Message from the Co-Headteachers We are coming to the end of a very busy, happy and successful term. As we come towards the festive break we would like to thank you for all your support and reflect on all the activity that has taken place in school over the past 14 weeks. Recent highlights have included:
A huge array of spectacular Drama and Music activity including a trip to London to visit Harry Potter World and take part in a Matilda workshop led by an RSC professional, a Year 8 theatre trip to see Scrooge, and our choirs performing at the Carers’ Association Carol Concert at the Crooked Spire in Chesterfield. We have the mini musical Annie and an Evening of Theatre to look forward to in the new year.
Lots of opportunities for students to participate in and lead others’ participation in sporting fixtures and events, through our sports teams, practices and sports leaders programme, culminating in our Year 11 Futsal team competing County Finals at Derby University last week.
Sixth Form students showing great community festive spirt by helping out with Christmas lunches and parties at various lunch clubs, sheltered housing venues and residential care homes. For many this has been part of a wider programme of volunteering that has been taking place since the start of term through which our students have made a real difference to the lives of others in the community.
A huge range of initiatives and events organised by our Libraries to promote literacy and a love of reading. Most recently this has included author visits, outstanding success in the East Midlands Kids Lit Quiz and the launch of the Year 9 Reading Challenge. We are delighted to welcome author Lucy Adlington as our Reading Patron and look forward to other exciting initiatives to further foster a love of reading across all students at school.
Computer Science students have been involved in the Bebras computational thinking challenge. Certificates and invitations to the students that have gained places on the TCS programming challenge will be given out in the new year.
An incredibly wide spectrum of lunchtime and after school clubs, many of which have been initiated by students themselves. This includes the re-birth and reinvigoration of our Warhammer Club; a team of Sixth Form students have taken part in the Games Workshop National League for the first time whilst younger enthusiasts have done a fantastic job painting their first models. Year 8 students are working hard in the Technology and Engineering Club designing a pneumatic robot that will compete in battle at the end of the project.
We have also welcomed some younger students to a Morning Club (aka breakfast club!) at Lower Site. If any parents/carers are interested in their child joining this club, please contact Mrs Weightman-Edge for more details.
Such activities contribute hugely to our ethos as an inclusive, happy and inspirational community built on mutual respect and trust. We recently took the opportunity to speak to students in assemblies about the importance of such values and to thank the vast majority of students for consistently upholding them through their positive relationships with each other and with staff. We continue to see our collective commitment to these principles as a cornerstone of our success as a school. Thanks as ever for all your support this term. School News Scrooge On Wednesday 6 December Year 8 students enjoyed a trip to the theatre! 142 Year 8s and 10 staff attended Leicester Curve for the matinee of ‘Scrooge’. One student commented ‘it was truly magical!’, another said ‘I’ve never been to the theatre before and I can’t wait to go again!’.
All students behaved impeccably and Miss Bonsall and the rest of the staff received lots of positive comments from the general public on how great their theatre etiquette was and how lovely the students were! What a wonderful Christmas experience!

Highfields School Newsletter The Reading Show – Inspiring Year 7 Students
Award-winning children’s authors Alan Gibbons and Andy Seed entertained and inspired Year 7 students last week with “The Reading Show”. Their performance featured sketches, book recommendations, poems, interviews, jokes, riddles – and even a world-record attempt – all with the aim of encouraging the students to read books for pleasure. Through The Reading Show authors Alan and Andy, who have both won the coveted Blue Peter Book Award, introduced Year 7 students to an exciting range of stories and non-fiction in a way that captured the interest of even the most reluctant readers. It was interactive, fast, fun and inspiring. Both Alan and Andy are passionate about the benefits of reading. “A reading child is a successful child. Every bit of evidence, from UN reports to university studies, shows that youngsters who read for pleasure do better in school than those who don’t, have more self-esteem, show more empathy, and turn into pretty confident adults,” said Alan Gibbons. “That’s why Andy and I travel the country spreading the message: reading does you good!” Students also enjoyed the opportunity to buy books signed by the authors. “Since the show books by Andy and Alan and ones they recommended have been very popular in the library and we’ve got a long waiting list for many of them,” said librarian, Mrs Robinson. “The authors clearly made a big impression on the Year 7 students! We would like to thank the Ernest Bailey Trust, whose financial support helped fund “The Reading Show” at Highfields. The Reading Show is part of the school’s wide range of activities and programmes aimed at fostering a love of reading for pleasure in students of all ages and abilities.

Sports Update
Mr Shirtcliffe (Head of PE)
Fixtures: We are looking forward seeing our students continuing to participate and achieve in a range of sporting events locally and nationally in the New Year. 10 January 2018 First team rugby fixture playing away against Thomas Rotherham College (leaving school at lunch time).
Results – Year 11 Futsal Our Year 11 boys futsal team travelled to The University of Derby for the County finals on Thursday. They played some excellent football and progressed to the semi-final winning 2 out of 3 games. Unfortunately, we came up against a very strong side and having taken the lead we conceded 2 late goals to get knocked out at the semi-final stage. Well done boys!

Sports Leaders News Youth Sport Trust Quality Assurance On Thursday 7 December the Youth Sport Trust’s Quality Assurance Team visited Highfields. The Team will return in the New Year to observe a lesson and discuss our Quality Mark Award with the CoHeadteachers and Mr Shirtcliffe, Head of PE. This will then complete the process and we will receive the outcome of their findings and see what we are awarded.
Jo Jackson, Olympic Swimmer at Highfields Jo Jackson will return to visit Highfields in January 2018 to work with our SEN students.
Team Up Project We have been awarded a visit to Loughborough University on Tuesday 9 January to see the England netball team practice in an open session. Mrs Wildgoose will attend with a group of ten Highfields netballers. We have hit the 200 mark for the Team Up points, achieved a Silver Award and entered into a prize draw to see England v Australia on 22 January at the Copperbox in London.
Active in Health Project We have a visit from ex-professional tennis player, Jade Windley, on Wednesday 28 February to look forward to. Jade will be working with a group of 25 Year 7 students who have been selected using the Youth Sport Trust selection process during November.

Parent/Carer notices Show My Homework New Year launch Following our initial trial of Show My Homework during the Summer term last year, we would like to inform parents/carers that we are launching Show My Homework for Years 7-11 on 4 January 2018. From the New Year, all homework will be set electronically through the website, rather than paper planners. Show My Homework is an online tool to help you keep track of your child’s homework. Parents/carers will be able to see the details of the tasks your child has been set, all their deadlines and their submission status and grades. We have decided to bring in this system to improve the way we communicate with parents/carers and provide greater transparency with homework we set, to promote parent/carer engagement in learning. Parents/carers of students in Year 7 will be provided with login details to their personal account. Year 7 students will receive their login details at school. Parents/carers of students in Years 8-11 can access Show My Homework from the login details previously issued. Parent/carer personal accounts are linked to their child’s homework calendar to enable them to see their child’s To-do List and any homework that is overdue. Key features are: ● ● ● ●
24/7 access View quality and quantity of homework Apps available for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Android devices via Google Play and Apple App store Receive automated notifications before homework is due
We hope that this service will provide parents/carers with a deeper insight into the homework their children receive. More importantly, we hope that it will improve students’ organisation and timemanagement skills and help them to keep on top of their workload. Once parents/carers receive their login details, notifications will be sent providing details of homework set. Parents/carers will also be notified of grades, overdue homework and announcements. At start of 2018 there will be various opportunities for parents/carers with children at both Starkholmes and Lumsdale sites to see the benefits of this online tool first hand in specially designed parental presentations/workshops led by Mr O’Reilly – further details to follow. Newsletter Advance Notice: Sixth Form NYC Trip meeting – Monday 11 January There is a parent/carer meeting taking place on 11 January 2018 at 6.30pm in P1 at Lumsdale to provide further information to parents/carers of students participating in the NYC Trip.
Year 9 Option Evening / Parent Consultation – Tuesday 16 January Consultation Evening The Year 9 Parent Consultation evening takes place from 4pm-6.45pm for parent consultation appointments in the Sports Hall. Students will be reminded during assembly in the first week back to make appointments with subject teachers. Appointment slips will be available from the Pastoral Office. Options Presentations Options presentations will take place in the Wheeldon Hall at 4pm and 6pm (this is the same presentation available at two points during the evening). Year 9 students will be given an outline of the options process during assemblies in the New Year and will receive their options booklet to start to think about their subject choices. The Key Stage 4 Curriculum Booklet will be issued electronically to Year 9 parents/carers and uploaded to the school website in the New Year (paper copies will be available to collect during the Y9 Options evening following the presentation if required). The booklet includes details of the option process as well as descriptions of all courses available to students starting Year 10 in September 2018. Careers Advice Phil Nelson, the school’s Independent Careers Advisor, will be available during the Year 9 evening to talk to parents/carers and students. Phil will be able to provide any guidance with option choices and future career choices. His desk will be situated in the Sports Hall as part of the Parent Consultation Evening. Year 11 Mock Interviews – Friday 26 January 2018 All Year 11 students will be given a Mock Interview with an Employer on 26 January and will need to come prepared with their CV. If you have any questions about this, please speak to Mrs Turner, Life & Work Skills Co-ordinator.

Maths Puzzle Zone This week’s maths quiz is …
I have a max/min thermometer in my greenhouse. It records both the highest and the lowest temperatures reached since the time I reset it. I reset it on Sunday when the temperature was 4∘C. Overnight the temperature fell 5∘. Then during Monday it rose by 6∘ before falling 10∘ during the night. On Tuesday it rose by 4∘ and fell by 2∘ overnight. On Wednesday morning, what were the maximum and minimum temperatures recorded?

Last week’s maths quiz answer … Tick's watch runs 2 minutes per hour too slow. Tock's watch runs 1 minute per hour too fast. They set them to the same time at noon on Sunday. The next time they met, one of the watches was one hour ahead of the other. What was the earliest time this could have been?
Solution: Each hour, Tock's watch gains three minutes on Tick's watch. It will, therefore, take 20 hours before it is one hour ahead of it.

Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor)
The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year. We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.
Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher)
If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department. Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
