Message from the Co-Headteachers On behalf of everyone at Highfields we would like to wish you a very happy New Year and hope that you enjoyed the festive break. We are very excited about the opportunities and challenges this new term will bring and look forward to working closely with you to support our students to be the best they can. Over the next few months there will be opportunities through Parent Consultation evenings for parents/carers to meet staff and discuss progress. We hope you are able to make the most of these opportunities and are able to attend the evening relevant to your son/daughter’s year group. School News Kids Literature Quiz On 5 December four students from Highfields School and four supporters travelled to London to take part in the UK final of the Kids’ Lit Quiz at the Barbican. Finley, Rhianna, Isobel and Amelia had already won the East Midlands round at Lady Manners School and so progressed, for the first time in the school’s history, to the UK final. The journey up to London, by minibus kindly driven by Mrs Wildgoose, was a great experience and good fun for everyone. After a very early start and a long drive we arrived at Luton Airport Parkway railway station. We stood watching the planes flying over and almost missed the train into London because of a long toilet stop! When we arrived in London we had lunch in Prêt à Manger and then had an interesting fifteenminute walk to the City of London School for Girls at the Barbican. We all found it really exciting to see some of the sights, such as the Barbican, the London Wall and some really modern architecture. The enormous buildings made us feel very small! The team did really well at the quiz and finished twelfth out of twenty schools. They were given seventy-five questions across five rounds. Each team had a buzzer and they had to race to the buzzer and the first team to buzz got to answer. However, if they gave the wrong answer they were deducted a point. As supporters we know our team knew lots of the answers but they were a bit slow on the buzzer. They should have more confidence because they know loads about books! The journey back was exciting because we accidentally caught the wrong train and ended up at Luton station rather than Luton Parkway! (Note from Mrs Robinson: sorry everyone, that was my
fault!)
Everyone really enjoyed the experience of going to London. We met lots of authors at the celebration tea party afterwards and bought signed copies of some of their books. We would all like to say thank you to Mrs Robinson and Mrs Wildgoose and a big well done to the Kids’ Lit Quiz Highfields team, reigning East Midlands champions! Written by Molly (Year 8)

Newsletter Highfields Choir take part in Derbyshire Carers Association Carol Service On 14 December Highfields Junior Choir, Senior Choir and soloists performed at the Derbyshire Carers Association Carol Service. They performed a range of Christmassy and non-Christmassy songs for carers, their loved ones, parents and dignitaries. At the end of the service, Highfields students joined 60 primary school children to perform as a massed choir which proved to be a great experience for all. The choirs were accompanied by Head of Music, Mr Rowley, and directed by myself. I was so proud of all the students; their performances were amazing, bringing many members of the audience to tears. At the end of the service the Chair of the Carers Association made a speech where she highlighted the talent that the students had displayed and invited them back next year. Carers do an incredible job throughout the year and I feel so proud that we had over one hundred children performing together to show them our support. Mrs Morris Music Teacher

Fixtures: We are looking forward seeing our students continuing to participate and achieve in a range of sporting events locally and nationally in the New Year.
10 January 2018: First team rugby fixture playing away against Thomas Rotherham College. Kick off at 2.30pm (students will be leaving school at the start of lunch).

Notices: Highfields Sports Leaders Advanced Notice Monday 8 January: Young Ambassadors from Highfields will start the Primary School assembly programme, commencing with Lea Primary School.
Tuesday 9 January: As winners of a Team Up trip, ten of our Key Stage 3 girls will be visiting Loughborough University to see the England netball team train in an open session. The girls will return with a signed England netball and the chance to catch up with England netball player Natalie Haythornthwaite, who visited Highfields last year.
Thursday 11 January: Olympic swimmer, Jo Jackson, will visit Highfields to work with our SEN Group for the Living for Sport Project.

Parent/Carer notices Show My Homework Show My Homework is now running for students in Years 7-11. electronically through the website, rather than paper planners.
All homework will be set
Parents/carers of students in Year 7 will shortly receive their login details to their personal account and Year 7 students will be shown during lessons how to access Show My Homework. Students are now able to access Show My Homework by using their school username and password to login. Parents/carers of students in Years 8-11 can access Show My Homework from the login details previously issued. There will be various opportunities for parents/carers with children at both Starkholmes and Lumsdale sites to see the benefits of this online tool first hand in specially designed parental presentations/workshops in the New Year led by Mr O’Reilly – further details to follow. In the meantime, we will be issuing login details to all parents/carers who have not yet logged in to the system at the sign in desk at parents’ consultation evenings, starting with Year 9 on Tuesday 16 January. Online Safety sessions We are working closely with the Matlock Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team and Traci Good, an Internet Safety Trainer, to plan some new online safety sessions for our students for delivery in February. In order to make the sessions as relevant as possible we would appreciate it if you could take 5 minutes to complete the attached survey. Newsletter Year 9 Option Evening / Parent Consultation – Tuesday 16 January Consultation Evening The Year 9 Parent Consultation evening takes place on Tuesday 16 January in the Sports Hall from 4pm-6.45pm for parent consultation appointments. Students will be given appointment cards during registration on Monday and reminded to make appointments with subject teachers. Options Presentations Options presentations will take place in the Wheeldon Hall at 4pm and 6pm (this is the same presentation available at two points during the evening). Year 9 students will be given an outline of the options process during assemblies in January and will receive their options booklet to start to think about their subject choices. The Key Stage 4 Curriculum Booklet will be issued electronically next week to Year 9 parents/carers and uploaded to the school website (paper copies will be available to collect during the Year 9 Options evening following the presentation if required – please contact Mr Tidmarsh if needed). The booklet includes details of the option process as well as descriptions of all courses available to students starting Year 10 in September 2018. Careers Advice Phil Nelson, the school’s Independent Careers Advisor, will be available during the Year 9 evening to talk to parents/carers and students. Phil will be able to provide any guidance with option choices and future career choices. His desk will be situated in the Sports Hall as part of the Parent Consultation Evening. Year 11 Mock Interviews – Friday 26 January 2018 All Year 11 students will be given a Mock Interview with an Employer on 26 January and will need to come prepared with their CV. We are extremely grateful to the team of local employers, Governors and parents who have volunteered their time and expertise to provide our students with this invaluable experience. If you have any questions about this, please speak to Mrs Turner, Life & Work Skills Co-ordinator.

Last week’s maths quiz answer … I have a max/min thermometer in my greenhouse. It records both the highest and the lowest temperatures reached since the time I reset it. I reset it on Sunday when the temperature was 4∘C. Overnight the temperature fell 5∘. Then during Monday, it rose by 6∘ before falling 10∘ during the night. On Tuesday it rose by 4∘ and fell by 2∘ overnight. On Wednesday morning, what were the maximum and minimum temperatures recorded?

Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor)
The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year. We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.
Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher)
If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department. Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
