Newsletter Message from the headteacher Fourteen lessons visited this week, for one reason or another. In a PE lesson in upper school the teacher had Henry build this model to understand respiration which I thought captured the mechanics of the lungs/diaphragm really well.
I was totally fascinated in a lower school German lesson by the way the teacher impressed upon one student the importance of his book as a ‘resource’. She was highlighting the fact that the boy was unable to answer her question on verb endings because his notes were unclear. She had spoken to him about this before and so chose him to answer the question first. By the end of the discussion I felt sure that student in question had decided before the next lesson to ensure that, through the use of a highlighter and ruler, his notes would enable him to answer the questions that the teacher was likely to ask him. The most impressive thing about the encounter was that the teacher was able to exact high standards from this student without him ever forgetting that his achievement was at the centre of her mind. In other news we are currently trialling procedures to get students inside quickly in the unlikely event of a risk being presented externally on one of our sites. More about this when and if necessary. Finally, I wanted to tell a short story about an upper school student who I met on Wednesday morning. He reported as feeling unwell so the school phoned home. There was a very sensible parent on the end of the phone who agreed with us that this happened too often and that we should try to keep him in school. Initially he was very reluctant to leave the sick room but I happened to be around, so I checked with our first aider that he had no concerning symptoms (I did the obligatory hand on forehead from parental habit) and he agreed pretty quickly to trail me on my rounds. He was quite impressed at the speed with which I got from lesson to lesson: I have very long legs. By the end of the morning he said he was feeling a bit better and was prepared to give afternoon lessons a try. He made it through to the end of the day without a problem and his responses suggested that he had realised that he was a little more resilient than he previously thought. I just wanted to recognise the fortitude of this young man and thank the parent for trusting us to look after him when he said he was feeling peaky.

Newsletter Response to recent student parliament survey on introduction of blazers Over the last week or so, together with the co-director of student parliament and senior leaders, I worked through the responses to the survey which student parliament had conducted around uniform and it was agreed that I provide a response to those who had completed the survey. Firstly, I would like to thank the student parliament for raising and exploring this issue. It has provoked lively debate around our outward identity and around standards of personal presentation and that has been interesting and useful. Early in my time at Highfields a number of students mentioned that their uniform felt ‘too primary’ and that a blazer should be considered. I approached student parliament who subsequently arranged the survey which was completed by 586 students, 723 families and 95 staff. The survey suggests that a majority of families would prefer no change (51%) and that majority of staff would prefer a change (92%). Significantly, given that this survey was arranged by the student parliament, 63% of student responses preferred that uniform policy remain unchanged. We have checked and this preference applies equally in the lower years who would be most affected by a change to uniform as it does to those students in upper years. The co-director of student parliament felt that from a student parliament standpoint it was difficult to see how a project such as this could proceed against the wishes of 63% of students. With the senior team I have, therefore, decided that it is likely that a change from the status quo would be divisive and would divert energy from other key priorities. Balancing this against other arguments the senior team has therefore decided that the introduction of a blazer should not be recommended to governors at this time. The leadership of the school cannot always guarantee that student voice will be the deciding factor as in other matters we will take a wider body of opinion and evidence into account. In this instance, however, it seems reasonable to respect the preference indicated by students through the survey. I have worked in schools with and without uniform policy and have seen excellence in both. Highfields School has a uniform policy and we feel that it is as important that students follow it as it is that they follow all our other policies designed to promote a happy and inclusive learning environment. I wanted to thank a majority of respondents whose responses were constructive. A small number of comments from the family survey surprised those who read them. One response suggested that the survey represented “small minded, Brexit fascism at its worst - shame on you Highfields”. This was one of a number of responses whose tone was unnecessarily strong. Fred, co-director of student parliament, asked that in this response I should “indicate clearly that students made the survey and that we are not demonstrating ‘Brexit fascism at its worst’ but the complete opposite, we are asking for other people’s views, so surely democracy!” Please bear in mind in future surveys commissioned in this way that students will read the responses. I feel that in our current national context it is more important than ever that adults act as role models for children in listening carefully to each other’s views and offering considered and respectful opinions in response. Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Reminder: Year 9 options and parent consultation evening – Tuesday 22 January Consultation Evening The year 9 parent consultation evening takes place on Tuesday 22 January in the sports hall from 4pm-6.45pm for parent/carer appointments. Students have been given appointment cards and reminded to make appointments with subject teachers either before or after the options presentations. Options Presentations Options presentations will take place in the Wheeldon Hall at 4pm and 6pm (this is the same presentation available at two points during the evening to allow all parents/carers the opportunity to attend). Year 9 students have been given an outline of the options process during assemblies this month and received their options booklet to start to think about their subject choices. Students will bring home their assessment profiles today – please talk to your son/daughter about their options and the content of their profile. All year 9 students have received a paper copy of the Key Stage 4 curriculum booklet this week. Parents/carers have been emailed the document and a link is also available on the school website (paper copies can be made available to collect during the year 9 options evening if required – please contact Miss Carline on x364 if needed). The booklet includes details of the option process as well as descriptions of all courses available to students starting year 10 in September 2019. Seneca Learning resource Students and teachers now have free access to Seneca - a revision and homework platform making studying more fun. Seneca is an interactive way to learn official course content. Their web app covers 150+ exam board specific courses condensing what students need to know for their exams. The software is able to identify gaps in learning. For instance, when you get a question wrong, the platform will repeat the topic in different formats and their smart algorithm has proven to make students remember topics 2x faster. Newsletter Student Parliament news Student Parliament organise food bank Students in Highfields School Parliament have set up a collection point to support local food bank, Jigsaw, based in Matlock. The Jigsaw Food Bank initiative provides practical help with a purpose, taking donated goods, in particular canned and dried foods and providing support to people during a crisis. These maybe people unable to provide for themselves due to loss of income, employment or benefits. If you would like to donate food Jigsaw have provided the following list of items they need:

Newsletter School News HAC100 all female coding competition I am pleased to be able to share with you another all-female coding competition - HAC100.
"Manchester’s All Female Youth Hack is back, bringing together more than 60 young ladies aged 11 - 18, across two days to create software solutions for problems being set by Co-op Digital & Thales UK. If you are new to coding, we will have a few workshops for you to choose from to get you started. It is being held on 25 & 26 January in Manchester." Library news – Highfields Year 7 Book Award 2019 Around 30 members of the year 7 book club are avidly reading the five books on the shortlist for this year’s ‘Highfields Year 7 Book Award’. At Highfields we take part in a scheme run by the charity, Book Trust. They provide us with multiple copies of five titles that they believe will become future classics. At the year 7 book club we have decided to use these books as the shortlist for our own book award. Students will be voting for their overall favourite, which will be revealed after Easter. At the last book club meeting students voted for the one book out of these five that they think has the best cover. “The House with Chicken Legs”, a beautifully illustrated adventure story by Sophie Anderson, was the clear winner based on the cover alone. The books we will be reading over the next few weeks are: The House with Chicken Legs, by Sophie Anderson Star by Star, by Sheena Wilkinson Boy 87, by Ele Fountain A Good Day for Climbing Trees, by Jaco Jacobs Ghost Boys, by Jewell Parker Rhodes Copies of all these books are available to borrow from the Library. East Midlands Sports Leadership Academy of the Year Award On Friday 18 January Sports Leaders UK development officer, Rob Watson, is visiting Highfields to present the East Midlands Sports Leadership Academy of the Year Award – more news on this in next week’s newsletter.
Girls Active Update 2019 Girls in key stage 3 have been filling in an annual survey on activity over the past week for the Youth Sport Trust. This gives us and them insight into girls’ activity levels and the results are important for our planning.
Combat Hub School Update As well as the year 8 students taking part in wrestling and fencing coaching during Wednesday lessons, we have now secured judo coaching for year 11 core PE on Friday afternoons. PE apprentice, Mr Edenbrow, has also secured a place on a level 1 coaching award for boxing in March.

Newsletter Year 5-6 Sports Hall Athletics On Friday 11 January students from All Saints, Lea, Wessington, St Joseph’s, South Darley, Castle View and Elton primaries competed in the year 5-6 sports hall athletics event. There was a fantastic atmosphere all day as the competitors were challenged with a vertical jump, chest push, indoor javelin, speed bounce, target throw, high stepper challenge, standing long jump and triple jump on field events and on the track 1+1 relay, 2+2 relay, 4+1 relay, obstacle relay, under and over relay and a 6 lap parloff! Highfields Sports Leaders were brilliant officiating the event and a credit to the school. The winning primary schools were Lea (morning athletics) and Wessington (afternoon athletics) – well done all!

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.

Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or pastoral manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year. Subject specific enquiry (subject teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. School to home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ assessment profiles/data sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
