Newsletter Message from the headteacher Another really enjoyable week at Highfields School. There are now very few discussions about uniform and we are able to focus on what really matters: preparing students to thrive in a changing world. Huge thanks to any parent or carer who has supported their child in taking pride in their appearance. Year 6 open events were extremely positive and we had more visitors than in previous years. If you know someone with a year 6 child don’t forget to recommend Highfields if you believe it would be the right school for them. You will see later in the newsletter that we are trying to help find solutions with regards to travelling to and from school. We are always eager to help but it should be remembered that we have very limited (if any) control over local transport solutions. At my last school the best solutions came from families (especially out of catchment) forming links with other families experiencing similar issues. I have spent the week visiting lessons as usual. You should be so proud of your children; their response in a whole range of subjects to the challenges that teachers present to them is always impressive. My favourite lesson this week was a maths lesson where a student struggling initially with plotting points on graphs finally had a eureka moment when I was within earshot. IMPORTANT INFORMATION School transport changes affecting students from South Wingfield, Wessington and Tansley We have been notified by Derbyshire County Council School Transport that G&J Holmes has taken the decision to cancel their commercial service 150 after Friday 5 October 2018. This service transports students who live out of the normal area of school (South Wingfield and Wessington) and students who live within three miles of school (Tansley). Although the Council does not have any responsibility for arranging transport for this group, local operators have been approached to see if there is any interest in replacing the service, but no interest has been received. Discussions have also taken place with Slack’s Coaches to see if other services that are provided can help and we can confirm the following which will commence on Monday 8 October:
Tansley – there are between 15 and 20 seats available on service 463 which operates from Lea and students from the village will be able to pay an 80p single fare to travel but will have to board at the bus stop on the main road opposite The Tavern. Students are advised to take care when crossing the road.
South Wingfield – there are approximately 15 to 20 seats available on service 440 which operates from Crich and this will be extended to operate from South Wingfield Market Place at 7.40am. Students from the village who wish to travel will have to pay a £1.50 single fare.
Wessington – unfortunately, there is no school bus provision available from this area. Both the Council and school understand this will cause difficulties for some families who will need to consider alternative options. There is limited public transport and information is available from the following link www.travelineeastmidlands.co.uk/. Where possible, families are encouraged to car share.
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for years 9-13 Students in years 9 to 13 have the opportunity to become involved in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Students start by taking their bronze award followed by silver and progress to their gold award. Students are required to complete a personal programme of activities in various sections to start their DofE adventure and they can participate at any level and each stage leads to a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Mrs Wildgoose is holding a DofE meeting on Monday 24 September at 3.45pm in L4 for students wishing to sign up or find out more about the award.

World’s Biggest Coffee Morning The World’s biggest coffee morning is on Friday 28 September and students at lower school are raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. Starkholmes students will be joining in with this during break time on Friday by selling hot chocolate and cakes. We are asking for any support you can offer by sending in cakes for students to sell and reminding students to bring in money on Friday if they wish to purchase drinks and cakes. It was an amazing success last year with students in years 7 and 8 raising £349 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Please help support us this year by sending in cakes to see if we can beat this amount for this worthwhile cause. Thank you in advance for your help.

Newsletter Year 7 homework:
We believe at Highfields School that it is important to establish a regular pattern of working at home to encourage independent learning. This might involve students in following their own investigations or in revising and broadening new concepts introduced in school, possibly through reading, writing or individual research. The year 7 homework timetable indicates the days students should expect to get homework. Please be aware at times, some subject areas may decide to set an extended piece of homework or project that lasts a few weeks. We would greatly appreciate your support in ensuring all homework is completed to a good standard and that it is handed in on time. All homework will be recorded on Show My Homework – an online homework monitoring system. We would be grateful if you could sign into this system and monitor the organisation and completion of homework. Students in year 7 should expect to receive about 15 minutes work from each subject indicated on a particular evening. On many occasions, they will have more than one evening to complete the work and they may be given a task that will spread over several homework sessions. There is a homework club operating every lunchtime in room 4 from 1.00-1.30pm, where a member of staff is available to offer help and students can access computers. Many subjects also offer subject based homework clubs at lunchtime, in which students can get extra help from their teachers. Some students prefer to do some of their homework here. If you are at all concerned over the homework your child is receiving, either because they receive too much or too little, or because they appear to be struggling with the work, please contact the year 7 pastoral team immediately. If you have any other worries, do please also get in touch.
Year 7 absence: If for any reason your child is absent from school it is important that you ring into school that morning to let us know the reason for their absence, telephone 01629 832314. We cannot emphasise enough the importance of good attendance and the impact this has on your child’s progress. We will also be monitoring punctuality closely, particularly students arriving at school in the mornings. Please ensure you emphasise to your child the importance of arriving at school in good time to be in their form room by 8.40am. Any child not registered by 8.45am will receive a late mark which will remain on their attendance record. Obviously this will be cleared if it is due to a bus arriving late at school. Can we also remind you that we are unable to authorise any leave or absence for holidays during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances, eg an event. Any unauthorised holidays will be referred to the local authority. This may result in parents/carers being issued with a fixed penalty notice and/or court action.
Year 7 emergency closure procedure: Please ensure that you and your child have discussed the emergency closure procedures so that in the event of an emergency school closure, ie heavy snow preventing the school site from opening, your child knows what instructions to follow.
Year 7 free school meals: Many families are entitled to free school meals but do not realise this and therefore they are not claimed. Part of every school's budget is calculated using free school meals, so if you feel you might be entitled, your child can collect an application form from the school office or please contact email info@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk. Once again, thank you for supporting such a successful start to year 7.

Newsletter School news Highfields year 6 open event success It was a pleasure to see so many parents/carers and year 6 students attending our open afternoon, joining tours around both our school sites during the working day, and at our open evening. Parents/carers and students were able to talk to staff and students, take part in activities and hear more about what Highfields can offer. Feedback from the event has been excellent with a number of parents/carers commenting they came away with from an enjoyable and informative evening with a real insight into who Highfields are and what we do. The deadline for submission of secondary school applications is 31 October and we hope our open events enabled parents/carers to make an informed decision regarding progression to secondary school. However, if any parent/carer did not get the opportunity to attend or would like a prospectus and guide to Highfields or to arrange a visit, please contact our lower site at Starkholmes on 01629 584020 and we will be happy to organise this for you. Our website also has a wealth of information available and provides an excellent flavour of our school. If you do choose Highfields School for your child, there will be further opportunities for them to visit us and spend time at lower site next summer.
Destinations of students leaving year 13 in summer 2018 The vast majority of our students go on to pursue higher education choices. However, some students decide to embark on high quality training programmes with employers or higher level apprenticeships - this year students have gained excellent national apprenticeships with companies such as Jaguar/Landrover, National Grid and Balfour Beatty. Notices: 27 September - Highfields Cluster Primary Mini Soccer On Thursday 27 September Highfields cluster primary mini soccer tournament is taking place at Cavendish Fields from 9am until 3pm –all parental consents should be returned as soon as possible.
Sports leaders primary sports evenings The autumn block of primary sports evenings began on Wednesday with South Darley taking part. PE apprentices Mr Molyneux and Mr Edenbrow led our sports leaders and year 6 students in fun activities in the sports hall at Lumsdale.
PE apprentice and sports leadership update The 2018/19 PE apprentice team are: Mr Molyneux – Level 5 qualification Miss Tabbenor, Mr Hill and Mr Edenbrow – Level 3 qualification Highfields PE apprentices successfully completed their first aid qualification or refresher course on Friday 14 September led by Judith Richer from TrainInc. PE apprentices received the first of three CPD sessions from County provider Dominic Limb on Friday. The session covered curriculum content, high quality delivery and health and safety.

Newsletter Sports leadership tutors Mrs Allen, Mrs Turner and Mr Molyneux took part in an online refresher training session on Friday with Sports Leaders UK to keep up to date with course content. The two hour training ensures we keep our practice current and maintains our status as a Centre of Excellence for the delivery of the sports leadership courses.

Fixtures: Wednesday 26 September – away at Anthony Gell School The year 8 and year 11 boys’ football team will be travelling to Anthony Gell School to compete in the league, with a potential netball fixture for the girls alongside (currently awaiting final confirmation – students will be informed directly). Students will leave school at 3.15pm and return to both sites between 5.30-5.45pm.
Results: Match overviews On Thursday 20 September our year 10 and 11 girls’ netball teams and year 10 and 11 boys’ football teams travelled to Tupton Hall for our first development games. Aside from the storm that was brewing, all of our students showed resilience and were extremely competitive despite the downpour! Both boys’ football teams were missing players however they managed to hold it together playing some excellent football but were unlucky and narrowly lost both games. The year 11 girls had their first game of the year and showed a good fighting spirit making a positive start, but unfortunately succumb to a more experienced side. The year 10 team played extremely well passing the ball well, breaking quickly and showed excellent organisation coming out winners. Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds We have started promoting the online careers programme called ‘START’. connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential.
START is designed to
The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV so they can start to build their own careers profile.

Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiries (reception) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is reception. Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or pastoral manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year. Subject specific enquiry (subject teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant head of department.

School to home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ assessment profiles/data sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
