Newsletter Message from the headteacher A great week in and out of lessons on both sites. One of my favourite moments came when I came across a sixth form lesson where students were physically linked by a web of string. They explained to me (in Spanish, so I hope I’ve got this right) that each time they made a relevant point in Spanish they wrapped the string around their finger and passed the ball to the next person to speak. Over time the teacher could see who had made the most points and who had responded to whom by tracing the patterns in the web of string between the students: Highfields teaching at its most inventive. I have now completed my first term as headteacher of this wonderful school and would like to thank any student, member of staff or parent/carer who has taken the time to offer me words of encouragement. Everyone needs feedback, but people usually respond best when they receive a mixture of positive and negative. Make sure you check out the ‘school news’ section of this newsletter on Book Buzz: great initiative to inspire young readers. And huge thanks to those staff and students involved in recent evening events including the vocal recital, sixth form barn dance and the year 7 and 8 disco. The disco will remain in my memory for quite a while because it was, as far as I’m aware, the first time my daughter (I brought my own kids along) has ever been invited to dance by a boy. She cheerfully accepted and disappeared off to the dance floor. I might have been anxious were it not for the fact that the boy is a Highfields student and therefore a person of unquestionable character. I hope that our students, staff and families enjoy a break next week.

Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Internet and telephone access issues - thank you Thank you to parents/carers of students at Lumsdale for your patience and understanding during the recent disruption with the telephone and email system being down at upper site. This situation was outside of our control and caused due to a break in the fibre optic cabling in Milton Keynes affecting a number of Derbyshire schools. Full service has now resumed and apologies for the inconvenience this may have caused. Thanks also to all staff at Highfields in working around this issue, in particular to reception staff at lower site for stepping in to take all diverted calls from Lumsdale and our IT department for acting swiftly to ensure temporary measures were in place to enable parents/carers to contact school.
Data collection sheets We will be sending out data collection sheets with student profiles/data sheets for each year group during the academic year (as explained in our end of year information issued in July). We will inform parents/carers when we issue this information to check and return as soon as possible to ensure the records we hold in school are up to date. However, if contact details have changed in the meantime, please inform the relevant pastoral manager.
Year 13 parents/carers – data collection update Year 13 data collection sheets have been issued this week along with data sheets. Please could parents/carers check the data school holds, amend if necessary, and return to Mrs Bumby to ensure the most accurate information is available on your child. For examination purposes, it is very important that the student’s name corresponds with the name given on the birth certificate because universities and major employers will verify results issued by the examination boards against the name given on the birth certificate.
Year 11 parents/carers – Y11 information evening Thank you to parents/carers who were able to attend our Y11 information evening on Thursday 25 October. The evening covered information on the year ahead, including preparation for the forthcoming mock exams (27 November-7 December 2018) and the summer GCSEs. Newsletter Year 10 Curriculum Evening Wednesday 7 November 2018 at 6.00pm Lumsdale site All curriculum departments at Highfields would like to invite you to our year 10 curriculum evening for parents/carers on Wednesday 7 November 6pm in the Wheeldon Hall. During this evening we will provide you with: information about the requirements of all relevant qualifications and how you can help your child achieve their targets, and beyond, in all of their assessments, including controlled assessments, terminal exams, and speaking and listening exams an explanation of the specifications and how these work in practice ideas on how to support your child's learning and where to find past exam papers and online resources examples of good practice and ways to help in preparation for assessment details of the changes to the GCSE 1-9 grading system The evening opens with a brief introduction, followed by four 15-minute sessions in classrooms covering the four option blocks that your son/daughter is following this year and closes with presentations from GCSE English, maths, science and PRS, which all students at Highfields are studying. We anticipate the event will last two hours and we would encourage your child to attend with you.

Newsletter Highfields sixth form open evening Join us on Monday 12 November 2018 from 6pm at Lumsdale (upper school) A Levels are a new adventure, and we want you to love what you learn and how you learn it. In eight of the last nine years, Highfields students have secured places at Oxford or Cambridge. In seven of the last eight years we have been in the top 25% of schools in terms of student progress, and whilst they have been running, students have also gained well paid Degree Apprenticeships with Balfour Beatty, National Grid and Jaguar Land Rover. If you love what you learn, beyond what A Levels demand, then you get great results. 75% of our Extended Project students achieved A* grades in 2018. These students almost invariably head for Russell Group universities or Oxbridge. This track record is the result of a tight knit group of students who create a positive, supportive and competitive atmosphere as they learn. It also comes from a stable and passionate staff team where many of our subject specialists are also examiners. Getting a degree apprenticeship is a competitive business, so we support students with mock interviews and presentation practice, with the same care that we give to university applicants applying for most competitive courses. Sometimes students underestimate what they can achieve and where they can get to, so we’ll have a quiet word where necessary, to make sure you reach the place which best fits your talents. Wherever your ambitions lie, we’ll find ways to support you. We want to be equally well-known for our community involvement, sense of fun and energy. We have regular volunteering in primary schools, residential care homes and in activity centres like Golding Grange. Students run four social events each year, ranging from open mic to a surprisingly popular barn dance. This year we’re also taking our sixth form trip to Iceland. Students who have joined us from other schools have taken part in all of these activities. They have greatly benefitted our community and have successfully moved on to destinations ranging from Cambridge to Higher Apprenticeships. SEND drop-in session Tuesday 20 November 2018 from 2-4pm or 5-7pm at Lumsdale We would like to invite parents/carers of SEND students to our SEND drop-in sessions between 2pm - 4pm or 5pm-7pm on Tuesday 20 November at Lumsdale (upper school site), where we will discuss learning support and SEND provision. Newsletter School News Library news – year 7 students are ‘buzzing about books’ The term has ended this week on a high for year 7 students with each student receiving a present of a book. With financial support from the school’s PTFA we participate in a scheme called ‘Book Buzz’, run by the Book Trust, a national charity that promotes reading for pleasure. A few weeks ago, each year 7 student viewed a range of 12 different children’s books and chose one that they would like to receive a free copy of. The students have been waiting with anticipation for the books to arrive and were very excited finally to be presented with their ‘books to keep’ this week. The students really enjoyed the selection process and for many it was the first time they had chosen a book of their own. In a recent survey of the reading habits of our year 7 students we found that one in five has never visited a bookshop. Browsing the books on offer in the Book Buzz scheme led to a great deal of conversation about the children’s preferences and a surge of interest in reading. The feedback from students has been extremely positive. “Book Buzz is amazing!” commented one student. “You can discover books that are just right for you.” “Book Buzz is really cool … everyone gets a book they can read themselves and there isn’t a time limit to read it. I love my Book Buzz book!” said another. Independent studies show us time and again that reading can transform a child’s future. We believe that taking part in the Book Buzz scheme helps many of our students take an important step towards developing a life-long love of books. We are extremely grateful to the PTFA for providing the financial support we need to enable us to offer every year 7 student the gift of their own book. Mrs Robinson Library

Newsletter Highfields musicians experience The Beatles Story, Liverpool On Friday 19 October year 10 musicians visited ‘The Beatles Story’ in Liverpool. The attraction is the world’s largest permanent exhibition purely devoted to the lives and times of The Beatles.
Students took part in the immersive journey which tracks the story of how the four young lads from Liverpool were propelled to the dizzy heights of fame and fortune from their humble childhood beginnings. The class took a walk along the historic Albert Dock for a photo opportunity near the famous Beatles statue and took in Liverpool culture. The magical mystery tour was courtesy of ‘Mr O’Reilly travels’ - “bang on!” Mr Rowley Head of Music

Newsletter Sports leadership events KS2 tag rugby Our key stage 2 tag rugby event took place at Highfields on Friday 19 October. A total of 124 students participated in teams from Winster, All Saints, Tansley, South Darley, Darley Dale, Lea and St Joseph’s Primary Schools, supported by staff, parents and members of Matlock Rugby Club.
Sports leaders from years 8-13 officiated, putting their recent training from Derbyshire Coach, Steve Grainger, in to practice - they performed brilliantly under the watchful eyes of the PE apprentices, Mrs Turner and Mrs Allen. Steve Grainger commented “I firstly must say what a thoroughly great bunch of students you had on the course, it makes my job all that easier when they show the high levels of participation and enthusiasm as this group did”. Well done to Libby (year 9) who was voted ‘official of the tournament’.

Darley Dale Primary school gained Bronze; All Saints Tigers were awarded Silver and Lea Owls received Gold awards – well done to all taking part! Teams from All Saints and Lea will represent the Highfields Cluster at the School Sports Partnership Finals at Lady Manners School on Wednesday 14 November.
Primary Schools Cross Country Event 2018 The cross country event finally took place on Tuesday 23 October in bright sunshine - a contrast to last week after we had to cancel the event due to a waterlogged field! Highfields Sports Leaders Academy students were officials and marshals alongside PE apprentices, Miss Tabbenor and Mr Edenbrow. Primary schools taking part were All Saints, St Joseph’s, Wessington, Lea, Castle View, Darley Dale, Elton and Winster with 229 runners participating from reception through to year 6.

Level 5 Primary School PE Specialism and PE Subject Leadership Induction On Friday 26 October Mrs Allen led the induction day for the level 5 qualification. Highfields School has become a Professional Learning Centre for this qualification awarded by Sports Leaders UK and The Association for Physical Education (afPE). Mr Molyneux (Highfields School) and Miss Whetton (Ashover Primary School) have begun their journey to be awarded a qualification in the PE specialism for primary staff.

Fixtures: Wednesday 7 November 2018 Year 9 girls are attending the County Netball Championships at Repton – students will be leaving Highfields at lunch and returning at approximately 5pm.
Wednesday 7 November 2018 Highfields sixth form football team are hosting Repton at Lumsdale in the second round of the ESFA National Cup - kick off at 3pm.
Results: Year 10 & 11 girls netball On Wednesday 24 October our year 10 and year 11 girls hosted a netball match against Anthony Gell School. Our year 11 side had previously suffered a big defeat against the same team, but this time they stuck together and executed an excellent game plan. This time the result was much closer - with 2 minutes to go the score was 13 - 13, but unfortunately, we conceded two late goals losing 13 - 15. However, this shouldn't take away from an amazing performance by the team – well done! The year 10 girls team played out of their skin, they passed with accuracy, had excellent movement off the ball and tightened up their defense. We also scored some excellent goals and it is clear that our goal shooter and goal attack have been practising their finishing. In the end we came out 19 2 victors - well done to everyone involved.
Year 10 football Unfortunately, the year 10 football team had a last minute cancellation this week as the opponents couldn't raise a team. However, the squad stayed to complete an extra training session - thank you for showing dedication.

Match Report Year 7 & 8 football – match report 10 goal thriller at St Mary’s School for our year 7 and 8 girls’ football team A debut start for many of our year 7s, as we travelled to St Mary’s High School last night. Highfields got off to a cracking start with a goal from Lucy in the first 5 minutes, quickly followed by an awesome shot from team captain Sophie - unfortunately, the crossbar took the full force! Highfields continued to push for the second goal, which came from the captain’s perseverance. Highfields 2 nil up! With a couple of adjustments to the home side, St Mary’s got back in the game with a goal. Highfields were quickly back on the attack and were awarded with a corner. Skipper Michaella stepped up and with an inch perfect cross found Michaella headed in Highfields third goal. New keeper Maddie made a great save just before the half time whistle. Half time score 1-3. St Mary’s started the second half with determination and caught the Highfields side off guard putting two quick goals past the keeper. Highfields regrouped and defended well but an unfortunate tackle resulted in the referee pointing to the penalty spot. Despite Lucy’s best efforts the penalty put the home side in front. Followed quickly by another putting the score at 5-3. Highfields once again showing resilience, surged forward and saw Lucy hit the back of the net for a second time. St Mary’s tried to get back in the game but a fabulous save from the Highfields goalkeeper kept the ball out. Another attack by Highfields was awarded with a free kick right on the edge of the box, Michaella stepped up, tension rising and fortunately for the opposition the ball narrowly missed the goal. Another great save from Lucy kept Highfields dreams alive. Sadly, a home side goal just before the final whistle resulted in a 6—4 defeat for Highfields. Highfields worked extremely well as a team and the game was played in a mature and respectful way. All involved should be very proud of themselves, especially the new year 7’s – well done. Match Report Match Report U18s football – match report Ashfield School vs Highfields School (first team) National Cup 1st Round Team manager, Mr Moss, started Highfields in a 4-4-2 formation. Kicking up hill in the first half, Highfields worked hard, putting pressure on their opponent from the off. Forwards Jack and Robbie had some good chances, but nothing fell for the Highfields strike partnership in the opening quarter of the game. Highfields defence remained strong, keeping the Ashfield attackers out with strong tackles from centre back’s Marco and Tom, and some great goalkeeping from Jack. The best chance came near the end of the first half when Robbie played his strike partner Jack through on goal. Despite Jack managing to lift the ball over the keeper with great technique, the ball stopped just before crossing the line and the Ashfield defender cleared the ball from danger. The whistle blew and Highfields went in to the half time break at 0-0, despite being on top for the majority of the game so far. The second half saw quick success for the boys in blue. Highfields’ pressure had won them a corner. Scott whipped a menacing cross in to the near post, Robbie rose and with a bullet header straight in to the top corner, put Highfields 1-0 up. After celebrations Highfields were ready to pile pressure straight back on to Ashfield. With some great football, Jack found himself with an opportunity. After a poor clearance from the Ashfield defender, the ball dropped nicely for Jack just inside the box. With a volley of perfect execution in to the bottom left corner, he gave the Ashfield goalkeeper no chance of getting down to his right. Highfields were now 2-0 up and clearly the better team in the game. With 15 minutes left Ashfield got into gear and started to trouble the Highfields defence and midfield. After a good run down the right from the Ashfield forward, taking on two players, he found his teammate on the edge of the box. With a lack of concentration from Highfields and nobody to close down the Ashfield midfielder, he rocketed the ball in the top right corner. It was an unstoppable strike to bring Ashfield back in to the game at 2-1. There was more success for Ashfield five minutes later. With a dangerous long ball from their centre back, into the feet of the striker who was positioned on the corner of the 18-yard box, Ashfield had men forward and looked dangerous. However, despite his support, the Ashfield forward went solo. He managed to weave past two Highfields defenders and hit the ball firmly in to Jack’s top left corner. Another unstoppable shot from Ashfield got the game back to level, now 2-2. The final moments of the game saw one last attempt from either side but good goalkeeping at both ends meant this National Cup First Round game was going to extra time. With light dwindling, one 7 and a half minute period of play was decided for extra time. If the game was still level after that it would be decided by a penalty shootout. Highfields captain, Joe, won the toss giving them the slight downhill advantage. This period of play was all Highfields. With the edge of the box efforts from Joe and Taylor kept out by the Ashfield goalkeeper, as well as some last ditch defending, regular play was over and the game was heading to penalties.

Newsletter The order was decided and Highfields felt confident in their ability, despite the lack of penalty practice. Despite a couple of unfortunate missed penalties, Jack, Brad and Greg converted from the spot. It was 3-3 after five penalties heading into sudden death! After a good penalty from Ashfield it was down to Harry to keep the boys alive in the competition. He stepped up calmly, slotted the ball down the right and sent the keeper the wrong way. With a failed attempt from Ashfield, Marco, after a superb performance and winning man of the match, now had the opportunity to win the game for Highfields. With just a short run up, he firmly hit the ball into the bottom left corner too far away from the keeper for him to stop it. After sportingly shaking hands with their opponents after a hard fought game, it was all celebrations for the boys in blue. A well-deserved victory, sending them into the 2nd Round to face Repton. Onwards and upwards for Highfields first team footballers!

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.

BOOK CLUB RECOMMENDATIONS This week’s school book club recommendation is ‘The Tales of Beedle the Bard’ by J K Rowling I think that this is an excellent book as it is quick and easy to read. It has five quick short stories, each with its own magical creatures. The book also has some quick notes from Albus Dumbledore. I think that people of all ages (and muggles too!) will enjoy this book as it is funny and interesting. My favourite short story is ‘The Tale of the Three Brothers’ because it tells a story to not be greedy and follow your instinct and heart. I also really enjoy this short story as it is mentioned in ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ to help Harry understand what he needs to do. Courtney (year 9)
