School News Year 7 Book Award 2018 Around 30 members of Year 7 Book Club are avidly reading the five books on the shortlist for this year’s Highfields Year 7 Book Award. “We take part in a scheme run by the charity, Book Trust. They send us multiple copies of five titles that they believe will become future classics,” explained Mrs Robinson. “At Year 7 Book Club we’ve decided to use these books as the shortlist for our own book award and students will be voting for their overall favourite, which will be revealed after Easter.” At the last Book Club meeting students voted for the book that they think has the best cover. “Pax”, by Sara Pennypacker, was the clear winner based on the cover alone. The books we will be reading over the next few weeks are:

Newsletter Year 13 A level chemistry students have samples analysed at Loughborough University As part of the A level chemistry course, Year 13 students have to complete 12 assessed practicals. One of these is the preparation, purification and analysis of aspirin. Chemistry teacher, Mrs Harrison took advantage of Loughborough University's offer of a free school service, where they analyse the purity of the aspirin samples the students have made. After the
results were analysed two students, Ben and Ben’s samples turned out to be 99.4% pure aspirin! They carried out two types of testing for us: HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) and FTIR (Fourier-Transform InfraRed Spectroscopy) Along with our results, they provide links on how to review the data. Emily, Ben and Ben are pictured below with their results.
A total amount of £793.92 was raised by students and staff on 19 December by wearing Christmas jumpers - thank you to everyone for taking part and donating money to Save the Children.

Sports Leaders News Table Tennis Tournament Mr Molyneux has been running the Table Tennis tournament during lunchtimes in the Sports Hall at Lumsdale on Wednesdays which has proved to be a success with students and we are reaching the closing stages of the competition now – more details to follow.
Mixed Football Competition On Fridays in the Sports Hall at Lumsdale Miss Spencer, Miss Elliott and Miss Tabbenor have been running the mixed football competition. We are in week 3 now and seeing some close fought games.
Ambassador School Programme Launch Mr Riggott and Mr Shirtcliffe travel to the London Oval Cricket Ground today, Friday 26 January, for the launch of the Ambassador School Programme that Highfields have been selected to be a part of in 2018.

Parent/Carer notices Year 11 Parent Consultation Evening The Year 11 Parent Consultation evening takes place on Tuesday 30 January in the Sports Hall from 4pm-6.45pm for parent/carer consultation appointments. Students have been given appointment cards and reminded to make appointments with subject teachers. Phil Nelson, the school’s Independent Careers Advisor, will be available during the evening to talk to parents/carers and students. Representatives from Chesterfield College and the Apprenticeship Scheme will also be available after 4.30pm. The tennis courts will be open for additional parking and can be accessed from the top car park at Lumsdale. Please can parents/carers ensure that when parking they do not block vehicular access to the track up to the tennis courts – thank you.

Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor)
The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year. We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.
Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher)
If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department. Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home.
