Newsletter Message from the headteacher Ten lessons visited this week. In a science lesson at lower site I saw a really good example of a teacher working very closely with a teaching assistant (TA). The TA knew exactly how the teacher intended him to support the target student. In addition, the TA was supporting the student to learn but was stopping short of over supporting the student so that he became less independent. In other news I have been in a lesson on particle physics (you will, of course, know that equipotential lines are lines in space which join points with the same potentials) where I came dangerously close to passing out due to mental overload. The intellect of many Highfields students and staff is quite awe inspiring. And below is how the resourceful Andrew decided to demonstrate his understanding of armour used in the Battle of Hastings in a lower school history lesson. If only Harold had held up a shield like this one he may have avoided the painful eye-based arrow encounter. As you may gather, I am very proud to be associated with Highfields School and my focus is on highlighting and reinforcing positives within the school. All staff, however, are passionate about children’s learning and are aware that last summer’s exam results strongly suggested that, despite some individual success stories, our children did not all achieve their very significant potential. Next week senior leaders will update governors on the impact of our ‘Big 3’ improvement plan. We will remind governors of our robust and relentless approach to raising standards. As a family you may experience this in a number of ways. Your child may tell you, as they did a local authority visitor recently, that ‘teachers are getting stricter’ and that ‘more work is getting done in lessons’. Or they may have noticed that if they are struggling the teacher seems to be supporting them more. Several students in year 11 will definitely have noticed that they are receiving mentoring from senior leaders because we have decided that they need it. You may be receiving more communications about attendance because we are determined that children miss as little learning time as possible. Some children will sadly have faced exclusion because we cannot improve in an environment where behaviour which undermines the learning or wellbeing of others is allowed. Finally, you may be receiving feedback about students’ personal appearance because to us a lack of care towards personal appearance is often reflected in students’ approach to their work. In all of this I remind you that our motivation is to give your children the attributes, skills and knowledge they need to thrive in a changing world. Thank you to those of you who have taken to time to indicate that you read this newsletter. A slightly austere tone this week; next week I will try to think of something more amusing to say…

Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Year 9 immunisation consent forms Earlier this week year 9 students were given letters to take home with consent forms explaining about the Meningococcal ACWY (Men ACWY) vaccine and Teenage Booster vaccine being offered to all year 9 students by the NHS immunisation team on Monday 11 March 2019. Please can you ensure consent forms are returned to school by Monday 14 January 2019 in order to allow the immunisation team sufficient time to order the vaccine. If you have not received a letter or consent form, please contact the pastoral office and speak to Miss Carline on 01629 581888 extension 364.
Year 9 options and parent consultation evening – Tuesday 22 January Consultation Evening The year 9 parent consultation evening takes place on Tuesday 22 January in the sports hall from 4pm-6.45pm for parent/carer appointments. Students will be given appointment cards during registration and reminded to make appointments with subject teachers. Options Presentations Options presentations will take place in the Wheeldon Hall at 4pm and 6pm (this is the same presentation available at two points during the evening). Year 9 students will be given an outline of the options process during assemblies in January and will receive their options booklet to start to think about their subject choices. The Key Stage 4 curriculum booklet will be issued to year 9 parents/carers electronically and uploaded to the school website (paper copies will be available to collect during the year 9 options evening following the presentation if required – please contact Miss Carline on x364 if needed). The booklet includes details of the option process as well as descriptions of all courses available to students starting year 10 in September 2019. Careers Advice Phil Nelson, the school’s Independent Careers Advisor, will be available during the year 9 evening to talk to parents/carers and students. Phil will be able to provide any guidance with option choices and future career choices. His desk will be situated in the sports hall as part of the parent consultation evening. Newsletter Student Parliament news Student Parliament survey on uniform for September 2019 Thank you to everyone who has taken time to give feedback to the Student Parliament uniform survey which closed on 7 January. We will be looking at the responses received from the school community to see whether the view of Student Parliament is shared by others. Depending on the results of the survey we will present our findings and proposal to senior leaders and governors. Many thanks Fred and Tyga Co-Directors of Student Parliament

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.

Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiries (reception) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is reception. Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or pastoral manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year. School to home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ assessment profiles/data sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
