Newsletter Message from the headteacher Another great week in your children’s lessons. This week I visited a very exciting music lesson where the teacher was really ensuring that students knew exactly what she expected in a successful piece of music. Later in the week I was stopped in my tracks by the sound of poetry echoing down the corridor - it was the haunting opening refrain of The Listeners by Walter De La Mare and I couldn’t help but listen as the teacher read the opening stanza; his enthusiasm for the poetry totally infectious. I also loved a couple of maths lessons where the teachers had manoeuvred some of their students right into the challenge ‘sweet-spot’ (that place which is hard enough to challenge the student but so not so hard as to discourage them). The fact that most Highfields students are so smart can make less well presented students stick out like a sore thumb. We have worked hard to focus students and staff on learning rather than uniform. Please make sure that your child wears uniform in line with policy to avoid distracting and time consuming discussions about (mainly) non-uniform skirts and trousers. Finally, I would like to recognise the students and staff who made such a success of international trips to Iceland and Lyon during half term. Highfields School is about a lot more than academic results and we like to think of ourselves as a local school with a global outlook. Particular thanks, of course, go to the leaders of these trips, in this case Mrs Cruise and Mrs Bowen, who ensured that their travellers remained safe and sound and hugely enriched. Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Attendance Next week you will receive an e-mail updating you on your child’s attendance since September. We know you want your child to have excellent attendance and you can support us to achieve that in a number of ways:

Tips
Encourage your child to attend school if they have a minor ailment such as a cold or cough. If they deteriorate during the day and become really poorly, we will of course contact you. Students can be given paracetamol in school if we have your consent on file. If you would go to work with the same illness they should be in school.
Book routine appointments with your child’s doctor or dentist during holidays or after school. If they need to attend more complex hospital or orthodontist appointments try your best to get appointments later in the day so students leave school after 2pm. This means the least possible interruption to their learning and they still will receive attendance marks for the full day. Morning appointments mean they are marked absent for the morning if they arrive later than 9.15am.
Make sure your child knows you do not approve of him/her being late or absent.
Have a back-up plan for cold weather for cars not starting.
Encourage your child walk to school or the bus stop with another child who is always on time.
Don’t expect or let older children stay home from school to babysit younger siblings.
Set good examples and enforce rules. Speak well of the school and support school staff. Reward positive improvements.

Newsletter National Anti-Bullying Week: 12-16 November 2018 Next week (12-16 November) is national anti-bullying week and all students in years 7 to 11 will be talking about the theme for this year ‘choose respect’ in assemblies and form time. A consultation undertaken by the Antibullying Alliance with over 800 children and teachers showed that a top priority was showing that bullying is a behaviour choice, and that children and young people can set a positive example by opting to respect each other at school, in their homes and communities, and online. The aims of this week are to support schools and other settings to help children and young people, school staff, parents/carers and other professionals who work with children to understand:
the definition of respect that bullying is a behaviour choice that we can respectfully disagree with each other, ie we don’t have to be best friends or always agree with each other, but we do have to respect each other that we all need to choose to respect each other both face to face and online
Try and take some time next week to discuss with your child what they learnt about respect. You can find out all about anti-bullying week on the AntiBullying Alliance website. Newsletter Year 13 parents/carers – data/student record update Thank you to the parents/carers who have returned the data collection sheet that was issued to year 13 students before the holiday. If you have not returned this yet, please check the data the school holds, amend if necessary, and return to Mrs Bumby as soon as possible to ensure the most accurate information is available on your child. For examination purposes, it is very important that the student’s name corresponds with the name given on the birth certificate because universities and major employers will verify results issued by the examination boards against the name on the birth certificate.
Year 11 parents/carers – careers information Our independent careers advisor, Phil Nelson has been holding careers interviews with year 11 students. Copies of your son/daughter’s career action plan will be sent electronically to their school email account with a copy to parents/carers on the email contact held by school. Please discuss the careers plan with your son/daughter and if you have any queries or would like further information, please contact Phil Nelson (connexions@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk).

Year 10 parents/carers – Y10 curriculum evening Thank you to parents/carers who were able to attend our Y10 curriculum evening on Wednesday 7 November. The evening was a huge success and covered information about the requirements of all relevant qualifications, how you can help your child achieve their targets and beyond in their assessment, including controlled assessments, terminal exams and speaking and listening exams; explanations of the specifications and how they work in practice; where to find past exam papers and on-line resources; examples of good practice and details of the GCSE 1-9 grading system. A short three-question survey has been emailed out to parents/carers following the evening and we would really appreciate it if you could spare a few minutes to complete this electronically. Highfields sixth form A levels are a new adventure, and we want you to love what you learn and how you learn it. In eight of the last nine years, Highfields students have secured places at Oxford or Cambridge. In seven of the last eight years we have been in the top 25% of schools in terms of student progress, and whilst they have been running, students have also gained well paid Degree Apprenticeships with Balfour Beatty, National Grid and Jaguar Land Rover. If you love what you learn, beyond what A Levels demand, then you get great results. 75% of our Extended Project students achieved A* grades in 2018. These students almost invariably head for Russell Group universities or Oxbridge. This track record is the result of a tight knit group of students who create a positive, supportive and competitive atmosphere as they learn. It also comes from a stable and passionate staff team where many of our subject specialists are also examiners. Getting a degree apprenticeship is a competitive business, so we support students with mock interviews and presentation practice, with the same care that we give to university applicants applying for most competitive courses. Sometimes students underestimate what they can achieve and where they can get to, so we’ll have a quiet word where necessary, to make sure you reach the place which best fits your talents. Wherever your ambitions lie, we’ll find ways to support you. We want to be equally well-known for our community involvement, sense of fun and energy. We have regular volunteering in primary schools, residential care homes and in activity centres like Golding Grange. Students run four social events each year, ranging from open mic to a surprisingly popular barn dance. This year we’re also taking our sixth form trip to Iceland. Students who have joined us from other schools have taken part in all of these activities. They have greatly benefitted our community and have successfully moved on to destinations ranging from Cambridge to Higher Apprenticeships. Newsletter School News Highfields Remembers Highfields School fell silent today as all staff and students came together for Remembrance Day, marking the centenary year of the end of the Great War. Students across all year groups contributed by writing messages of thanks and remembrance on over 500 individual poppies. These were then arranged and put on display in a poppy cascade at the front of school. We shall remember them.

Newsletter Sports leadership events Voice of Sport Group for 2018-19 The 2018-19 voice of sport group (pictured below) met for the first meeting of the year on Friday 26 November.
‘Go lead’ sports leaders On Monday 5 November Tom and Will in year 12 qualified as ‘Go Lead’ sports leaders. They took part in a Sports Leaders UK one day course covering eight different units during the day and putting the theory into action by leading students from All Saints.

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.

BOOK CLUB RECOMMENDATIONS This week’s school book club recommendation is ‘Biscuit Barrel’ by Jacqueline Wilson I recommend a thrilling book called ‘Biscuit Barrel: Cliffhanger and Buried Alive’. I really like it because it’s by my favourite author, Jacqueline Wilson. It’s an amazing book and I like the motto ‘don’t give up’ – even if you’re scared. You will wonder what is going to happen next throughout the book as it’s filled with surprises. Overall, I think this book is amazing and I wouldn’t change a single thing about it. Charlotte (year 7)

Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiries (reception) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is reception. Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or pastoral manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year. Subject specific enquiry (subject teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. School to home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ assessment profiles/data sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
