Newsletter Message from the headteacher As you may know I aim to sample around 3 lessons per day as I love to see how well students are working with their teachers. As the father of a boy in Y8 (at another school) I know how tricky it is to monitor our children’s school work from home. You can do so really easily in two ways - firstly, you can check parent portal (http://www.highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk/portals.html) to see whether they have received achievement or behaviour points.
Watch out for teacher feedback about
homework - in my house a missed homework leads to an Xbox ban and a reduction in pocket money. Secondly, you can simply look from time to time at any book and check out the standard of presentation. If the writing is unclear to you, you can take it that it is unclear to the teacher who is trying to help him / her and unclear to an examiner trying to award marks. Your support is ALWAYS valuable. Highlights of this week include a 9-0 victory for Y7 footballers against Lady Manners, where a family friend of 30 years is deputy headteacher (not that I am competitive) and a theatre workshop from acclaimed West End star James Lomas. Next week we are trialling some revised procedures around lunchtime supervision. As always, our aim is to have a calm and peaceful environment where children can enjoy eating their lunch and socialising over lunchtime. Please remind your child, should they need reminding, that Highfields is a school where respectful and responsible behaviour is expected at all times.

We would like to invite all Year 11 parents and carers to the year 11 information evening arranged for Thursday 25 October from 6.30pm in the Wheeldon Hall to give help, advice and guidance for students leading up to their GCSE exams. We will provide a summary of the year ahead including: preparation and revision strategies for the mock exams the forthcoming careers convention and Post-16 Evening information on exam boards, key dates and revision guides well-being strategies and how to access support We look forward to seeing you at the evening. Newsletter Year 10 Curriculum Evening Wednesday 7 November 2018 at 6.30pm, Lumsdale (upper school) site All curriculum departments at Highfields would like to invite you to our year 10 curriculum evening for parents/carers on Wednesday 7 November 6.30pm in the Wheeldon Hall. During this evening we will provide you with: information about the requirements of all relevant qualifications and how you can help your child achieve their targets, and beyond, in all of their assessments, including controlled assessments, terminal exams, and speaking and listening exams an explanation of the specifications and how these work in practice ideas on how to support your child's learning and where to find past exam papers and online resources examples of good practice and ways to help in preparation for assessment details of the changes to the GCSE 1-9 grading system The evening will begin in the Wheeldon Hall with presentations for GCSE English, maths, science and PRS, which all students at Highfields are studying. There will then be four 15-minute sessions in classrooms close to the Wheeldon Hall, covering the four option blocks, enabling you to attend sessions for all of the courses your son/daughter is following this year. We anticipate the event will last two hours and we would encourage your child to attend with you. Mr Redhead Head of Year 10
Highfields School Sixth Form Open Evening Monday 12 November 2018 from 6-8.30pm, Lumsdale (upper school) site We are holding our sixth form open evening on Monday 12 November 2018 and look forward to welcoming all year 11 students to discover more about life in sixth form and A-level study at Highfields. Our friendly sixth form team will be on hand to meet with current students and parents, as well as external students and parents visiting Highfields for the first time. Talks will take place at 6pm and 7pm and all subject departments will be open for you to visit. We hope the evening will give everyone a chance to speak to subject staff and students about their choices and pathways for post-16 study. If you have any questions regarding the evening or are unable to attend and would like to arrange a visit and meet the sixth form team, please contact the sixth form office on 01629 581888 extension 165. We very much hope you will be able to join us on 12 November and we are sure you will find the evening to be both enjoyable and informative. Sports leadership events Key stage 1 multi-skills activities On Tuesday 9 October Highfields sports leaders worked hard leading over 200 students in key stage 1 multi-skills activities during the day. Winster, Elton, Tansley and All Saints primary schools attended the morning session with Castle View, Wessington, Lea, South Darley and Darley Dale primaries represented in the afternoon. By providing multi-skills sessions for primary school students it enables them to understand the fundamentals of sport from an early age whilst having fun.

Newsletter Autumn primary school sports evenings The final session of our autumn primary school sports evenings was held on Wednesday 10 October with students from South Darley Primary School.
Mini soccer finals Well done to Lea and Tansley primary schools for representing the Highfields Cluster in the mini soccer finals.
Tag rugby sports leaders training Highfields sports leaders took part in a training session on Thursday 11 October. Derbyshire coach, Stephen Grainger, led the session how to be a tag rugby official in preparation for the Highfields Cluster Tag Rugby Festival. The festival takes place on Friday 19 October where Highfields sports leaders will officiate and demonstrate their recently acquired skills.

Under 16 boys and girls table tennis and badminton teams are away at Lady Manners. Students will leave Lumsdale at 3.30pm, returning to school at 5.45pm.
Wednesday 17 October
Boys’ football against Lady Manners – tbc
Thursday 18 October
Year 10 boys’ football team is playing away at Wales High, Rotherham in the National Cup second round. Students will leave Lumsdale at 3pm and return between 6.30-6.45pm.
Results:
County Netball Championship On Wednesday 10 October our under 16 girls competed in the County Netball Championships. The girls played with positivity and demonstrated some excellent skills against the top teams in the County. The team scored some good results and yet again did Highfields proud – well done!
County Cup Football Our year 7 boys’ football team travelled to Lady Manners on Thursday 11 October for the first round of the County Cup. The boys played some outstanding football and demonstrated excellent attacking play. We won with an amazing 0-9 victory! Well done – a special mention goes to Louis who scored five goals.

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.

Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. School to home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ assessment profiles/data sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
