School News Highfields students on the trip of a lifetime Highfields students were lucky enough to experience an inspiring and engaging trip to London this week. On Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 November, 30 students from Years 8, 9 and 10 were in London taking in part in many fun, drama and theatre related activities. Students were invited on the trip as a reward for the hard work they put into last year’s Mini Musical (Matilda), the Evening of Theatre and the school production of Little Shop of Horrors. Whilst away they took part in a Matilda workshop led by a Royal Shakespeare Company professional. This allowed students to explore their characterisation and storytelling skills. The students watched the ‘Matilda’ matinee at the Cambridge Theatre after a 3 course meal at Pizza Express. Whilst in the Covent Garden area, students performed an impromptu performance of their version of ‘School Song’ from Matilda the Musical. Over 100 people stopped to watch and enjoy the performance! Students were also lucky enough to see an evening performance of Wicked. They described this as mesmerising and visually sensational! Their jaws were nearly at the floor for the whole two and a half hours! Students had the opportunity to dine at the Hard Rock Café - the Legendary Burger was a particular favourite! Harry Potter World was another highlight of the trip where students explored behind the scenes of the making of Harry Potter films. They explored parts of the set and were able to have a go at

Newsletter performing in front of a green screen and riding a broom stick! During the tour students saw Harry’s house, the special effects department and a 1:24 scale model of Hogwarts.
Miss Bonsall who led the trip, said: “The students were superbly behaved and very energetic for the whole trip! They enjoyed a sleepover with their friends at the Royal National Hotel (Russell Square) and an all- you-can-eat hot breakfast, too! They were a delight to take away and I was very proud of their theatre etiquette whilst watching the shows, as well as their dedicated hard work in the workshop!”

Newsletter Year 7 students are buzzing about books Christmas came early for Year 7 students last week at Highfields when every student received a present of a book. We participate in a scheme called “Book Buzz”, run by the Book Trust, a national charity that promotes reading for pleasure. Back in September every Year 7 student viewed a range of twelve different children’s books and chose one that they would like to receive a free copy of. The students have been waiting in anticipation for the books to arrive and were very excited finally to be presented with their “books to keep” last week.
The students really enjoyed the selection process and for many it was the first time they had chosen a book of their own. It led to a great deal of conversation about books and a surge of interest in reading. The feedback from students has been extremely positive. “When I got my book I was so happy and I’m thinking of getting the other books in the series. I enjoyed it so much,” commented one student. “I think getting my book was awesome and I love reading it!” said another. In a recent survey of the reading habits of our Year 7 students we found that one in five has never visited a bookshop and 12% of students have never visited a library. Independent studies show us time and again that reading can transform a child’s future. We believe that taking part in the Book Buzz scheme helps many of our students take an important step towards developing a life-long love of books.

Newsletter The Secret Countess comes to the library The next book from Highfields’ Patron of Reading Lucy Adlington has arrived in the school library. Lucy is kindly donating brand new copies of her favourite books from when she was a teenager. These are the books that inspired her to become an author. The latest book to arrive is ‘The Secret Countess’ by Eva Ibbotson. Lucy first discovered Eva Ibbotson’s books when she was in a charity shop and came across a book called ‘A Company of Swans’. Lucy loves all of Eva Ibbotson’s books, but her favourite one is ‘A Secret Countess’. At the time Lucy was a teenager this book was called ’A Countess Below Stairs’ and it was marketed as adult fiction, in the days before there was a such a thing as the genre we now know as teenage fiction. ‘A Secret Countess’ is a historical drama set during the Russian Revolution. ‘A Company of Swans’, ‘A Secret Countess’ and other books by Eva Ibbotson are available for loan from the libraries at both Starkholmes and Lumsdale.

Mental Health Anti-stigma Ambassador Training Recently Mrs Weightman-Edge and Mr Briddon from the Highfields Inclusion Team had the pleasure of taking four students to the David Nieper Academy in Alfreton for Mental Health Anti-stigma Ambassador training. The aim of the course, which involved several other schools, was to train students who can then raise awareness of mental health issues within their respective schools. This will then help to create a school environment where it is safe and comfortable to talk about mental health thus enhancing the wellbeing of everyone. The students were Georgina (Year 7), Maisie (Year 8), Max (Year 8) and Holly (Year 9). Both Mrs Weightman-Edge and Mr Briddon were very proud of the conduct of our students as they worked hard and stayed focussed throughout the day. They were outstanding and represented Highfields School in a mature and positive manner and were a credit to the school.

Sports Leaders News Tree Tops Nursery visit On Friday 24 November, Play Unified ambassadors and PE apprentices visited Tree Tops Nursery to inspire the young 2- 3 year olds.
Tag Rugby The Tag Rugby SSP finals scheduled for Wednesday 29 November were postponed due to waterlogged pitches at Lady manners.
PE Apprentices Highfields said a farewell to Mr Savage on completion of his level 3 apprenticeship at Highfields after two and half years. We wish him well in his next career move and football journey. Mrs Allen visited PE Apprentice, Miss Spencer, at Kirk Ireton on Wednesday.
TeamUp England On Monday 27 November, TeamUp England announced that Mrs Allen had been selected to be a Team Up England Ambassador – one of only 15 across the UK. TeamUp website news: Fifteen inspirational and influential teachers from across the country have been announced as official TeamUp Ambassadors, recognising their outstanding dedication to delivering sport to girls in schools. TeamUp, a three-year initiative developed by the England & Wales Cricket Board, England Hockey and England Netball, is designed to maximise the legacy of three consecutive home women’s World Cups from 2017-2019, and give thousands of 7-13-year-old girls across the country the chance to play team sports. Each ambassador will become the face of TeamUp, using social media to spread the news about the initiative and introducing TeamUp to colleagues, peers and parents, to ensure school girls experience the benefits of team sport. They will also encourage pupils in their schools to become ‘TeamUp Champions’ to help engage their peers in team sport. The fifteen ambassadors will be rewarded with a range of great prizes based on the number of schools they encourage to take part in the TeamUp initiative, including sports kit, match tickets,

Newsletter signed women’s cricket World Cup shirt and a chance to win a pair of tickets to the sold-out Hockey World Cup Final 2018. With the help of the new ambassadors, the TeamUp initiative hopes to have a long-term effect on the delivery of school sport. The gender gap in participation between girls and boys begins in the later years of primary school and continues to widen in secondary school. Marked gender differences are noted in school sport with 11-15-year-old girls less likely to play for a school team, be a member of a sports club, play sport against others in PE lessons or take part in a competition than boys of the same age. One solution to this is support teachers to provide quality opportunities to young girls in school. TeamUp wants to reward those already doing great things to make a difference and provide support to all schools. The TeamUp Ambassadors were officially announced on Monday 27th November. Newsletter Careers Conferences for students who want to become Doctors or Lawyers Epoc Careers organises good quality careers events for students. Epoc Careers are now taking bookings for: Improve Your Chances of Becoming a Doctor - Saturday 3 February 2018 and Improve Your Chances of Becoming a Lawyer - Sunday 4 February 2018 These one-day careers conferences run from 10:00am to 4:30pm, at UCL, in London. Students travel to them from all over the country. Epoc Careers give students the information they need on BMAT and UKCAT (for medicine) and LNAT (for law). They also give students a good understanding of university admissions processes and criteria, interviews, career options and many other issues. The careers conferences are principally designed for students in Years 11 and 12. Year 10 students, staff and parents also attend, and find the events useful and enjoyable. Maths quiz answer … Jasmine and Kamal have been asked to work out 5748 + 893 and 5748 – 893. Jasmine says, ‘893 is 7 less than 900, and 900 is 100 less than 1000, so I can work out the addition by adding on 1000 and then taking away 100 and then taking away 7.’ What answer does Jasmine get, and is she correct? Kamal says, ‘893 is 7 less than 900, and 900 is 100 less than 1000, so I can work out the subtraction by taking away 1000 and then taking away 100 and then taking away 7.’ What answer does Kamal get, and is he correct? If you disagree with either Jasmine or Kamal, can you correct their reasoning?
Solution: Jasmine is correct. Kamal is wrong. He has actually taken away 1107 instead of 983. He needed to take away 1000, then add 100, then add 7 to make sure he has only subtracted 983.

Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor)
The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year. We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.
Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher)
If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department. Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
