Newsletter Message from the headteacher You may have been aware this week that Highfields School was referenced widely in the media. At the time of writing the story looks to be resolving with some more positive headlines (‘Matlock mum praises school response…’ etc.). I am a lifelong learner and this week’s lesson has been that anything shared on Facebook, which I previously believed to have been visible to Facebook friends only, can be accessed by the media unless privacy settings are changed from their default. In terms of the atmosphere in school, this matter has brought us together as a team, with many students being protective of what is essentially a school matter. I would like to thank anyone who supported the school through a tricky week; the many kind and encouraging comments from members of the school community have been both humbling and welcome. Back in classrooms I have still managed to get to around 10 lessons this week to sample staff and student brilliance. The image is something I found in a Y11 art lesson: beautiful, isn’t it?
The other highlight of the week occurred when a year 10 student engaged me in a ‘battle of the pianos’ at lunchtime. He played a tune, I tried to respond in kind by playing what I thought was an even better tune and he beat me into submission with a faultless performance of eighties classic ‘The Final Countdown’ by Europe (I don’t think he was making a comment on Brexit but I may be wrong). We are being highly visible at lunchtimes to further improve the quality of unstructured time for students. Thank you for ensuring that your child always pays due attention to quality of their conduct and appearance.

Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Y11 yearbook update Highfields School is proud to be an inclusive, happy community that values every individual and inspires them to achieve their full potential. While we applaud the initiative and dedication of our students in creating their year book, we recognise that some sections require review so that they fully reflect the school’s ethos and values. Our newly formed year book committee, comprising students and school leaders, will now be revising the categories. Our aim is that the committee preserve a sense of fun whilst also reflecting the aspirational tone of our school motto - ‘be the best you can’.

Newsletter Year 10 Curriculum Evening Wednesday 7 November 2018 at 6.30pm Lumsdale (upper school) site All curriculum departments at Highfields would like to invite you to our year 10 curriculum evening for parents/carers on Wednesday 7 November 6.30pm in the Wheeldon Hall. During this evening we will provide you with: information about the requirements of all relevant qualifications and how you can help your child achieve their targets, and beyond, in all of their assessments, including controlled assessments, terminal exams, and speaking and listening exams an explanation of the specifications and how these work in practice ideas on how to support your child's learning and where to find past exam papers and online resources examples of good practice and ways to help in preparation for assessment details of the changes to the GCSE 1-9 grading system The evening will begin in the Wheeldon Hall with presentations for GCSE English, maths, science and PRS, which all students at Highfields are studying. There will then be four 15-minute sessions in classrooms close to the Wheeldon Hall, covering the four option blocks, enabling you to attend sessions for all of the courses your son/daughter is following this year. We anticipate the event will last two hours and we would encourage your child to attend with you.
Highfields School Sixth Form Open Evening Monday 12 November 2018 from 6-8.30pm Lumsdale (upper school) site We are holding our sixth form open evening on Monday 12 November 2018 and look forward to welcoming all year 11 students to discover more about life in sixth form and A-level study at Highfields. Our friendly sixth form team will be on hand to meet with current students and parents, as well as external students and parents visiting Highfields for the first time. Talks will take place at 6pm and 7pm and all subject departments will be open for you to visit. We hope the evening will give everyone a chance to speak to subject staff and students about their choices and pathways for post-16 study. If you have any questions regarding the evening or are unable to attend and would like to arrange a visit and meet the sixth form team, please contact the sixth form office on 01629 581888 extension 165. We very much hope you will be able to join us on 12 November and we are sure you will find the evening to be both enjoyable and informative. Newsletter School News Year 11 students attempt to escape ‘Deception’ Recently a group of year 11 computer science students battled the clock to solve various challenges at ‘Deception’ escape rooms in Matlock. Students thoroughly enjoyed working together in real life environments to solve clues and find their way out of different rooms by using their computational thinking and problem solving skills. Working in teams, students had the chance to solve three rooms all with different themes and challenges. They were presented with a number of locked boxes, each with a 4-digit combination, and Caesar ciphers (decoders) to solve clues that were left around the room. Using the Caesar cipher students solved clues to reveal the key for the cipher that generated the number for the combination lock. Well done to one member of the team who managed to solve a seemingly unsolvable puzzle with very little effort! Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, students were beaten by the clock and although very close, did not manage to escape within the time given. All enjoyed the experience and commented below: “I really enjoyed the school trip, the room that my group went in was really enjoyable with a balanced amount of ‘scare factor’, logic and puzzle included. The trip was very enjoyable and I would love to return to attempt a different room. The staff at Deception were very welcoming and while you were waiting to enter a room there were other challenges to take part in.” “When we got to Deception we were separated into groups ready for the escape rooms. A couple of the groups went straight into the rooms while the rest of us waited in the waiting room on the comfy sofas. There were lots of puzzles and logic games on the tables for us to have a go at cracking. We went in rooms named ‘jilted’ and ‘trapped’. My group was the second group in ‘trapped’ - it was amazing! We had to escape a doctor’s office and a hidden science lab. The team were in contact with us through a walkie talkie so that if we really needed help they would be there. My group almost reached the end and staff said if we had an extra five minutes we would have got out! It was a great day out and I want to go to the escape rooms again at some point in the future.” “I loved the trip! The treasure hunt was a great way to start the day. The room ‘tilted’ was definitely the highlight of the day. It was an amazingly terrifying experience with emotional thrills, under pressure code breaking and creepy music to capture us in the moment. The rooms were decorated brilliantly and the frustration of not completing the room still haunts me!” Miss Alcock School Business Apprentice

Newsletter Year 7 activity day – a day to remember Starting year 7 can be both exciting and scary with lots of new friends to make and staff to remember. As part of our successful transition programme we aim to help build relationships between students and staff from the very start of the year. One way we do this is by giving all year 7 students the opportunity to enjoy a full day at Lea Green Activity Centre. Students had the opportunity to take part in fun, yet challenging activities at Lea Green to bring them closer together and create a bond between classmates and key members of staff that will last throughout their time at Highfields. All students were involved in either walking to or from Lea Green, which was another key part of the day designed to give students the chance to talk with new people and get to know them even better. This year’s walk was filled with positivity and no moaning – well done all! On arrival students were split into smaller groups to take part in three activities, each designed to get students working together - low ropes, buggies and problem solving. The group activities involved running and sliding on a gym mat in a knockout style competition which seemed to generate a lot of enthusiasm. Students scaled the small assault course of low ropes in teams of three with each team member taking it in turns to support each other around the course. Obstacles included climbing over and crawling under logs, walking over a see-saw, swinging from ropes and many more. This activity allowed students to improve their communication with each other and work with different people - for many students this was one of the highlights. The go-kart style buggies proved a challenge as students pedalled around a small circuit. Single or double buggies were available and students needed no encouragement from staff to keep rotating, ensuring everyone had a go on each of the buggies - excellent driving skills were displayed from all staff and students who took part working well together as a year group. Students mastered their problem solving skills working in small groups to tackle a number of challenges, one of which involved students having a number of tyres and a narrow sheet to travel from one end of the course to another, all whist avoiding the ‘lava’. It is clear that it wasn’t only the sunny weather that helped make the September day enjoyable, it was the students and staff involved, including the Lea Green activity leaders. Year 7 is the time to make memories and new friends that will last a lifetime and for many, year 7 activity day plays a key part in making this happen enabling students and staff to get to know each other outside of the classroom environment. We would like to send a huge thank you to all students and staff who took part in the success of the day. All year 7 students received an orange t-shirt to wear on the day and keep as a reminder of the memories and friendships made. Despite the day being exhausting, it was undoubtedly a success

Newsletter Musical workshop by West End and Olivier award winning actor James Lomas On Friday 12 October, James Lomas, West End and Olivier award winning actor, visited Highfields to inspire students across all 3 key stages. James Lomas, who played Billy Elliot in 'Billy Elliot: The Musical' in 2005, is an actor and professional performer, now specialising in high quality workshops in musical theatre. He has worked in the West End in many shows for 13 years and became the youngest actor to receive a ‘Laurence Olivier Award’ for Best Actor for his role as original ‘Billy’. James ran a workshop for 50 students, lasting four hours. It included a vocal warm-up, learning 3 part harmony and recreating original choreography. The students were focusing on The Greatest Showman song 'This is Me'. James answered many questions from inspired students. He told stories about his time spent with Elton John, Ken Dodd, David Beckham, David Walliams and many other celebrity professionals. Students thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the workshop and were thrilled to get selfies with James at the end. He was truly inspiring for all students, particularly those applying for scholarships at London Theatre Schools in the near future. Charlotte exclaimed “This workshop was amazing! I loved the chance to sing in harmony with my friends - it sounded amazing!” and Tom said “James was great - He's done so many great things and he's so inspiring! The dance was fast but when we all picked it up it looked brilliant”. "It was so fantastic to have a working professional in school who had so much experience at such a young age. Seeing the children so enthusiastic is always fantastic, but this was another level because of his status in the industry and how relatable he is being from Sheffield and being a professional actor from the age of 14" said Miss Bonsall, Head of Drama and Theatre. "I was so proud of how focused and energised students were and how much they wanted to learn and engage. The students sounded beautiful as an ensemble and performed with commitment and focus. The students are looking forward to friends and family seeing their performance of the piece in The Evening of theatre in January." Miss Bonsall Head of Drama and Theatre

Newsletter East Midlands Sports Leadership Academy of the Year – success for Highfields! We are pleased to announce that on 25 September 2018 Highfields School received the amazing news that we had won the Sports Leadership Academy of the Year 2018 for the East Midlands region. This means we are one of the top six academies in the UK! Sports Leadership Academy of the Year is a biennial award by Sports Leaders UK, awarded to the academy who goes above and beyond for their local community. Highfields Sports Leadership Academy was nominated for the award as we are already considered a ‘Centre of Excellence’. Highfields offer a number of Sports Leaders UK qualifications to students, with the Playmaker Award available to Year 5/6 as part of a collaboration with our local primary schools. Students who take part visit Highfields every year for the afternoon where they are essentially taught the skills to become a good sports leader, including both verbal and non-verbal communication. The skills learnt can then be used to run several playground activities at their own school. The primary leaders who choose to come to Highfields in year 7 are able to continue with the leadership qualifications and students who previously didn’t take part have to opportunity to get involved as well. Qualifications for years 7-13 become more demanding in nature, but still help to develop key skills such as communication and team building. The highest level (level 3), also holds a number of UCAS points for sixth form students. Qualifications can be extended beyond year 13 in the form of PE apprenticeships. Highfields Sports Leadership Academy has over 300 members, the largest in the area and for a number of years now, Highfields Sports Leadership Academy has been heavily involved in organising events, not just for local schools but the community as a whole. Students volunteer throughout the year at a number of events, most recently Sports Leaders held a Primary Cluster Mini Soccer Tournament at Cavendish Fields where 21 leaders were involved. Community based events included Zumba sessions at Tree Tops Nursery and working with SEN adults whose ages range from 18-65. Upcoming events include tag rugby, goalball, high 5 netball, orienteering and many more! Sports Leaders UK does not just focus on sport, surprisingly they also offer a leadership programme for core subjects including English, maths and science where students deliver and lead sessions to younger students. Highfields adopted this programme this year and it has already grown from strength to strength allowing us to stand out further and provide additional skills for all of our students. It is clear that Highfields Sports Leadership Academy does not just benefit the local community, but also the people involved. It allows students to develop confidence along with other important qualities whist doing something that they enjoy. Tutors, Mrs Turner and Mr Molyneux, deserve a mention for all their hard work alongside Miss Wise, Mrs Hollinrake, Mrs Morgan and in particular Mrs Allen, Centre Manager - well done to everyone involved! Highfields Cluster events Unfortunately, the Highfields Cluster cross country event on Tuesday 16 October was postponed due to a waterlogged field – this has been rearranged for Tuesday 23 October from 1-3pm. On Friday 19 October the Highfields Cluster tag rugby festival did successfully take place.

Newsletter Sports Update Mr C Shirtcliffe (Head of PE)
Fixtures: Monday 22 October 2018 Years 7 and 8 girls’ football team are travelling to St Mary’s for a county cup match. Students will leave at 3pm and return to Starkholmes at approximately 5.45pm.
Thursday 25 October 2018 Years 11 and 10 netball and two football teams will be involved in a home fixture against Anthony Gels starting at 4pm (football teams tbc).

Results: Year 11 table tennis and badminton against Lady Manners On Monday 15 October our year 11 boys and girls table tennis and badminton teams played Lady Manners in their first match of the season. We played an extremely depleted Lady Manners team but used the opportunity to gain match experience. Highfields won several of the matches showing some excellent skill and tactics - well done to all those involved, can’t wait for a rematch.
Year 10 boys/sixth form football teams Our year 10 boys’ football team and sixth form first team played their second round English Schools cup matches on Thursday 18 October. The first team travelled to Ashfield - their game was tight ending 2 - 2 after normal time, however our boys kept their composure and progressed through to the next round winning 5 - 4 on penalties - excellent performance. The year 10 boys travelled to Wales High just outside Rotherham. The team played some excellent football and had a 2 goal lead at half time through ‘man of the match’ Tom. Wales came back after half time, but our resilience showed and we were victorious winning 2 – 1 and ending a good week of sport at Highfields - well done to all involved and thank you to staff for your support.

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. BOOK CLUB RECOMMENDATIONS This week’s school book club recommendation is ‘The Hobbit’. If you are a book lover who enjoys an adventure or an action book, then you should read The Hobbit. Although this book was written in 1937 it is still a great book. It does contain some words you may not recognise but I thought that that made it a lot more interesting. Alex (year 9)

Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiries (reception) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is reception. Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or pastoral manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year. Subject specific enquiry (subject teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher.
