Newsletter Message from the headteacher I had to tear myself away last night from a brilliant Children In Need fundraiser to go to my son’s parents’ evening. He is in year 8 in a local school that has been attended by two generations of my family. I won’t embarrass my son by divulging details, but it provided another good insight into being a secondary school parent (early days for me) as opposed to being a secondary school educator (which I have been for a little longer). It all helps me to think about Highfields School from your perspective as a parent/carer and to think carefully about the ‘journey’ you have embarked on from that first day in year 7 through to the moment when your child graduates from us and wanders out of our gates on their last day at our school. Meanwhile our key focus remains our lessons and I have, as usual been in three a day this week. The best practice I saw featured teachers who encouraged students to move at their own speed. This meant that they quickly moved from the activity as soon as they had mastered the skill/knowledge involved. It’s so important to me that teachers and students work together to keep the work challenging and interesting. Many of our students are impeccably turned out. However, I received an email on Tuesday from a parent who was quoting a local resident as saying that he was “disappointed in the state of most of the students’ uniform, especially the length of the girls’ skirts”. Apparently, he found it “very embarrassing with the fact that they are representing the Matlock school”. I don’t support the tone of these comments, but they do reflect what other members of the community have said to me. Research suggests that there is no significant difference between the achievement of students in uniform versus non uniform schools and this would definitely reflect my own experience having worked in both. I am aware of no research which has evaluated the difference in success between schools where students observe uniform policy and those where students don’t and therefore can look scruffy. My guess is that the scruffy schools lose out. School leaders will therefore be doing more work to ensure that students respect our uniform policy at all times. As per my opening line, Thursday night’s Children in Need event showcased everything which is brilliant about Highfields students and staff: caring, thoughtful, imaginative and talented. Huge thanks to students and staff, led by Miss Bonsall, who were involved. The festivities appeared to culminate in an opportunity for students to pay money to throw wet sponges at staff, including me and Mr Cole. I taunted students by declaring that I was so sure they would miss that I would not even bother changing out of my suit and tie. It is turns out your children can aim quite precisely with wet sponges, so it was a good job I erred on the side of caution and packed some dry clothes. Mr Marsh Headteacher

Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices 63 bus service – road closure notice We have been made aware by Derbyshire County Council that Badger Lane at Wooley Moor will be closed from 9.30am on Monday 19 November 2018 - works are expected to be complete by Monday 26 November. The closure will affect students travelling on the 63 bus service which will be diverted (see passenger service details below). Newsletter School News Highfields celebrates success at international book quiz for second year running! For the second year running Highfields has become the East Midlands Champions of a prestigious international literature competition and will be representing the region at the UK final next month. A team of four Year 7 and 8 students have made it through to the UK finals of the international Kids’ Lit Quiz, a competition to test students between the ages of 11 and 13 on their knowledge of children’s literature. Earlier this week the team attended the East Midlands regional heat of the competition at Lady Manners School in Bakewell. They correctly answered questions on a wide range of genres and beat over twenty other teams from schools across the region and beyond to achieve first place and become the regional champions! On Tuesday 4 December Tilda, Olivia, Olly and Joel will be heading off to the Kids’ Lit Quiz national finals, to be held at the City of London School for Girls at the Barbican in London. There they will compete against teams from across all parts of the UK and the winners will be invited to take part in the Kids’ Lit Quiz world final in Singapore next summer.
The students were fantastic, answering really difficult questions and demonstrating an amazing knowledge of young people’s literature. They scored an outstanding 86.5 points out of a total possible score of 100. A second Highfields team, composed of Abigail, Ben and Sam in year 7 and Millie in year 8, also took part in the quiz and performed extremely well, finishing in 5th place. We are enormously proud of all the students who took part. Whatever the outcome at the national final in December, this will be a fantastic experience for the students. The event is hosted by the Sheriff of London and will be attended by several well-known children’s authors. The students will be able to meet and chat with the authors and team members from other schools at a celebration tea party to be held at the end of the day. Scholastic Book Fair (Lumsdale) Friday 23 November to Thursday 29 November 2018 A Scholastic Book Fair will be held at Lumsdale next week. This is a ‘pop-up bookshop’ and is an excellent opportunity for students at Lumsdale to buy popular children’s and young adults’ books (sometimes at discounted prices), whilst raising money for the school library at the same time. For every £1 students and staff spend at the Book Fair, our school will earn 25p in Scholastic Rewards, which will be spent on new books for the school library. The Book Fair will be held in the entrance to Lumsdale and will be open every day next week at breaks and lunchtimes - prices start from as little as £2.99. Students who would like to purchase books from the Book Fair will need to bring cash into school on the above dates or purchase gift vouchers in advance online. Newsletter Sports leadership events Sporting Futures visit On Friday 9 November, Jill Eaton, Chief Executive Officer of Sporting Futures visited Highfields to see the team of tutors and apprentices to discuss the school year so far. Jill also provided feedback to tutors on the recent Ofsted of the apprenticeship programme across the country. Jill emphasised that students must be stretched and challenged in both maths and English.
School Sports Partnership Cross Country Finals On Saturday 10 November the SSP cross country finals were held in Ashbourne. Clusters represented were Highfields, Bakewell, Hope Valley, Queen Elizabeth’s and Anthony Gell. Students who won our recent cluster championship attended from All Saints, Lea, St Joseph’s, Winster and Darley Dale Primaries – they all did us proud!

Newsletter Young Ambassador assemblies This week was the start of our Young Ambassador assemblies for years 7, 8, 10 and 11. The main message of these assemblies is to inform our students what is on offer practically, provide club opportunities, flag up health and well-being issues and to address the inactivity of the nation. The national picture is that only 8% of girls meet the national targets for physical activity per day and the boys are not that much higher. The Young Ambassador team have done a fantastic job during the week. Assemblies will be held for the remaining year groups next week.

Newsletter Healthy Lifestyle Conference Our team of health champions in year 9 attended the Healthy Lifestyle Conference in Doncaster with Mrs Turner, Mr Molyneux and Miss Tabbenor on Tuesday 13 November.
Girls Active Project Mrs Turner and Mr Molyneux visited Loughborough University for training on the Girls Active research project for stepping up change.

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.

Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiries (reception) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is reception. Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or pastoral manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year. Subject specific enquiry (subject teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant head of department.

School to home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ assessment profiles/data sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
