Newsletter Headteacher’s message Thank you to all students and staff who have made me so welcome this week; this is a wonderful and welcoming school. I would also like to offer huge congratulations to new year 7 and year 12 students for successfully completing the first few days of their first winter term at Highfields School. I’m really happy to say that most students in years 7-11 attended on Thursday in correct Highfields uniform and this improved further on Friday. This year regular uniform checks will ensure that we don’t have to talk about poor uniform and instead can talk about students, their learning and their future. Thank you so much to Highfields parents and carers for all their support in ensuring their children arrived back at school in fine fettle and ready to learn.

Examination Board contingency day 2019 The 2019 summer exams may seem like a long way away, but we wanted to make you aware of some important information from the examination boards that will affect all students taking examinations next summer. 2019 is the first year that a contingency exam day has been implemented by the exam boards for all GCSE and GCE examinations ‘should sustained national or local disruption arise during the June 2019 examination series’. The date set aside as the contingency day is Wednesday 26 June 2019. With this in mind, please can all parents/carers make a note of the new reserve exam date. The school has no power to support any absence related to holidays taken if an exam is rearranged on this date. If you are planning to arrange a summer holiday next year, please ensure you do this after 26 June 2019.

An Information Evening for Year 11 will take place on Thursday 25 October 2018, followed by a Curriculum Information evening for Year 10 on Wednesday 7 November 2018 and a Revision/Study Skills evening for Year 11 parents/carers will be held on Thursday 7 March 2019. Further information will be issued nearer the time.
Electronic payments for school trips and events In order to keep school administration costs to a minimum, from September 2018 we will no longer be able to process any cash or cheque payments to the school. All payments for trips and events must be made via ParentPay. All parents/carers have access to use ParentPay and will have received a unique username and password to access the secure payment facility (www.parentpay.com). If you have forgotten your login details, please contact the Finance office. For parents/carers wishing to pay by cash this can still be done at local stores where there is a PayPoint logo. If you wish to use the PayPoint facility, please contact the Finance office first to generate a barcode to take with you (see school website/school office for a list of local stores). Please contact the Finance office if you require any further assistance.

Newsletter Information for Year 10 students studying GCSE Design & Technology GCSE Food, Preparation & Nutrition students The following two Collins GCSE revision and practice books are now available for our new GCSE courses: Collins GCSE AQA Design and Technology All-in-one Revision and Practice Collins GCSE Eduqas Food Preparation and Nutrition All-in-one Revision and Practice We believe they are well-written and a valuable resource. The books give students a range of methods of revising topics and practicing exam technique and questions. The books will be used regularly to support both class and homework. We strongly recommend the purchase of the relevant titles for your child at the discounted cost of £3.99 each, payable through the school Parent Pay system. Students studying both subjects can order both copies. The books will be distributed in September at the start of their course, through the department and the relevant class teacher. Year 6 open afternoon and evening event Wednesday 19 September 2018 We warmly invite parents/carers and students in year 6 who would like to join us next year, in September 2019, to attend our open afternoon and evening on Wednesday 19 September 2018. There will be the opportunity to see both sites during the working afternoon with students taught in their timetabled lessons. In the evening, at our lower school site (Starkholmes), you will have the opportunity to hear about our approach to education, ask questions, meet staff, participate in activities and have a guided tour.

Year 6 open afternoon and evening arrangements Open afternoon (Starkholmes and Lumsdale sites): Between 2.00pm and 4.00pm you will be able to tour either site to see our school at work (until the end of the school day at 3.30pm). You will see how we support students to achieve their potential by providing a caring and varied learning environment.
Open evening at Starkholmes: Our open evening will help enable you to make an informed decision regarding your child’s progression to secondary school, ahead of the deadline of 31 October for submitting your application. Upon arrival in the evening a prospectus, detailing information about the school and a programme for the evening will be available. During the evening you will be able to meet staff, ask questions and join guided tours around lower site to see a variety of activities taking place. There will be two identical talks taking place in the evening at 6.30pm and 7.30pm for parents/carers to attend. These will be run by Mr Rodgers (Associate Assistant Headteacher at lower school) and Mrs Redhead & Mrs Hollinrake (joint Heads of Year 7). There will be an opportunity to meet Mr Marsh (Headteacher) who will be available to answer any questions you may have.
Further information on Highfields School: If you are unable to attend the open afternoon/evening and would like a prospectus and guide to Highfields or to arrange a visit, please contact school on 01629 584020 and we will be happy to organise this for you. Our website has a wealth of information available and provides an excellent flavour of our school. Newsletter Trip to Munich In July 25 students from years 10, 11 and 12 (accompanied by Mrs Andrews, Mrs Bowen and new member of the MFL department, Mr Roberts) visited Munich for five days to enhance their cultural and linguistic German knowledge. Two afternoons were spent at language school with teachers who conducted the whole sessions exclusively in German - English was completely 'verboten'! The rest of the time was spent exploring Munich thoroughly - a three and a half hour guided walking tour (in 30+ degree temperatures!), a tour of the famous Allianz Arena stadium, and a LONG walk through the 1972 Olympic Park to have a browse around BMW World. We also spent a sobering day at Dachau Concentration Memorial site and cheered ourselves up with a typical Bavarian meal out in the evening. Mrs Andrews wouldn't let anyone leave Germany without having the chance to sample proper Kaffee und Kuchen, which with a choice of over 20 cakes and different types of coffee and hot chocolate, took a good portion of the last afternoon before having to return home on the evening of Sunday 22 July.

Newsletter Library News Reading Challenge Lower school students took part in a year-long reading challenge, reading an amazing 3,260 books since September. Supported by local steel company, Twiggs, the reading challenge introduces students to new books and authors and improves their vocabulary skills. Recent research by the Oxford University Press across 840 secondary schools revealed that 43% of eleven-year-olds in the UK have limited vocabulary and simply do not know enough words to fulfil their potential at secondary school. “Reading exposes students to new words. It is a fantastic way to increase vocabulary, and that’s why we place so much importance on reading at Highfields, especially for younger students. If students are literally stuck for words it limits their ability to understand, to learn and to be creative. The word gap is something we’re determined to address and encouraging reading is one of the best ways to do this” explains Deputy Headteacher, Peter Cole. Students in the two classes that read the most books were rewarded with an afternoon of cakes, drinks and games in the school library and were presented with the Twigg’s Trophy by David Allen, Director of Twiggs. “We are delighted to support the initiative at Highfields to get students reading. Good literacy skills are essential in today’s job market. Poor reading and writing skills will hold you back at every stage of your life – and especially when it comes to finding employment. Today’s employers look for employees who can communicate – speaking and listening are critical, and reading is where it all starts” said Mr Allen. “We are so grateful for the support we’ve received from Twiggs. Competing for a trophy made the challenge much more exciting for the students, and thanks to funding from Twigg’s we’ve been able to stock the library with some fantastic new books that have been extremely popular. National headlines might suggest that young people don’t read books for pleasure, but at Highfields that is absolutely not the case!” said School Librarian, Louise Robinson.
Patron of Reading After a wonderful year as our Patron of Reading, Lucy Adlington is now moving on. We send our thanks to her for all the inspiration and promotion of reading she has given to students at Highfields. Lucy’s last event was a history fiction challenge for upper site book club students. She challenged the students to come up with a period in time they’d enjoy reading a teenage novel about, and why they’d choose that time. Book club students brainstormed for ideas which included child labour in Cromford Mills because it’s so local and the fall of the Berlin War because it’s more contemporary. The final winner was the fall of the USSR and was chosen because it’s within living memory and also because none of the students have yet read a teenage fiction book on the event. Let’s hope this inspires Lucy Adlington to write her next book and Highfields students will then see their ideas in print.

Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiries (reception) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is reception. Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. School to home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ assessment profiles/data sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
