School News Highfields students compete in the Games Workshop School League Mr Crawford
A team of four Sixth Form students, who regularly attend Warhammer Club, took part in Games Workshop's regional 'School League' tournament on Sunday 19 November. Warhammer is a hobby that involves painting miniatures and playing a strategic tabletop game, and students were encouraged to show off their skills in both of these areas, with points awarded for gameplay and painting skills. Despite putting up a good fight, Highfields were beaten by Netherthorpe School. However, John a member of Highfields' team - won an individual 'Best Painted Army' award that was voted for by all of the students that took part. John, Mark, Harvey and Samuel will get another chance to progress to the next round, when the team takes part in the second heats in February. If students would like to join Warhammer Club and take part in future events, see Mr Crawford for more information.
Year 7 Book Club enjoys a night at the theatre Mrs Robinson
A party of twenty-eight members of Year 7 Book Club recently visited Nottingham’s Theatre Royal to watch “Awful Auntie”, a stage version of the book of the same title by best-selling children’s author, David Walliams. The show was a huge hit with the students and many expressed how much they had enjoyed the evening, with comments such as “it was amazing”, “absolutely fantastic” and “I didn’t want it to end!” “For some students this was the first time that they had ever watched live theatre,” explained lower school librarian, Mrs Robinson. “Their behaviour was faultless. They were thrilled by the whole experience and it was a delight to witness their enjoyment.” Year 7 and Year 8 Book Clubs meet on alternate Fridays at 1.15pm in the Library at Lower School. At Upper School Year 10 and Year 11 Book Clubs meet on alternate Thursdays at 1.15pm in Upper School Library. New members in all groups are always welcome.

Newsletter Lumsdale Library Mrs Brown
Highfields students have been taking part in a Reading Hackers popcorn session. As part of the national Reading Hack programme, Highfields students interviewed author M A Bennett on her latest novel S.T.A.G.S. and made popcorn at the same time - good for multi-tasking skills! After reading the novel, students came up with interesting and thoughtful questions and the author provided just the answers the students were looking for ‌ yes, there will be a follow-on book, two even ‌ and yes, there might well be a film of the book. There is also a copy of S.T.A.G.S available for loan from the school library.

Newsletter Children in Need Last Friday students and staff across both school sites raised money for Children in Need by wearing non-uniform or onesies, selling cakes, cookies and popcorn, face painting, nail painting, rock band performances and sponge throwing, to name a few of the activities taking place. We are proud to announce that we have collected ÂŁ963.79 from Starkholmes and ÂŁ902.27 from Lumsdale, making an incredible grand total of ÂŁ1,866.06 for Children in Need. We are very proud of our students - a big thank you to everyone for taking part.

Sports Update

Fixtures:
No fixtures week commencing 27 November
Results: Boys Futsal Team On Wednesday 22 November our Year 9 and Year 11 boys futsal teams played in the Derbyshire Dales Championships. Our Year 9 boys played well and won one, lost one, but ended up second. The Year 11 team won both their games winning the competition and proceeding to the Derbyshire futsal finals to be held on the 14 December - well done to both teams!
Year 7 Football The Year 7 boys football team played Belper away on 23 November. They started a little slow and conceded early on, then picked up the pace and created some excellent chances. We then conceded against the run of play. The boys stuck at it and showed resilience and were rewarded by an excelled 30-yard strike from Leighton. We lost 2-1 in the end but the boys, as ever, were a real credit to the school - well done!

Sports Leaders News Primary School Health Fest On Friday 17 November the first ever Primary School Health Fest took place in the Sports Hall for our cluster primary school students. This event is part of the Lead Hub School Programme for the Youth Sport Trust - Highfields have been the lead school for Derbyshire Health and Well Being for the last three years. The event was supported by Councillor Hart, Kim Robinson and Sainsburys. Urban Smoothie bikes from London hired a smoothie bike for the day for us to use too. The Highfields Health Ambassadors were on duty supporting the event and leading workshops. Jayne Allen, SSCO at Highfields commented “Having just returned from the National Lead School conference in Telford with the very latest updates this message of a Healthy lifestyle is more important than ever. I was privileged to hear Barry Carpenter give a keynote speech - alarming statistics to say the least - 75% of mental illnesses in adult life begin before 18 years old and by 2020 depression will be the most prevalent childhood disorder. 10-15 year olds who spend over three hours per day on Facebook / social media results in damage occurring to the brain. Evidence suggests the brain is still growing until the age of 25, so the need to get out and be active is very important�.

This week’s maths quiz is … Jasmine and Kamal have been asked to work out 5748 + 893 and 5748 – 893. Jasmine says, ‘893 is 7 less than 900, and 900 is 100 less than 1000, so I can work out the addition by adding on 1000 and then taking away 100 and then taking away 7.’ What answer does Jasmine get, and is she correct? Kamal says, ‘893 is 7 less than 900, and 900 is 100 less than 1000, so I can work out the subtraction by taking away 1000 and then taking away 100 and then taking away 7.’ What answer does Kamal get, and is he correct? If you disagree with either Jasmine or Kamal, can you correct their reasoning?

Written column addition would give you 56. Mental methods - Add the 0.2 to 19.8 to make it 20, then add 36. - Add the 0.8 to 36.2 to make 37, then add 19. - Add the whole number, then add the decimals

Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor)
The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year. We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.
Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher)
If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department. Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
