Newsletter Message from the headteacher Waiting for the Christmas concert to begin an elderly lady, perhaps the grandparent of a student, approached me and asked, ‘…and who are you?’ I duly told her and as she disappeared into the melee I heard her say to her companion, ‘thank goodness for that - from the look of him I thought he might be someone important’. Nobody has to remind me that I am not important. Anyone, for example, who attended the Christmas celebration concert would be more than aware that all the important people were up on the stage. As a musician myself, I am very judgemental about students’ music making and am congenitally incapable of offering false praise. However, the standard of performance in this event was high by anybody’s standards. It’s easy enough to include a Beethoven sonata and ACDC’s Back in Black in the same programme. Ensuring that they are both interpreted with skill, taste, accuracy and judgement is another thing entirely. I cannot praise Mr Rowley and his team highly enough and was not surprised when the same standards were preserved at the annual Derbyshire Carers Association Celebration at the Crooked Spire on Thursday. In other news I have, as always, been checking in on lessons to ensure that students are meeting their teachers’ high expectations. This week I have been prioritising any cover or supply lessons to ensure that students keep learning when their substantive teacher is unwell. On my way to such a lesson I came across this creation below in which a PE class had used sports equipment to describe the human skeletal system. For some reason it reminds me of a photo of myself dancing at a disco in about 1985. Last newsletter of the term next week in which I will reveal the true meaning of Christmas according to a year 7 student overheard this week. Mr Marsh Headteacher

Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Reminder: non-uniform/Christmas jumper day Friday 21 December Our next charity fundraising event is non-uniform/Christmas jumper day on 21 December 2018 for Save the Children - students and staff will be encouraged to wear a Christmas jumper or non-uniform for the day and donate £1 to support Save the Children. Dig out your favourite Christmas jumper – fairy lights, baubles, snowmen and Christmas trees are all allowed! Donations can help pay for blankets and hats to keep a child warm, provide a hot meal, bring essential healthcare, education and protection to millions of children around the world and help save lives.
Year 11 - National Citizen Service (NCS) The National Citizen Service are coming into Highfields on Friday to give a presentation about the nationwide summer experience of NCS. NCS will presented to all year 11 students about what this opportunity holds for them if they take part over the summer, including gaining employability skills, learning new skills such as first aid and gaining new experiences during their adventure week. Newsletter Student Parliament news We (Eve and Sammy) would like to introduce ourselves as the new chairs of the Student Parliament. We are both excited to undertake this role and take on new responsibilities within the school community. So far, we have attended several meetings to gather an understanding of what students in year 7 to year 13 want as priorities for us to focus on pursuing this academic year. One of our aims is to introduce a food bank donation point which would be donated to Jigsaw, a local food bank. We want to help charities within our local area and are hoping that this will benefit members of our wider community. We hope to introduce this after Christmas at both lower and upper sites. Keep your eyes open for information about items we need donating as well as when the donation points are open. We are also talking to the canteen about the possibility of introducing items such as grab bags at upper site, as well as having more gluten free and vegan friendly food throughout school. This was what was suggested by both sites as we have a lot of students who are very healthy and environmentally cautious! Furthermore, we want to look at utilising the school garden at upper site. If anyone has any ideas about how we could do this or could help us in our quest to have a calm and organised space for students to use, we would be more than grateful. Lastly, we think that as a school community we could do more to recycle and reuse as much waste as possible. We hope to promote this and encourage students to use the recycling bins more, as well as reusing bottles for water rather than causing more plastic waste going into the world. We want to protect the environment for future generations, and this begins with us! Newsletter Student Parliament survey on uniform for September 2019 - What do you think? Student, staff and family surveys, along with community feedback all suggest that our uniform could be smarter. Many students say that current school uniform is not appropriate for a secondary school and that a blazer would be preferred. At a Student Parliament meeting on 26 November an extraordinary committee voted unanimously that a uniform change should be considered to make uniform more consistent and less 'primary school' in appearance. The committee decided to propose that a 'different' blazer (not black or blue like local schools) be introduced and chose to propose a choice of two (grey and maroon red) because they reflect the school's colour scheme. The average annual cost of a uniform would increase only by around ÂŁ3. Black trousers/skirts would remain, but more care would be taken to be clear about which types/lengths of skirt are appropriate. We are now surveying the school community to see whether Student Parliament view is shared by others. Depending on the findings of the survey we would then present our findings and proposal to senior leaders and governors. Sports leaders notice board: Monday 17 December – PE apprentice training PE apprentices, Miss Tabbenor, Mr Hill and Mr Edenbrow will be attending SEN all inclusive sports training in Cannock. This is a part of the Youth Sport Trust project we are engaged in during 2018/19.
Friday 21 December – Voice of Sport Voice of Sport meeting will take place at 1pm in the meeting room at Lumsdale.

Newsletter Sports leadership events PE specialism day On Friday 7 December PE apprentice, Mr Molyneux, took part in the level 5 PE specialism day 2 with the focus of the unit being on the primary PE curriculum. At lunch time Mr Molyneux ran the year 7 sports leaders club who were practicing skills required for the upcoming key stage 1 ball skills event in January 2019.
Sports hall athletics Sports leaders from Highfields Academy took part in an official’s award for sports hall athletics on Thursday 13 December, delivered by Mike Frost from England Athletics. Our young officials will put their training into practice at the years 5 & 6 sports hall athletics competition to be held on Friday 11 January and Wednesday 7 February 2019 as Highfields will be hosting the Rural Derbyshire SSP finals for years 5 & 6 .

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.

School to home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ assessment profiles/data sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
