You know you can’t believe everything you’ve seen on the internet, right?

Safer Internet Day 2025 is on 11 th February. The theme for this year is: “Too good to be true? Protecting yourself and others from scams online.”

There have been many reports of people being scammed online. Stories often follow a similar pattern. “Are online scams always too good to be true?”

Type forecasting 35% of young people, and 50% of over-16s, have experienced a scam online. It’s not only young people, 42% of British adults have been targeted by scammers in the past 12 months. Scams are hitting the headlines for all the wrong reasons. 2025 will bring its own fresh challenges.

The password, email address and other identifying details will have been changed to prevent you logging in. You will need to pay to get the account back. Of course, there’s no guarantee sending money will get you it back anyway.

Criminals use platforms like Facebook Marketplace, Instagram, or TikTok to advertise and sell products that do not exist. Fake profiles offer popular goods (often using stolen photos from real sellers) at great prices to lure victims in. Once payment is made, the promised goods never arrive, and the fake account disappears.

Targets are told that the images or videos will be sent to family, friends and classmates if they don't pay the scammers.

A money mule is someone whose bank account is used by criminals to transfer cash. As money moves between accounts, it can be harder for authorities to track. For example, a criminal may ask to place £1,000 into your account. Later on, they could ask you to transfer £900 back out, leaving you £100 in return. A recent survey found seven out of ten young people did not realise money muling could get you a criminal record.

Some people agree to money muling knowing what is going on. Other people could be tricked by people they trust, promises of a job or as an investment opportunity.

If someone famous is sliding into your DMs, you should know better.

You’re not that cool.

It’s really hard when they start off small and hook you in. It’s clearly too good to be true by the end, but you might not see it by then.

Not many people are giving you something for nothing. People are usually out for themselves.

When a scam is just believable enough it’s more likely to get us.

“You won £5!” is more tempting than “Click here for a million!”

A lot of scams play into fears. It’s not that they are too good to be true, it’s that they are too bad to be ignored.

If you believe everything good is a scam, you’ll miss out on real friendships and relationships.
