Newsletter Message from the headteacher It has been another really successful week at Highfields School. As always we have very high expectations of students and the pride they take in everything they do, including the pride they take in their appearance. 99% of students are now in full Highfields uniform leaving us open to focus on the things which really matter; the students, their learning and their incredible potential. I have now met all of year 7 to 11 students in assemblies and led with one clear message which I know a few of them have taken home. My message was pretty straightforward: I care about you and your learning above everything else. At the ‘success in the sixth form’ event earlier this week we were reminded by Mr Flett of the characteristics of a great sixth form learner. At their most impressive they are inquisitive, curious, searching and motivated to learn for learning’s sake. They know that a great student can learn from a mediocre teacher (luckily we have none) but a poor student is unlikely to learn, even from the greatest teacher. I wish all of year 12 and 13 a really successful year and look forward to meeting them on Monday. A Marsh

Newsletter Welcome back Mrs Rifkin
Our students have arrived back to school full of enthusiasm and energy. It has been a delight over the last week to catch up with the different adventures students have had over the summer. I’ve spoken with students who have been lucky enough to have travelled far and wide, some students who have had great days out and many who have enjoyed spending time with their friends and family. Year 11 have returned with a new maturity and a range of transferable skills gained from their work experience ready to embark on their GCSE studies. I am extremely impressed with how smart the students look. The vast majority are wearing their uniforms correctly and they look absolutely fantastic. We very much want all of our students to feel part of the Highfields community and our smart uniform is a symbol of this. Thank you to all of our students and their families for supporting our work to get our uniform right. There are a small minority of students we are still working with to ensure they are in correct uniform. We would ask their parents and carers to ensure this is rectified as quickly as possible so that we can focus all of our energy on our learning and supporting students to achieve their full potential. It is important that all students attend every day of school that they can as we know excellent attendance is directly related to progress. Wherever possible please ensure that medical appointments are made after the school day and students attend every lesson they possibly can.

Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Polite request – dropping off and collecting students We would like to remind parents/carers that students should be dropped off and collected outside of the school site in the mornings and at the end of the school day. Parents/carers should not enter or park in the school car park allocated for staff and visitors, or bus bays allocated for school transport. If any parent/carer requires permission to be given due to individual circumstances, please request this from school if you have not already done so. We are always keen to be good neighbours and to protect the safety of all pedestrians and road users. With this in mind please exercise care and consideration during busy times and take care not to block residential driveways or to use private car parks of local businesses when dropping students off. Thank you for your co-operation.
Highfields PTFA Annual General Meeting We would like to invite all parents/carers, teachers and friends of Highfields School to the Annual General Meeting of the Highfields Parents, Teachers & Friends Association (PTFA) on 10 October 2018 at 6.30pm at Lumsdale (upper school site) in room L6. Newsletter Year 7 Key information from Mrs Hollinrake & Mrs Redhead As we approach the end of our third week of school, we would like to let you know what a good start the new year 7’s have made. They are coping very well with the daily routines of secondary school life. Thank you for your support; all the year 7 students look very smart and are well equipped to begin their time in secondary education. If you have not already done so, please ensure all clothing and equipment has your child’s name on it.
Year 7 events this term: Please find below the forthcoming events for year 7 students:
Tuesday 25 September – Activity day for 7JB, they need to be dropped off at school as normal. They will need collecting from Lea Green at 3.30pm
Tuesday 25 September – Activity day for 7TW and 7JTH, they need to be dropped off at Lea Green at 8.50am. Please do not arrive earlier as staff will not be on site until then. They will go home in their usual way.
Wednesday 26 September – Activity day for 7AMD and 7BW, they need to be dropped off at school as normal. They will need collecting from Lea Green at 3.30pm.

Year 7 homework: We believe at Highfields School that it is important to establish a regular pattern of working at home to encourage independent learning. This might involve students in following their own investigations or in revising and broadening new concepts introduced in school, possibly through reading, writing or individual research. The year 7 homework timetable indicates the days students should expect to get homework. Please be aware at times, some subject areas may decide to set an extended piece of homework or project that lasts a few weeks. We would greatly appreciate your support in ensuring all homework is completed to a good standard and that it is handed in on time. All homework will be recorded on Show My Homework – an online homework monitoring system. We would be grateful if you could sign into this system and monitor the organisation and completion of homework. Students in year 7 should expect to receive about 15 minutes work from each subject indicated on a particular evening. On many occasions, they will have more than one evening to complete the

Newsletter work and they may be given a task that will spread over several homework sessions. There is a homework club operating every lunchtime in room 4 from 1.00-1.30pm, where a member of staff is available to offer help and students can access computers. Many subjects also offer subject based homework clubs at lunchtime, in which students can get extra help from their teachers. Some students prefer to do some of their homework here. If you are at all concerned over the homework your child is receiving, either because they receive too much or too little, or because they appear to be struggling with the work, please contact the year 7 pastoral team immediately. If you have any other worries, do please also get in touch.
Year 7 absence: If for any reason your child is absent from school it is important that you ring into school that morning to let us know the reason for their absence, telephone 01629 832314. We cannot emphasise enough the importance of good attendance and the impact this has on your child’s progress. We will also be monitoring punctuality closely, particularly students arriving at school in the mornings. Please ensure you emphasise to your child the importance of arriving at school in good time to be in their form room by 8.40am. Any child not registered by 8.45am will receive a late mark which will remain on their attendance record. Obviously this will be cleared if it is due to a bus arriving late at school. Can we also remind you that we are unable to authorise any leave or absence for holidays during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances, eg an event. Any unauthorised holidays will be referred to the local authority. This may result in parents/carers being issued with a fixed penalty notice and/or court action.
Year 7 emergency closure procedure: Please ensure that you and your child have discussed the emergency closure procedures so that in the event of an emergency school closure, ie heavy snow preventing the school site from opening, your child knows what instructions to follow.
Year 7 free school meals: Many families are entitled to free school meals but do not realise this and therefore they are not claimed. Part of every school's budget is calculated using free school meals, so if you feel you might be entitled, your child can collect an application form from the school office or please contact email info@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk. Once again, thank you for supporting such a successful start to year 7.

Year 11 careers interviews During year 11 all students will have at least one individual careers interview with the Careers Advisor currently employed by "Ideas 4 Careers". Students are encouraged to discuss their current ideas and are informed about the various post 16 options available. Following on from the interview they will receive a careers plan. There will be additional careers guidance during form time, assemblies and enrichment activities. The Careers Service is also available to year 12 and year 13 students to discuss post 18 options.

Year 6 open afternoon and evening event Wednesday 19 September 2018 We warmly invite parents/carers and students in year 6 who would like to join us next year, in September 2019, to attend our open afternoon and evening on Wednesday 19 September 2018. There will be the opportunity to see both sites during the working afternoon with students taught in their timetabled lessons. In the evening, at our lower school site (Starkholmes), you will have the opportunity to hear about our approach to education, ask questions, meet staff, participate in activities and have a guided tour.

Year 6 open afternoon and evening arrangements Open afternoon (Starkholmes and Lumsdale sites): Between 2.00pm and 4.00pm you will be able to tour either site to see our school at work (until the end of the school day at 3.30pm). You will see how we support students to achieve their potential by providing a caring and varied learning environment.
Open evening at Starkholmes: Our open evening will help enable you to make an informed decision regarding your child’s progression to secondary school, ahead of the deadline of 31 October for submitting your application. Upon arrival in the evening a prospectus, detailing information about the school and a programme for the evening will be available. During the evening you will be able to meet staff, ask questions and join guided tours around lower site to see a variety of activities taking place. There will be two identical talks taking place in the evening from 6.30pm for parents/carers to attend. These will be run by Mr Rodgers (Associate Assistant Headteacher at lower school) and Mrs Redhead & Mrs Hollinrake (joint Heads of Year 7). There will be an opportunity to meet Mr Marsh (Headteacher) who will be available to answer any questions you may have.
Further information on Highfields School: If you are unable to attend the open afternoon/evening and would like a prospectus and guide to Highfields or to arrange a visit, please contact school on 01629 584020 and we will be happy to organise this for you. Our website has a wealth of information available and provides an excellent flavour of our school. If you do choose Highfields School for your child, there will be further opportunities for them to visit us and spend time at lower site next summer. We very much hope you will be able to join us on 19 September; we are sure you will find the evening to be both enjoyable and informative. We look forward to showing you how we learn and work.

Highfields Sports Leadership Academy 2018-19 Students who are interested in joining the sports leadership academy will be given a consent form for parents/carers to sign with a kit list attached should you wish to purchase any sports leaders kit. The first events with an opportunity to volunteer at are: Primary sports evenings run on Wednesdays from 3.45-4.45pm starting on 19 September 2018 Year 5/6 primary schools mini soccer event at Cavendish Fields on 27 September 2018 If students are selected to officiate at any sports leaders event they will be given a letter with a consent form.
PE Apprentices 2018-19 The induction day for the PE and school sport apprentices took place last Friday. Karen Kelly, senior tutor from Stevenage led the apprentices through their induction. The 2018/19 apprentice team are: Mr Molyneux – Level 5 qualification Miss Tabbenor, Mr Hill and Mr Edenbrow – Level 3 qualification The apprentices will be working in Highfields and a number of local primary schools over the course of the year.

Newsletter Sports Update Mr C Shirtcliffe (Head of PE)
Fixtures: Thursday 20 September 2018 Year 10 and 11 boys football and year 10 and 11 girls netball teams playing away at Tupton on Thursday. Students will leave Lumsdale at 3.30pm, returning at 6.00pm. Further fixtures are planned. Students will be information and full details will be listed in future newsletters.
Results: Boys football results against Queen Elizabeth’s On Thursday 13 September Highfields’ boys football teams played away against Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Ashbourne. Our year 7 boys played some excellent football, hitting the bar and post, missing many chances, but despite all their hard work the team unfortunately lost 1-0 to a break-away goal on the counter having hit the crossbar. The Year 10 team played well in a hard-fought game, but ended the game losing by 3 goals. The first team played in an action-packed game, scoring 3 goals. But conceded 3 goals in succession early on which ultimately cost them the game losing 5 - 3. Well done to all who played! Mr Shirtcliffe

Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiries (reception) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is reception. Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or pastoral manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year. Subject specific enquiry (subject teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher.
