor – who can design their own pop up restaurant, create a themed menu, then cook and serve dinner to a room full of guests under professional conditions. Teams go head to head in a restaurant that’s been split down the middle with only one progressing to the next round. If you think you and your friends are up to the task and you want to apply you need to get permission and ask your parent/carer to fill out their bits of the application form available from our website - we must have permission from your parent/carers before sending us any personal details, and we will need the form to be signed by them and a recent photo of you included. East Midlands Sports Leadership Academy of the Year Award On Friday 18 January, Rob Watson, Regional Development Officer of Sports Leaders UK visited Highfields School to present the East Midlands Sports Leadership Academy of the Year Award. During his visit Rob chatted to the PE apprentices and saw video footage of their leadership journey. Rob is looking forward to speaking to sports leaders and their parents/carers at the Sports Leadership Academy Awards Evening on Thursday 11 April from 6-8pm in the Wheeldon Hall – further details to follow.

Derbyshire Dales County Championships Thank you to our students who ventured out on a very cold Saturday morning last weekend to represent Derbyshire Dales in the County Championships. As ever they conducted themselves impeccably and fought hard to the finish, with some excellent results:

Year 10 football Year 10 boys played against Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School at Highfields last Friday in the under 15's cup. Unfortunately, the boys were eventually and somewhat cruelly knocked out on penalties after a tight match. However, there were so many strong performances, notably James, who coolly slotted a last minute penalty into the roof of the net to equalise and always reminded their striker of his presence, but most impressively, they showed great character and conducted themselves admirably. Compared to the 5-2 drubbing against QEGS last time, this was a much improved performance - well done to all those involved! Mr Roberts

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.

Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or pastoral manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year. Subject specific enquiry (subject teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. School to home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only.
