School News Sir Geoffrey Owen visits Highfields Providing young people with the skills and knowledge that they need to be well informed and active citizens is an important challenge for all schools. Indeed, it has possibly never been more important, given the huge political shocks we have experienced in the past couple of years, and continue to live through. This was very much the theme picked up by Sir Geoffrey Owen when he came to speak to students at Highfields School on ‘From Thatcher to Corbyn’ recently. Sir Geoffrey is very well placed to make such a judgement. He has been writing about the state of the country since the 1950s, including as Deputy Editor and then Editor in Chief of the Financial Times throughout the 1970s and 80s. Despite reporting on those turbulent decades Sir Geoffrey started by saying that he could not remember a period of such uncertainty.
Whilst many of us remember the Thatcher years and then the advent of New Labour our students obviously do not. Sir Geoffrey provided them with the opportunity to build an understanding of the forces that shaped the second half of the twentieth century, and which continue to influence the world today. He took them on a whistle stop tour, covering the winter of discontent, the shift to a free market economy in the 1980s, the associated conflict with Trade Unions marked most clearly by the Miners’ strike, moving through the Blair years to the financial crisis of 2008-2009. We then arrived at the surprising events of the last few years, notably Brexit and the emergence of a socialist leader of the Labour party in the shape of Jeremy Corbyn on this side of the Atlantic, and in the shape of an unconventional tweeting President on the other. Our students listened attentively and asked some excellent questions. They wanted to know Sir Geoffrey’s predictions about Britain’s economy in the future, his views on the possible impact of Artificial Intelligence, his thoughts on how different the global economy might have been if there had not been a Communist Revolution in China in 1949 and on how he rated the chances of Jeremy Corbyn being elected Prime Minister. It was great to see such curiosity from the young people who will be the voters and decision makers of the coming decades. Thanks to Sir Geoffrey and the Speakers for Schools organisation for encouraging this.

Newsletter National Citizenship Service (NCS) The National Citizenship Service (NCS) came into our Year 11 assembly today, Friday 12 January, to introduce the NCS programme running in the summer. NCS is a Government-backed programme for students aged 16-17. The programme is made up of three parts that help young people develop leadership, teamwork and communication skills. It is a great way for young people to learn the skills for work and life they need to succeed in the future, to build confidence and meet new people, whilst having an amazing time during the school holidays. Fixtures: We are looking forward seeing our students continuing to participate and achieve in a range of sporting events locally and nationally in the New Year.
Saturday 20 January 2018: Several of our students are competing in the County Cross Country Championships at Tupton Hall from 9am – students involved have been given their start times separately.

Sports Leaders News Young Highfields Ambassador Assemblies On Monday 8 January our Young Ambassadors Evie and George from Year 9 led a Young Ambassador assembly at Lea primary school along with PE apprentice Miss Elliot. Over the next three months all 12 Highfields cluster primary schools will be visited by the Highfields team of Ambassadors.
Team Up Programme Silver Award Prize Our prize was this visit to Loughborough University on Tuesday 9 January to watch an open session with the England netball team. Students returned with a signed netball as part of their prize and a chance to see Natalie Haythornwaite (England player) again, who visited us in December. Many thanks to Mrs Wildgoose and PE Apprentice, Miss Tabbenor, for accompanying the ten Year 9 and 10 students.
Change 4 Life Conference 2018 On Wednesday 10 January PE Apprentices led workshop sessions at the Arc for the SSP primary schools Change 4 Life Conference 2018 - well done to Mr Molyneux, Miss Elliot and Miss Tabbenor.
Olympian Jo Jackson’s Visit Olympian, Jo Jackson, came in to school for her second visit on Thursday 11 January, spending the morning working with our SEN students.

Parent/Carer notices Year 11 Prom & Year Book Year 11 Prom - The Year 11 Prom will take place on Thursday 28 June 2018 at Alfreton Hall to celebrate the hard work and effort shown by our students. The cost of the evening includes a welcome drink, meal, disco and fireworks at the venue, along with transport costs to and from the venue (all students must travel by coaches provided). A photographer will also be present during the evening to capture the celebration and students will be able to purchase full colour prints on the night. Letters giving full details of the evening and associated costs have been issued to students and the consent slip is required to be returned to enable students to attend the Prom. Year Book - The Year Book team are in the process of producing a hard-backed leavers’ book containing 32 glossy, full colour pages featuring all students in Year 11, packed with memories of your child’s time here at Highfields School, along with comments from staff. The cost of the book is £13.50 and students may use their vivos as part, or full, payment. Full payment is required by Friday 2 March 2018 to enable time to print the book for the June leavers’ assembly. Details of the above will be sent electronically to parents/carers and students are aware of the deadline for payment.
Year 9 Immunisations As you may be aware, some vaccinations previously given by your GP surgery are now delivered in school through the School Age Immunisation Service (SAIS) for Derbyshire by NHS staff. We have been contacted by the Immunisation Team to confirm they will be offering vaccinations to all Year 9 students on Monday 5 February 2018 for the following:
The Meningococcal ACWY (MenACWY) vaccine – this vaccine protects against four different types of meningococcal bacteria that can cause meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). These diseases are very serious and can kill if not diagnosed early.
The Teenage Booster vaccine – this vaccine helps to protect against diphtheria, tetanus and polio. Diphtheria is a serious disease that can damage the heart and nervous system and in severe cases can kill. Tetanus is a painful disease affecting the nervous system which can lead to muscle spasms, causing breathing problems and can kill. Polio is a virus that attacks the nervous system which can cause permanent paralysis of muscles. If it affects the chest muscles or the brain, polio can kill.
Parents/Carers of students in Year 9 will receive a letter next week with further information about the vaccinations and a consent form to return by Thursday 25 January 2018.

Invitation to parents/carers of students with SEND: SEND Coffee Morning – Wednesday 7 February from 9.30-10.30am at Starkholmes We would like to invite parents/carers of SEND students to our SEND coffee morning between 9.30am and 10.30am on Wednesday 7 February at Lower School site, where we will discuss Learning Support and SEND provision. The coffee morning was originally scheduled for Tuesday 6 February, so if you have reserved this date previously in your diary, please ensure you amend the date to 7 February. Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor)
The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year. We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.
Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher)
If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department. Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
