Newsletter Message from the headteacher I’d like to thank a few parents/carers who have taken a moment to email me with small, but important acknowledgements of any recent successes the leadership of the school is having in further raising standards for our children. I fully expect to be criticised and complained to when things go wrong, but the odd bit of encouragement really boosts school leaders and further increases their resolve to make a difference to the lives of the young people in our care. As usual with regards to lessons I have been in and out like a fiddler’s elbow. A big focus for teachers at the moment is actionable feedback. This means that they offer feedback which stimulates a response from the student. Usually this feedback is in the form of a small task which the student completes to show they have understood where they went wrong. In lots of cases in books I have seen this week the feedback is there (in green ink usually) but the response (usually in purple) is less evident. This will be an ongoing area of interest for me because life for me is all about learning from mistakes and doing things a little better each time you try them. Restorative practice was featured on the car radio this week as I shuttled between sites. I love to use restorative approaches to sort out conflicts and repair relationships. This week I chose the technique to deal with a couple of students who had had a fall out in a lesson. It feels valuable to try and show young people a strategy for restore friendships when things go wrong. I enjoyed the meeting anyway… and it reminded me of how brilliant Highfields students can be when they are focused on looking for solutions.

Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Polite request – dropping off and collecting students It has been reported that a child walking across the car park to their parent/carer had a near miss with another parent/carer’s car recently at Starkholmes. We would like to remind all parents/carers that students should be dropped off and collected outside of the school sites in the mornings and at the end of the school day. Parents/carers should not enter or park in the school car park allocated for staff and visitors or bus bays allocated for school transport unless they have been given express permission from school. If parents/carers require access to the school site based on physical need, please write to the appropriate member of staff below to request permission:

Newsletter Parent governor vacancy Don’t forget, if you are interested in becoming a parent governor at Highfields, our Clerk to Governors, Lex Crossett would love to hear from you. A letter was sent home last Monday which outlined what is involved. Governors are tasked with three core functions: ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its students, and the performance management of staff overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent. We would particularly welcome interest from parents/carers who have previous experience of governance (in education or elsewhere), finance, project management or the law. The deadline for expressions of interest has been extended to Monday 26 November 2018. If you are interested, please contact Lex Crossett, Clerk to Governors via email. Year 9 PSHE lessons on gang and knife crime With gang and knife crime on the increase year upon year we wanted to let you know that Chesterfield College are currently delivering workshops to our year 9 students. The session aims to educate the students about the dangers of being in gangs, prison sentences young people face if caught carrying knives and the life changing effect gang and knife crime can have on an individual.
Year 10 and Y12 parents/carers – data collection update Year 10 and 12 data collection sheets have been issued this week along with student profiles. Please could parents/carers check the data school holds, amend if necessary, and return to the relevant pastoral office to ensure the most accurate information is available on your child. For examination purposes, it is very important that the student’s name corresponds with the name given on the birth certificate because universities and major employers will verify results issued by the examination boards against the name given on the birth certificate.
Sixth form open evening survey We would appreciate feedback from anyone who attended our sixth form open evening on Monday 12 November. A link to the survey has been emailed to year 11 parents/carers and external attendees who left a contact email address. Newsletter Reminder: school emergency closure procedure We have now reached the time of year when we alert you to the steps we take if we are forced to close the school in an emergency, ie due to extreme weather conditions or equipment failures associated with the change in the weather. We should stress at the outset that this is something we only do with great reluctance, but our overriding concern is the health and safety of our students and sometimes such action is unavoidable. Snow – During School Hours: If there is a heavy snowfall during the day while students are already in school, and it becomes clear that getting home at the normal time may be difficult or dangerous, we may decide to close early. If we do close, the following instructions are given to students before they are allowed to leave the premises: •
If students know for sure that they have a safe destination with someone to look after them (such as their own home or a relative, neighbour or friend’s home) and provided they are sure they can reach this destination, they may leave when asked to do so.
•
If students are uncertain whether there is someone at home, they need to check before departure and should telephone to make sure of their arrangements. The school will make its telephones available free of charge to those who do not have a mobile phone, but obviously this may delay departure as we only have three external lines. Students should only leave once they are certain of their arrangements.
It would be helpful if you can discuss at home what you want your son/daughter to do in the event of school closing early so that they know of arrangements in advance. If students cannot make arrangements and are not sure what to do and where to go, they must remain in school in the care of the staff of the school until suitable arrangements have been made. A member of staff will always remain in school with students until everyone has been collected. Snow – Overnight: In the event of heavy snow overnight we would ask parents/carers to use their discretion in deciding if it is safe for their child to set off for school. Emergency closures happen perhaps once or twice a year. The school will inform you of closure as soon as the decision is made to close the school, by various means: the school website; BBC Radio Derby or Peak FM and by text and/or email. Once students have been sent home, students and parents/carers should listen to local radio or check our website for further instructions about our plans for the following day. This information is usually posted on the school website by 7.30am each morning. Breakdown of Equipment: If, as happens very occasionally, we suffer a complete breakdown of equipment, depriving the school of its basic services, such as electricity or water, we may be forced to send students home for their own safety. The same procedure will be followed as for a snow closure.

Scholastic Book Fair (Lumsdale) Friday 23 November to Thursday 29 November 2018 A Scholastic Book Fair will be held at Lumsdale next week. This is a ‘pop-up bookshop’ and is an excellent opportunity for students at Lumsdale to buy popular children’s and young adults’ books (sometimes at discounted prices), whilst raising money for the school library at the same time. For every £1 students and staff spend at the Book Fair, our school will earn 25p in Scholastic Rewards, which will be spent on new books for the school library. The Book Fair will be held in the entrance to Lumsdale and will be open every day next week at breaks and lunchtimes - prices start from as little as £2.99. Students who would like to purchase books from the Book Fair will need to bring cash into school on the above dates or purchase gift vouchers in advance online. Newsletter School News Highfields entertains for Children in Need On Thursday 22 November Highfields School held a new event 'Children
in Need - Highfields Entertains'.
The night included quizzes, games, fun, performances (from students and staff!) and much more … all in the name of Children in Need, an incredible charity, and one so very close to my heart. My cousin, Rachel, suffered from Niemann Pick Disease, a rare disease that receives little fundraising support. Children in Need part fund clinic nurses to visit these children, who have life expectancy of mid 20s and suffer from dementia. It is a rare inherited neurodegenerative disease that affects infants. The age of onset and rate of disease progression can vary greatly from one child to another. For example, some children develop neurological symptoms early in childhood, whereas others remain symptom free for a number of years. Rachel died aged 11 after being supported by Children in Need funding. There were many highlights of the evening, which saw us raise £250 for charity. It was a variety affair of family fun. Mr O'Reilly and Mr Rowley ran a Pop master style quiz, whilst Mr Crawford hosted a film quiz. Sam and Daisy sang with their guitars too. Teachers battled against sixth formers in the Bush Tucker trial Mr Warrington had to drink green slime and Mr Johnston sang with his ukulele. The evening also brought fun in the shape of Strictly Come Dancing. Three pairings (all school teaching and support staff) danced in competition in the name of this great cause. Mr Flett and Mrs Bumby strutted their stuff to 'Human' by Rag and Bone man whilst Mrs Brown and Mr Moss Paso Dobled to ‘Eye of the Tiger’. The winners, with their classy Charleston, was Mr Thoday and Miss Morley, all decided by our very strict judges - Mr 'Craig Revel Horwood' Rodgers, Miss 'Darcey Bussell' Wright and Mrs 'Bruno' Petch! Although very entertaining, the funniest moment of the night had to be when the year 13 drama boys dressed up as the Spice Girls in their lip sync battle against year 13 girls performing to ‘Respect’. The grande finale was 'This is Me' from The Greatest Showman, performed by upper school musical theatre club; a very fitting song for the evening. There was not a dry eye in the house as the truly emotional videos, reminding us of why this is such a great cause, were dispersed between the fun. Thank you to all students, staff, parents/carers and friends who supported this event. It was an un-ticketed night of fun, with all of your donations going to this great charity. During the week we also had other events taking place in school, at lower school form reps organised activities

Newsletter from Tuesday onwards that included nerf targets, sponge throwing and guess the name of the teddy. Cake sales, hot chocolate at break, deal or no deal, treasure hunt, face glitter to name a few activities all took place around school with the culmination of events on Friday with students paying ÂŁ1 to wear non-uniform or onesies for lower site and heroes and villains themed fancy dress at upper site. We are very proud of the students who arranged and resourced the activities, everyone who supported the event and the enthusiasm of the staff that allowed it all to happen. Newsletter Blood Brothers drama trip On Wednesday 14 November GCSE drama students from years 10 and 11 had the opportunity to see Blood Brothers at Chesterfield Winding Wheel. All 56 students had a wonderful time and said not only did they enjoy the play, but they found it helpful to see their set text for the written exam, that some of them will be completing this summer. Blood Brothers is a classic musical that has gained real status in the theatre industry. Set in Liverpool, it is a warm musical with northern roots and a heart-breaking story as a mother gives up one of her twins due to financial restraint. Holly said: 'I thought it was amazing but even though I knew it was coming, I wasn't ready for the gun shot at the end!' Jess said 'I thought Mrs Johnstone was a great singer. It was such a good show!'

Newsletter Library news Derbyshire Schools’ Book Awards 2019 Members of books clubs at both lower and upper school are avidly reading the six books on the shortlist for this year’s Derbyshire Schools’ Book Awards, a county-wide award scheme that schools across the region participate in. For the next few weeks around 20 students across years 8, 9 and 10 will be reading some of the best books published for young people in the last eighteen months, including:
The Red Ribbon, by Lucy Adlington The Infinite Lives of Maisie Day, by Christopher Edge The Extinction Trials, by S M Wilson Sky Thieves, by Dan Walker Shell, by Paula Rawsthorne Embassy of the Dead, by Will Mabbitt
All these books can be borrowed at both of the school’s libraries. Students will vote for their favourite title in the new year and the winning book will be revealed and celebrated at a special Derbyshire Schools’ Book Awards event to be held at Derby University in February. Any year 8, 9 or 10 student or member of staff who would like to take part in the book awards should come to see either Mrs Robinson in Lower School Library or Mrs Walker at Upper School Library.

Sports leadership events Primary Schools Health Fest Day On Friday 16 November Primary Schools Health Fest Day took place attended by 150 students from years 4-6 from All Saints, Darley Dale, Elton, Tansley and Lea primaries – what an awesome event! Many thanks go to Sainsburys for supporting the event and to Michelle for her smoothies; to Kim Robinson of KR Dance for the excellent Zumba sessions, PE apprentices Mr Edenbrow and Mr Hill for the circuits and Mr Molyneux and Miss Tabbenor for the smoothie bike activity. The Highfields Sports Leadership Academy students from year 9 were fabulous, supporting each activity, running the rest station and healthy living.

Derbyshire Schools Sports Awards Evening On Thursday 22 November the Derbyshire Schools Sports Awards evening was held at The Winding Wheel in Chesterfield. We are very proud of Alisha (year 12) who won the Derbyshire Schools Sport Young Leader of the Year awards – well done!

Students who are interested in representing the School please sign your name, year and form on the sign-up sheet on the PE notice boards located at both Lumsdale and Starkholmes sites. Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.
