Newsletter Message from the headteacher This week I have been into around 10 lessons and have really enjoyed all of them. I saw maths teachers working to ensure that student mathematicians could work at their own speed, that no child is limited by the pace of the lesson nor any child left behind. This is not always as easy as you may think when there are 30 very able students in a class. In a year 8 music lesson there was pin drop silence when students listened to each other talking about and playing ostinatos. The thing that many student musicians find most difficult to achieve? silence (especially when they have an instrument in their hands). Thank you to all of the teachers, TAs and technicians whose work I have sampled this week. We are continuing to finesse our strategic plan and recently presented a draft to staff. Student ‘selfregulation’ is one of three foci. This term refers to the way in which students approach their relationships, health and their studies. It is our aim that our students are able to establish strong and happy relationships with those around them, make healthy choices and are quick learners. Currently we are aiming to highlight good examples of this and also, we are being very clear when students make choices which undermine the quality of relationships in the school, their health or their studies. I know I can count on your support in this work. Thank you for entrusting us with your child/children. We are trying very hard to ensure they get a great education.

Electronic cigarettes Electronic cigarettes (ecigs) are not allowed in school, nor are students permitted to use ecigs on their way to school or on their way home from school. The school’s behaviour policy clearly outlines expectations for student conduct which, for the vast majority of the time, reflects extremely positively on our school community. If students bring ecigs into school, they will be confiscated for five school days. In this event, we will make arrangements to speak with parents/carers about the issue.

We would like to invite all Year 11 parents and carers to the year 11 information evening arranged for Thursday 25 October from 6.30pm in the Wheeldon Hall to give help, advice and guidance for students leading up to their GCSE exams. ADVANCE NOTICE Year 10 Curriculum Evening Wednesday 7 November 2018 at 6.30pm, Lumsdale (upper school) site All curriculum departments at Highfields would like to invite you to our year 10 curriculum evening for parents/carers on Wednesday 7 November 6.30pm in the Wheeldon Hall. During this evening we will provide you with: information about the requirements of all relevant qualifications and how you can help your child achieve their targets, and beyond, in all of their assessments, including controlled assessments, terminal exams, and speaking and listening exams an explanation of the specifications and how these work in practice ideas on how to support your child's learning and where to find past exam papers and online resources examples of good practice and ways to help in preparation for assessment details of the changes to the GCSE 1-9 grading system The evening will begin in the Wheeldon Hall with presentations for GCSE English, maths, science and PRS, which all students at Highfields are studying. There will then be four 15-minute sessions in classrooms close to the Wheeldon Hall, covering the four option blocks, enabling you to attend sessions for all of the courses your son/daughter is following this year. Highfields School Sixth Form Open Evening Monday 12 November 2018 from 6-8.30pm, Lumsdale (upper school) site We are holding our sixth form open evening on Monday 12 November 2018 and look forward to welcoming all year 11 students to discover more about life in sixth form and A-level study at Highfields. Our friendly sixth form team will be on hand to meet with current students and parents, as well as external students and parents visiting Highfields for the first time. Talks will take place at 6pm and 7pm and all subject departments will be open for you to visit. We hope the evening will give everyone a chance to speak to subject staff and students about their choices and pathways for post-16 study. If you have any questions regarding the evening or are unable to attend and would like to arrange a visit and meet the sixth form team, please contact the sixth form office on 01629 581888 extension 165. We very much hope you will be able to join us on 12 November and we are sure you will find the evening to be both enjoyable and informative. Newsletter School news Highfields students honoured by local firms Students at Highfields School were honoured by two local firms in a special assembly celebrating their participation in a careers initiative designed to help to prepare them for the world of work. Anne Ashman, general manager of Tansley-based intelligent transport firms Mobile Visual Information Systems (MVIS) and Bartco UK, accompanied by technical apprentice and former Highfields student, Cain Gregory, visited the school to announce the winners of the 2018 MVIS Challenge. Now in its second year, the MVIS Challenge is an annual event where Highfields students are invited to consider the various roles that MVIS’ variable message signs (VMS), manufactured by sister company Bartco UK, can perform. Initially a year eight initiative, this year the MVIS Challenge was extended to include year nine students, who were asked to look at ways in which VMS could help to reduce airport congestion for the benefit of holiday makers. The MVIS Challenge is one element of MVIS’ and Bartco UK’s longer-term partnership with the school, which also includes work experience placements and interview practise. Anne is an enterprise advisor to Highfields, helping it to build its careers strategy. Jane Turner, Highfields life and work skills co-ordinator said “the MVIS Challenge is a great way to engage students with the idea of examining a real-world scenario and working together to develop solutions to improve it. It is an excellent way to give them a taste of the world of work.” Anne added “once again, the standard of the students’ entries was exceptionally high and we were delighted to be able to announce the winners in this special assembly. MVIS and Bartco UK are committed to supporting local youngsters as they prepare for employment, and this exercise demonstrated that some of them are already well on their way.”

World’s Biggest Coffee Morning The world’s biggest coffee morning took place on Friday 28 September and students and parents/carers at lower school were totally amazing helping raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. We had so many donations that cakes were sold at break and dinner and they went down a treat with the hot chocolate! The support you offered by sending in cakes for students to sell and sending them in with some money to purchase the drinks and cakes meant that we totally smashed last year’s total of £349.00. The final amount raised for this worthwhile cause was £509.00. Thank you so much to everybody who helped contribute; making cakes, buying cakes and eating cakes. We are very proud of our students and parents/carers and so pleased to be able to send this to Macmillan Cancer Support. Here are some photos of the amazing cakes! Lower school pastoral team

Young Ambassador Programme & Year 6 Bronze Ambassador Conference 2018 Background to the Young Ambassador programme The Young Ambassador programme started in 2006 to bring the ‘Singapore promise’ to life, a commitment made in 2005 by Seb Coe to ensure the London 2012 Games has a lasting legacy on young people around the world. The programme is aimed to see young people driving opportunity, engagement and change for other young people using the Olympic and Paralympic movement as a positive catalyst to do so. Young Ambassadors is designed to build the leadership skills of young people and as a result they are empowered to take on the following roles:
be the youth voice for PE and school sport in their school and community promote the positive values of sport be a role model and champion for PE and school sport increase participation opportunities and healthy lifestyles for everyone.
Year 6 Bronze Ambassador Conference 2018 On Tuesday 2 October Highfields School organised the Year 6 Bronze Ambassador Conference 2018 with guest of honour Joanne Jackson, Olympic swimmer.

Newsletter 15 students took part in the National Young Ambassador programme, training to become role models to their peers and community. The national programme begins in primary schools through to secondary school with students involved from years 7 to 13 (Year 7/8 - Bronze plus; Year 9 - Peer leaders; Year 10 – Silver; Year 11 – Gold and Year 12/13 – Platinum). Year 6 students were taught how to set up fun games and how to become a great role model in their primary schools and Highfields Ambassadors will see the progress they have made when they visit the Highfields cluster primary schools between January and March 2019. The students involved from Highfields also sit on the Voice of Sport group which meet monthly. The Young Ambassador programme leads to awards being made at the annual Sports Leadership Award evening on Thursday 11 April 2019.
Primary Sports evening On Wednesday 3 October four students from South Darley Primary School had the opportunity to take part in fencing as part of the series of sports offered. They showed amazing talent for their first attempt at a new sport.
Sports Apprentice update Mrs Allen visited Mr Molyneux, PE apprentice, at Monyash Primary School on Thursday 4 October. Monyash is a new primary school who have joined us for this academic year and Mr Molyneux is making a fantastic start working with the primary students. Our PE apprentices received a further training day from County provider, Dominic Limb on the fundamentals of sport on Friday 5 October.

Fixtures: Monday 8 October 2018 Year 10 and 11 table tennis competition against Lady Manners School and Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School. Students will leave at 3.30pm and return to school at 6pm.
Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 October 2018 Football matches are planned, awaiting final details – Mr Shirtcliffe will confirm with students involved next week.
Fixture results:
Football We travelled to Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School on Thursday 4 October with football teams from year 7 boys, year 8 boys and year 8 girls. Our year 7 boys played some excellent football and were unlucky in front of goal, the game finished 0 – 0. Unfortunately, we lost the game on penalties - all penalty takers showed courage and did Highfields proud. The year 8 girls had their first game of the year scoring 3 goals and playing some good attacking football. Unfortunately, we conceded 4 goals. Year 8 boys played some clever football also scoring 2 goals, but some luck didn’t go our way and we conceded 4 goals. Well done everyone! Mr Shirtcliffe

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds We have started promoting the online careers programme called ‘START’. connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential.
START is designed to
The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.

Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiries (reception) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is reception. Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or pastoral manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year. Subject specific enquiry (subject teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant head of department.

School to home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ assessment profiles/data sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
