Newsletter Message from the headteacher I teach on a Thursday morning and this week my year 9 students were really engaging and interesting as usual. Instead of just replying ‘present’ to their name on a register I asked them to respond to their name by sharing something for which they are grateful. The answers, you will be glad to hear, mainly centred on their family, carers, grandparents and parents. Other students opted for pastimes such as ‘football’ and ‘swimming’. One student said, ‘a free education’. My cynical teacher’s mind assumed at first that he was being sarcastic. But he wasn’t; he was genuinely just glad to be in a country where that can happen. Young people always have surprises to offer. I would like to compliment families on the conduct and behaviour of their children. I walk the site during most lunchtimes and the vast majority of students are friendly, courteous and polite. On two or three occasions only since I joined the school I have been made aware of a student who was refusing to follow reasonable instructions from a member of staff. I respond robustly in these circumstances because the safety and good order of the school community depends on students respecting the authority of adults to make decisions when things go wrong. Thank you for your continued support in promoting a safe and harmonious school community and for communicating to your children the importance of responsible and respectful behaviour. Finally, congratulations to our sports teams who achieved a series of strong results earlier this week. I love my sport and I love it even more when we play as well as these students did!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION School transport changes affecting students from South Wingfield, Wessington and Tansley We have been notified by Derbyshire County Council School Transport that G&J Holmes has taken the decision to cancel their commercial service 150 after Friday 5 October 2018. This service transports students who live out of the normal area of school (South Wingfield and Wessington) and students who live within three miles of school (Tansley). Although the Council does not have any responsibility for arranging transport for this group, local operators have been approached to see if there is any interest in replacing the service, but no interest has been received. Discussions have also taken place with Slack’s Coaches to see if other services that are provided can help and we can confirm the following which will commence on Monday 8 October:
Tansley – there are between 15 and 20 seats available on service 463 which operates from Lea and students from the village will be able to pay an 80p single fare to travel but will have to board at the bus stop on the main road opposite The Tavern. Students are advised to take care when crossing the road.
South Wingfield – there are approximately 15 to 20 seats available on service 440 which operates from Crich and this will be extended to operate from South Wingfield Market Place at 7.40am. Students from the village who wish to travel will have to pay a £1.50 single fare.
Wessington – unfortunately, there is no school bus provision available from this area. Both the Council and school understand this will cause difficulties for some families who will need to consider alternative options. There is limited public transport and information is available from the following link www.travelineeastmidlands.co.uk/. Where possible, families are encouraged to car share.
We acknowledge that this impacts mainly on a number of students from Wessington, but please be aware that the 440 and 463 services may be affected by the number of students attempting to travel on these services as a knock on affect from the withdrawal of the 150 service. Although we are in contact with School Transport at Derbyshire County Council, at present no alternative operators have expressed an interest in providing a service on the 150 route. We will keep parents/carers and students updated of the situation if anything changes.

Highfields School Sixth Form Open Evening Monday 12 November 2018 from 6-8.30pm, Lumsdale (upper school) site We are holding our sixth form open evening on 12 November 2018 and look forward to welcoming all year 11 students to discover more about life in sixth form and A-level study at Highfields. Our friendly sixth form team will be on hand to meet with current students and parents, as well as external students and parents visiting Highfields for the first time. Talks will take place during the evening and all subject departments will be open for you to visit. We hope the evening will give everyone a chance to speak to subject staff and students about their choices and pathways for post-16 study. If you have any questions regarding the evening or are unable to attend and would like to arrange a visit and meet the sixth form team, please contact the sixth form office on 01629 581888 extension 165. Newsletter School news Matlock Bath illuminations winning boat design For the fifth year running year 7 students had the exciting opportunity to create the opening boat from the Matlock Bath Illuminations - this year’s winning design was entitled ‘light the love for the world’ and was launched at the opening night. During their time in year 7 students compete against each other in teams for the opportunity to design the historic candle boat to lead the illuminated boat procession. Each year our students create models of their chosen design and as a group decide which model would represent them. A ‘dragon’s den’ style event is then held where a team of representatives for the form’s chosen boat present their idea to a panel of expert judges who decided on the winning design. The Matlock Bath Venetian Boat Builders Association are then tasked with producing the design ready to launch at the September illuminations. On Saturday 15 September the winning students, Grace, Emily, Mia, Lydia and Anya (now in year 8), their families and Highfields’ staff attended the illuminations to view their winning design. The students thoroughly enjoyed seeing their design professionally built, observing the illuminated parade and firework spectacular.
The Highfields candle boat is the first boat in the parade and can be seen every weekend on the River Derwent up until 28 October. The Matlock Bath Illuminations has a long-established history dating back to 1897 – first held to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. It was the recollections of an earlier visit to Matlock Bath, by the then Princess Victoria that inspired the illuminations. Princess Victoria recalled how, when staying in Matlock Bath, she looked out of her hotel window and saw the candle lights were reflected in the River Derwent that flows through the centre of the village. The twinkling lights made a lasting impression on the young Princess. To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee in 1897, the village was illuminated by fairy lamps and Chinese and Japanese lanterns with a torchlight procession through the village, followed by a procession of illuminated boats on the river and the limestone gorge rock face was decorated with coloured bonfires. The event has continued and still features the decorated boats that are now produced by the members of the Matlock Bath Venetian Boat Builders Association and rowed by them during the illuminations season. The Arkwright Cup, donated by Sir Richard Arkwright in 1903, is awarded to the overall winning design and the boat parade continues to feature one candle-lit boat in the traditional Victorian style designed over the last five years by Highfields students.

Newsletter Library news David Walliams is top of the book charts with Highfields year 7 students Every year we ask our new year 7 students to share with us their favourite books. This year’s survey results reveal that David Walliams is the most popular author and his latest book ‘Bad Dad’ was named as ‘favourite book’ the greatest number of times. Close behind in the popularity stakes, and probably fuelled by film tie-ins, are J K Rowling’s Harry Potter series, Jeff Kinney’s ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ and ‘The Hunger Games’ series by Suzanne Collins. This comes as no surprise as these are all books that rarely stay on the library shelves for longer than a few days. Students also mentioned long-established authors Jacqueline Wilson, Michael Morpurgo and Anthony Horowitz many times in the survey, along with more recent celebrity author, David Baddiel. Interestingly this year many students named several long-ago-published modern classics as their favourite titles, including Roald Dahl’s ‘Matilda’, JRR Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘Carrie’s War’, by Nina Bawden, a wonderful, but often now sadly overlooked historical novel. Students are also up-to-date with newly-published fiction. Many of the latest bestsellers feature on their list of favourites, including fantasy novel ‘The Wizards of Once’, by Cressida Cowell, and ‘Chase’, the first book for younger readers by popular adult crime writer, Linwood Barclay. The range and complexity of books being read by year 7 students is very impressive. This is a year group that clearly loves to read – most are already regular users of the school library and many have joined Year 7 Book Club. The Leadership Academy of the Year awards celebrate the great work of the Sports Leaders UK Leadership Academies who have gone above and beyond to deliver exceptional courses and for young people who have used their leadership skills to improve their local community. Newsletter Sports leadership events The Primary School Mini Soccer event took place at Cavendish Fields on 27 September with 25 sports leaders on duty from the Highfields Sports Leadership Academy. Congratulations to the winning schools: Small school winners – Tansley Primary School Large school winners – Darley Dale Primary School Girls winners – Castle View Primary School Overall tournament winners - All Saints Junior School The award for ‘best officials on duty’ were given to Harry (year 13), Ben (year 12), Holly (year 12) and Alisha (year 12).
Stand Up Derbyshire Day Friday 28 September is ‘Stand Up Derbyshire Day’ where schools across the country are encouraged to be active in all lessons across the curriculum.
Sports apprentice update Mrs Allen visited PE apprentice, Mr Hill, at Carsington Primary School and Mr Molyneux at Elton Primary School in his role as a teaching assistant – both members of staff are having a huge impact in their respective schools. Miss Elliot led a successful session of wrestling activities at ‘This Girl Can’ conference for primary schools held at the Arc in Matlock on 26 September. In addition, PE apprentices Mr Molyneux and Mr Edenbrow led South Darley Primary School students in fun activities supported by our year 9 sports leaders.

Football successes On Wednesday 26 September our year 11 boys’ football team showed the true meaning of resilience, beating Anthony Gell School 3-2 - this was their first ever win in Highfields colours. Goal scorers were Mikail, Dylan and Cory. Mr Fox, Manager, said “they played extremely well and showed class in the right areas.” The year 8 boys’ football team also had success beating Anthony Gell 2-1. Some excellent football was played and again they were a true credit to the school. Goal scorers were Jonah and Louis.
Netball results The year 10 netball team played their second game of the season and came out victorious, playing some flowing netball showing great team ethic. Finally, the year 11 netball team suffered defeat, but played some very good netball in an improved performance from last week at Tupton. Well done to all! Mr Shirtcliffe

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds We have started promoting the online careers programme called ‘START’. connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential.
START is designed to
The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.

BOOK CLUB RECOMMENDATIONS The Lumsdale book club would like to introduce a regular book recommendation section for students and their first recommendation is

watched the film adaption. The book is extremely touching and an emotional rollercoaster all the way. The author captures the thoughts and feelings of someone being bullied, as well as those of his friends. Why not read one of the companion books if you've already read Wonder. Newsletter Highfields School Governing Board 2018-19 Highfields School is fortunate in the kinds of people who have volunteered to become governors, each bringing a variety of skills and experience to support the school. Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiries (reception) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is reception. Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or pastoral manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year. Subject specific enquiry (subject teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant head of department.

School to home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ assessment profiles/data sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
