Newsletter Message from the headteacher As we approach the end of what has been a tumultuous year in the history of Highfields School I would like to thank you for your continued support. You have been supportive and cooperative. At times you have asked for clarification when it was needed, but any feedback or critical reflection has been presented thoughtfully and helpfully and this is all we can ask for. As a fellow parent trying to balance work and home-schooling, I know many of you facing a similar challenge will be exhausted. I feel sure that all of your efforts will have been worth it. In the newsletter we present our ‘Big 3’, the strategic plan for 2020-21. Naturally, this will be shaped to fit our circumstances as we continue to deal with the effects of this pandemic. Also in the newsletter you will see our draft plan for September return (we are constantly adding to safety measures). A number of schools have adopted models which limit students’ access to a wider curriculum. We feel that Highfields students need a broad and balanced curriculum more now than ever as they bounce back from lockdown and that this is fully supported by government guidance. We believe that our plan protects both students and staff health AND limits any further impact on learning and examination success. Each family will have a viewpoint on the best plan. My job is to take a strong lead and move forward. I know that I can count on your support. As previously advised in June, our risk assessment changes daily in line with local authority and national government guidance. However, if you wish to see the latest version please email jwheatcroft@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk We are currently evaluating our lockdown performance to celebrate strengths and figure out where we could improve. I cannot speak for all schools, but the evidence gathered so far suggests that many Highfields staff have pushed themselves to the limit during lockdown. Email data suggests that staff have often worked into the early hours to provide remote education and keep abreast of the increased number of e-communications required to run a school in the absence of physical meetings. I am thrilled that so many of you have contacted staff to thank them. The chair of governors has written to staff and I have tried to reflect my own thanks through our end of term assembly. I would like to wish you and your family a peaceful and restorative summer and we look forward, even more than usual, to seeing your children again in September. Warm regards, Andrew Marsh Headteacher

Newsletter Temporary Arrangements for September 2020 Re-opening This proposal is in line with the following guidance: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/actions-for-schools-during-the-coronavirusoutbreak/guidance-for-full-opening-schools
A.
Introduction
It is important to note that there is no school response to this pandemic which does NOT involve significant compromise and inconvenience for staff and students on a temporary basis. We have, however, sought a solution which maximises student learning, focuses staff workload on helping children to catch up and implements measures to control the spread of disease.
B.
Interpreting the guidance
The school notes that the guidance stresses that schools are expected to “Teach an ambitious and broad curriculum in all subjects from the start of the autumn term”. We further note that many control measures suggested by the guidance are to be ‘considered’ rather than implemented at the expense of ‘ambitious and broad curriculum’. Finally, we have noted that we are required by the guidance to reflect on: “Children’s ability to distance” [in our mainstream secondary school students are broadly able to do so] “The layout of the school” [we have far more transit routes and entry/exit options open to us than many schools - we also have two distinct zones in upper and lower site] “The feasibility of keeping distinct groups separate while offering a broad curriculum (especially at secondary)”
C.
Arrangement for September return
In line with the guidance we have decided on an arrangement in which: 1. 2. 3. 4.
Students in different year groups do not come into ‘close contact’ as defined by the guidance. This will allow us to respond in line with the guidance should staff or students test positive for Covid-19. Timetables will be temporarily adapted to reduce the number of lesson changeovers by half (i.e. we will have 3 x 100 minute lessons per day). All of this will be explained in greater detail when students return to school. Students will have access to subject specific classrooms (music, drama, science etc). This will allow all students, but especially those approaching examinations to catch up on the learning they have missed. Adults in the school will take oversight of their bases. For classroom staff, this means they can ensure that classrooms are sanitised between every lesson.
Safety is further addressed in this model as: 1.
A focus on enhanced hygiene and the central importance of regular handwashing and cleaning rituals will further reduce the risk of infection. Windows will be open in every classroom to ensure good ventilation and respiratory hygiene.

Newsletter 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
The reduction in the number of lessons will limit the number of books required by students which will mean that we can suspend the use of lockers until further notice to speed transit in corridors. Students and staff will use a robust and very clear one way system (follow the arrows - no exceptions) which will prevent most inter-year ‘close contact’. Slightly staggered starts/finishes of lessons, fewer than 50% of normal lesson changeovers and timed lunch slots will reduce corridor traffic by well over 50% (tutor periods will also be temporarily suspended). Year groups will each be assigned with a defined area as a year base, where break and social times will be spent. Lunches will be staggered sittings in the Wheeldon Hall/Bowler Hall with quick-run style boxed warm food/grab bags to speed up queuing/serving times. Assemblies, parents’ evenings and any other face to face events will be temporarily suspended. Any staff training or meeting will be socially distanced or online. The behaviour annex ratified by governors in June will ensure that students who deliberately undermine the safety of the Highfields community will be dealt with quickly and robustly (see excerpt at the end of this document).
No arrangement which is in line with this guidance will be without its drawbacks. However, the senior leadership team and the chair of governors feel very strongly that this approach is the best way to move forward. Please see the ‘walk through’ for families below which will help you prepare your child for their return to school. The risk assessment underpinning our plans is almost 50 pages long and is constantly changing. However, a copy can be requested from jwheatcroft@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk. There are many more elements of this plan which have not been included in this document, including our planned response in the event of community members testing positive for Covid-19. Any further questions from students will be addressed on your child’s first day in school. We thank all parents and carers in advance of their support for these robust temporary arrangements for September. A Marsh, Headteacher A Ellson, Chair of Governors July 2020

Issue 39: 17 July 2020
Newsletter ‘Walk-through’ of a school day in September for students and families Student and staff safety depends on each of us behaving responsibly. Highfields students have an excellent reputation for behaving with consideration for others. Governors have approved a special behaviour policy which allows the school to respond very quickly to students who undermine guidelines intended to keep students and staff safe. There are four golden rules: 1. Bring your own stationery 2. Follow the arrows and keep moving 3. Avoid students in other year groups 4. Wash your hands regularly Before coming to school When to return: Tuesday 1 September: training day for staff to prepare for your return: NO STUDENTS Wednesday 2 September: Years 7, 9 and 12 attend Thursday 3 September: all years attend If you or someone in your family has the symptoms of Covid-19 or has recently tested positive do not come into school until you have spoken to a year manager. Travelling to school: Derbyshire County Council has advised that families should try temporarily to organise travel to school which doesn’t involve buses. Any concerns about school travel should be directed towards private bus companies or Derbyshire County Council. If using buses, follow the current guidance regarding face masks, aim to socially distance on the bus and if you need to sit next to someone, sit next to a member of your household or someone in your year. Aim to face front. What to pack: It is particularly important that students have sufficient stationery equipment as you will not be allowed to handle others’ property. Pack only the books and equipment you need for the day. We have reduced the number of lessons you have daily and this will mean that you need fewer books in your bag. Lockers are temporarily suspended in September. We recommend that you pack a small bottle of hand sanitiser, wipes and moisturiser if regular handwashing affects your skin. Decide with your family whether you will be having packed lunch or school dinner. School dinners will be limited at first and arrangements to get students a school dinner may take longer than usual. Take snacks for break until you get used to the new routines. What to wear: Dress in school uniform as per school policy. Wear clothes which are warm enough and take a waterproof coat and, if you wish, an umbrella as many one way systems will take you outside. You may wish to wear a jumper beneath your blazer (Y7-10) as all classrooms will be very well ventilated. On the days you have PE, wear PE kit to school. Please ensure that you are in proper school PE uniform. When you arrive at school See the Covid-19 behaviour annex at the end of this document. Arrive at school between 8.15am and 8.40am. If you arrive before 8.15am you will be asked to wait in outside areas. When you arrive at school, take off any face mask your may have worn on the bus and bag it or bin it. If you have a specific condition which requires that you still wear a face mask, families can email lleverton@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk for an exemption.

Newsletter Keep your distance from others and FOLLOW THE ARROWS at all times. Remember that all unnecessary physical contact with others should be avoided. You should be at least one metre from other students wherever possible (this will not apply in classrooms) and TWO metres from staff. Year bases. When you are not in lessons you will be in year bases. These will be colour coded: Y7 = blue Y8 = red Y9 = yellow Y10 = green Y11= blue (same colour as Y7 but different site!) You will stay in these bases at break and lunchtime to reduce mixing between year groups. Sixth formers will be based in sixth form diner. YOU SHOULD NEVER, EVER STOP IN OTHER YEAR BASES - MOVE THROUGH THEM QUICKLY FOLLOWING THE ARROWS. Going to lessons Follow the arrows (even if it is a long way round) to your lesson. Face forwards and do not stop. Go in and sit down as instructed by the teacher. If the room is locked social distance wherever possible and queue quietly. Follow any instructions given to you by a member of staff. Sit where you are asked to and move when requested to do so. Respect the fact that staff are required to stay 2m away from you as much as they can. If there is a fire alarm get out of the building via the nearest exit. Then go to your outdoor court (used in breaktimes) If there is a GET IN STAY IN alarm (bursts of three lesson bells) get into an indoor area as soon as you can Ask politely if you need the toilet. The lessons are longer so staff will allow you to go one at a time. Wash your hands thoroughly when you visit the toilet. Breaktime Clean your area as required by your teacher. Leave period 2 as instructed by your teacher. Walk briskly to your year base and do not stop on the way. Use break to WASH YOUR HANDS. You need to stay in your year bases during break. We may be able to offer snacks for sale in your year base but just in case we can’t bring a snack for the first few days. Go to period 3 only when instructed by a member of staff. Lunchtime When you are dismissed from period 4 you should follow the arrows to your year base. From your year base you will be taken to lunch, or you can stay in your year base and eat a packed lunch. Home time When dismissed from lessons follow the arrows to the school exit which is most convenient for you. If using buses please queue as directed and face forward. Wear a face mask on public transport in line with current guidance. There will be no after school clubs at the beginning of term unless you are told otherwise. Homework will depend on your teachers but will temporarily make as much use as possible of SMHW rather than requiring books to be handed over. If you feel unwell during the school day Please report to the nearest adult who will take appropriate action which will often include moving you to a quiet space and contacting parents/carers.

Newsletter COVID-19 Annex to School Behaviour Policy In light of the need for students to behave safely and in line with new guidance when they return to school, this annex highlights keys areas that need taking into consideration during September reopening. We are determined to ensure that student and staff morale and motivation in this difficult time will be supported by calm, considerate and kind behaviour from all members of the school community. This annex is in addition to (not instead of) all normal expectations covered in school behaviour policy.
Students will receive clear instructions regarding changes to procedures during this re-opening period and will be required to follow all guidance and instructions respectfully and responsibly.
Students (and their parents/carers) are expected to follow government guidelines on getting to and from school safely.
Handwashing and sanitising of hands will become a very regular part of the school day and will be encouraged at every opportunity. Students will be encouraged to ‘catch it, bin it, kill it’ regarding sneezing, coughing and the tissues and disposal of them. Touching of the mouth, nose and eyes should be avoided as much as possible.
All students will have their own equipment i.e. pencils, pens etc. There will be no sharing of equipment.
Breaks will be slightly staggered and students will only be permitted to use designated areas of the school. This will be made clear to them and they should not move to other areas of the school under any circumstances.
Students must walk directly to the classroom they have been assigned following the one way system. To reduce contamination students must enter ONLY their assigned classrooms for the day OR their year bases. Students will be expected to sit in their seat as per the seating plan from the classroom teacher. Students must follow instructions during lessons.
Failure to follow instructions in line with government guidance will result in a student being issued a consequence which will range from a verbal reminder to a fixed term exclusion depending on the seriousness of the incident and the extent to which the behaviour is repeated.
Deliberate coughing, spitting or any other behaviour which endangers the health and safety of other students or staff will be grounds for fixed term exclusion. The usual processes will apply.
All staff will be given clear guidance on how to deal with students who are posing a health and safety risk. Senior staff will be available to support in these matters.
Note that behaviours, particularly if they are repeated, which may result in a fixed term exclusion include the following (the list is not exhaustive): refusing to sanitise or wash hands failure to follow a reasonable request from a member of staff wearing a face covering without permission or inappropriately not moving directly to the allocated classroom deliberately making physical contact, or attempting to make physical contact, with another person or failing to keep the required distance. deliberately and unnecessarily performing actions associated with symptoms of Covid-19, for example but not limited to, coughing and/or sneezing failure to follow reasonable requests from members of staff that are to ensure the safety and wellbeing of others not attempting to cover the nose and mouth with a tissue or arm when coughing and/or sneezing.

Newsletter Big 3 Key Priorities: Highfields School 2020-21
Project No.
Title/ description of project Each project leader is responsible for the keeping of records around design/ ADKAR/ timelines/ impact
1a
Operation ‘Need to Know’: Curriculum intent and implementation will inspire students and its design will enable them to retain and retrieve important powerful knowledge about the world around them. Subject leaders and their teams will adapt the curriculum to address the effects of Covid-19 based learning loss. Any catch up funding will be used very effectively to support those in most need.
1b 1c 2a
Operation ‘Moving Target’: Teachers will embed prior foci (questioning/ actionable NS/seating for SARU/strong start etc) and embed ‘new’ strategies in both online and in-school provision with particular adaptation for SARU.
2b 2c 3
Operation ‘Word Power’: School structures including lesson design, Accelerated Reader and DEAR will result in more children being avid readers and able to communicate using effective techniques and appropriate specialist terminology. Operation ‘Safe and Well’: School care systems combine to protect children’s emotional and physical health and empower them to take on the specific challenges they face. WE ARE HIGHFIELDS (WAH) pledges pilot project work ensures that ALL students including vulnerable groups enjoy a range of enrichment activities and challenges during their Highfields School career. Opportunities such as BHM are celebrated. Operation ‘Happy and Inclusive’: Students’ behaviour and approach to learning will further promote an ethos in which students can learn and feel happy and included. Consistent tutor times and assemblies will offer opportunities for spiritual and moral reflection and growth. Screen time on both sites will be limited to encourage social interaction, physical exercise and extra-curricular activity. Operation ‘Every Lesson Counts’: Overall attendance approaches 96% because sophisticated and carefully targeted systems result in students being where they belong in term time; in school, with their friends, learning. (Appropriate strategies support any students who are shielding or self-isolating) Operation ‘Every Resource Counts’: Staff workload/ CPD and support (esp. post absence) is a constant focus so that staff (esp teacher) health supports continuity of classroom learning. Income is maximised through increased student recruitment into Y7/12 and through other revenue streams.
Key: SARU - students at risk of underachieving NS - next steps PSHE - personal, social, and health education CPD - continued professional development Note: This is an illustrative excerpt. The full plan includes a range of success criteria based on qualitative and quantitative evidence.
Notes regarding Covid-19: *This entire plan will need to adapt in line with emerging government policy around Covid19. The school may need to develop an even stronger online offer which registers children and ensures their engagement. Timetables, arrangements and schedules must be adaptable at short notice. Subject leaders and their teams will need to adapt teaching to reduce impact of Covid-19 on students’ achievement.

Newsletter Messages for parents/carers A Level & GCSE Results Days Thank you to the Y11 and Y13 students responding to our survey on the collection of exam results in the summer. As you are aware, due to the current situation and social distancing restrictions in place we are unable to run results days as normal this year. A small number of pastoral, exam office and senior staff will be available in school to hand out results on Thursday 13 August (A Level) and Thursday 20 August (GCSE) to those requesting this. For students choosing to receive their results by email, we are aiming to send them all by 9am on the relevant results day. We will also provide details of how to contact the sixth form team to make an appointment if any additional support is required with University/Clearing or A Level option choices. Students who would like to come into school to get their results will be invited in small groups and given a specific time slot. We will be in touch with students and parents/carers nearer the time, to confirm arrangements.
School Transport Update If you have not already done so, please can all parents/carers complete the survey issued from Derbyshire County Council so they can look at what can realistically be done to get students to and from school in the new academic year. By completing this survey the council will be able to plan for a September return. The survey asks about how your children got from home to school before the coronavirus pandemic, and how you think they will get to school in September. It also asks how your children could be encouraged to walk, cycle or scoot to school. The survey can be accessed below and closes on 31 July 2020: https://wh1.snapsurveys.com/s.asp?k=159431407337 We are in regular contact with Derbyshire County Council’s School Transport department and will inform all parents/carers on what the transport arrangements will be for the new school year later in the summer.
Summer optional activities and challenges We have put together some optional activities and challenges for students to work on if they wish to over summer. There are some exciting things to do over the break with a huge range of interesting and unusual things to try. Hopefully there is something for everyone. The activities have been emailed home and will be available on the school website on Monday. There are ideas from many subjects to make each day a bit different.

Newsletter Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Volunteer Hours Across the Central England region an incredible 596,804 hours of volunteering have been carried out by participants. This has provided £2,596,097 worth of social value back into local communities across the region. Volunteering provides vital support to local communities across the country, it also provides young people with the opportunity to take part in new experiences, develop new skills and feel a sense of pride in supporting the communities that they live in. We are proud of the commitment and dedication of our Duke of Edinburgh’s Award students who have volunteered in our local community. In total Highfields students who achieved their volunteering section between 1 April 2019 and 31 March 2020 donated 494 hours of voluntary service to the local community and the social value of these hours is £2,148 (based on the minimum wage for under 18’s of £4.35 multiplied by the total amount of volunteering hours conducted). This is based on students completing the minimum one hour weekly time commitment over the minimum duration for their Bronze, Silver or Gold Awards – well done!

Newsletter Shout Outs! Staff have been sending in messages to let school know about the good work students are producing while they are learning from home and we wanted to share these with you.

Newsletter Parents/carers of current year 6 students Year 6 Transition Programme We would like to take the opportunity to say thank you so much for engaging in our virtual transition process this year. We still remain so disappointed that we have not been able to get to know you all in our usual way over the past few weeks. We do hope that the information we have provided has helped to make you all feel a little more comfortable about making the transition to Highfields in September. We hope that you all have a safe and restful summer break, after what has been an incredibly strange few months for us all. We are very much looking forward to meeting you all on that first day in September. Remember, you will have the whole of lower school to yourself and you will spend the entire day with your form class, getting to know your tutor and new class mates. A letter will be sent to you during the summer to activate your Parentpay account. We would advise you to pay for ‘activity day’ and locker key as soon as possible after this has been activated. Please add money to the school dinners account on 1 September ready for your child’s first day. Again, thank you for your continued support throughout this whole transition process. If you do have any further questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch directly with Mrs Green via email tgreen@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk as this email address will be monitored once a week. Please do not message the school system with your questions as this will not be monitored in the holidays Please keep an eye on the school website during the holidays in case there is an update on the school response to government guidance. Stay safe everyone and we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday 2 September! Year 7 Team

Newsletter Year 6 parents - introduction to Highfields We were sorry that we were not able to meet you on our year 6 parents evening. This would have been an opportunity for you to meet your child's form tutor and the year 7 pastoral team in person and to share any concerns you may have. Instead, Mrs Green has emailed out a presentation that is based on what you would have received on the evening - we hope you found this helpful. During the year 6 evening you would have had the opportunity to meet our Headteacher, Mr Marsh, and he would have welcomed you all to our school. Mr Marsh’s welcome message has been emailed out to families to watch ready for September. Please let Mrs Green know if you have not received it.
SEND department Mrs Green has sent out some useful information from our SEND department. If you have any queries or concerns regarding funding/additional support for your child, please email Mrs Leverton (lleverton@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk). Students who have a keyworker in September have been notified and further details provided.
Map and form room information Students now know the friend from their friendship card and so will have a familiar face in their class in September. However, it is also incredibly important to us at Highfields that students build new friendships, join clubs and have many positive relationships in school. This will enable them to develop into a resilient Highfields student. Our club list is published by 1 October and we encourage all year 7 students to join at least one club to make new friends and learn new skills. Please remember that classes are for learning and seating plans are frequently changed in order to encourage your child to develop new relationships and encourage new ideas in the classroom. In each lesson there may be a different seating plan, so your child will learn to work with lots of different people. We hope that by November they will know all their new classmates really well. There is plenty of time at break and lunchtime for students to meet and socialise with friends and attend clubs with them or even do homework together in homework club. We issued an email notifying you of your child’s form tutor along with a profile of them to look at. They are very much looking forward to meeting students in their form on 2 September. There was also a map attached showing where their form room is to help them get to know Starkholmes before September. Please reassure your son/daughter that staff will be there on the first day to guide them to their room and around school in the first few weeks of term. If you have not received information on your child’s tutor or form room please contact Mrs Green.

Newsletter School Library You should also be in receipt of information on our library and Accelerated Reading Programme. Mrs Robinson, our Library Manager, has completed a profile for you to read and sent a link to a survey so she can help support students in September.
Dietary requirements Year 6 families were sent two forms about dietary requirements for your child in school and at Lea Green. For Lea Green it is essential that you confirm if your child is vegetarian or if there are any allergies or special requirements. For Derbyshire County Council it is essential that you confirm if your child has any allergies or special requirements if you wish for your child to eat in school and to enable them to cater for this. Please email tgreen@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk with the special diets form asap to allow her to contact Lea Green before the end of term with all the relevant information. If you require a medical diet form for your child to eat in school, please also contact Mrs Green.
Y6 Additional consent forms Y6 parents/carers should all have received the Cat 1 Blank Consent form, Social Media Use Agreement and GDPR consent form to complete along with related correspondence. If you have not received these please contact Mrs Green. We do appreciate your support in completing these forms on time and have tried to stagger the information we have issued to allow you time to do this. We also enclosed the answers to the Information Booklet quiz that we sent out and we hope that this booklet has helped them learn more about Highfields. Please return the anagram activity if your child would like to take part in the competition for most words.
Year 6 ‘hand’ activity Mrs Green has emailed out the hand activity task instructions that we would really like students to do. You can print and colour in with your personal design and then scan back in to tgreen@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk Or if your child is a computer whizz and can do this online to add their own images/colours from the computer, then you can send back to the same email address. If you are not able to send your hand electronically it would be really good if you could post it back to school so that we can get our poster ready for September. We want to be able to make a new mane for our lion with your hands so you know we are all part of Highfields.

Newsletter Year 7 booklet, map quiz and anagram challenge You will be in receipt of our new Y7 booklet for you to have a look through along with a quiz for you to see how well you have read it! There was also a map of the school with an example timetable along with a further quiz. Hopefully, this has helped you learn your way virtually around the school and familiarise yourself with the layout before September – remember you can revisit the virtual tour we issued previously to you to help. Answers to the quiz were sent to parents/carers on 26 June - we hope you had fun and enjoyed doing the activities. The Y7 booklet is also available on our website: http://www.highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk/pdfs/InfoPDFs/Y6Booklet2020.pdf
Derbyshire County Council School Dinners Families have been emailed information regarding school dinners, including a current price list and items available to purchase (this is also displayed near the kitchen area for students to view while queuing), to give families an idea of the range of food available. Each week the latest menu is also included in the school newsletter. A medical diet letter was also included in the communication. Please contact Mrs Green via email (tgreen@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk) if you require the medical diet form to ensure that DCC are able to cater for your child's school dinner.
Year 7 Activity Day Induction Programme We issued information on our year 7 activity day which is part of our induction programme and included a leaflet about this exciting day. There are two forms to be completed and returned. The price includes a year group t-shirt to wear on the day. We would advise you pay for this as soon as our ParentPay information is sent to you (you should receive this by August). ParentPay gives you access to pay for trips and meals on line. We are hopeful that this event will be able to go ahead. We walk there or walk back depending on the form group your child is in (we will let you have further information in September). Parents/carers either drop off or collect so there is no concern about social distancing. Lea Green have confirmed that they should be able to adapt the day to comply with this as well. If your child has any special requirements as indicated on the form Special Diets 2020 please complete and return this to tgreen@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk

Newsletter ‘Pyramid worries’ and ‘all about me’ Year 6 families will have received an email with two attachments – ‘pyramid worries’ and an ‘all about me’ activity. Thank you for your ‘All about Me’ documents. We have enjoyed reading them and getting to know you. We have shared this information with your form tutor. The top concerns from you all were getting lost/bullying and too much homework and we will ensure that we reassure you about these in September and pass on to our Theatre Company. We intend to give you a really good tour of the school in September so please do not worry about getting lost.
Geography on a plate activity Thank you to year 6s for your ‘geography on a plate’ activities. We featured some of the ones we received in recent newsletters - well done to you all! This activity was to replicate what year 6 students would have done if the usual visit to Highfields had taken place as part of the ‘taster lesson’.
Pastoral profiles You will all be in receipt of the pastoral profiles we have emailed out. We hope this helps you start to remember names and put them to the faces of our year 7 team.
Starkholmes virtual tour Our transition programme started with a virtual tour of our lower school site at Starkholmes to help our soon to be new year 7 students familiarise themselves with Highfields.
Year 6 Transition timetable Our transition programme of information is now complete and you should have all received the information you need to prepare students for their learning journey at Highfields. From September, there will be some very focused ‘year 7’ time and activities will depend on what has been possible throughout the summer term. We will keep in touch to make sure students have the best possible transition experience in this climate. Our priority remains that students feel part of our community and to allay as many worries

Year 7 PowerPoints and student magazine Some of our year 7 students have put together PowerPoints for students they know in primary schools moving up to Highfields in September and these are being emailed out separately. We hope year 6 students will find it useful to know there will be familiar faces of students who were previously at their primaries to help them when they join us in the new academic year. Our current year 7 students have also been working hard and put together a magazine for year 6 students. It has been compiled by them to give a little insight into what it is like at Highfields in advance of students starting with us in September – see link below: http://www.highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk/news/269.html
September 2020 – Transport to school for year 6 parents/carers The link below is to the Derbyshire County Council website that aims to answer any questions you may have on school transport in September 2020: https://derbyshire.gov.uk/education/schools/your-child-at-school/travel/school-transport.aspx The site provides information on the options available for travelling between school and home, including details on free bus travel, timetables and DCC plans and policies for school transport. We are waiting on final information for the start of September regarding transport arrangements in light of the Covid-19 outbreak. Once government guidance has been interpreted we will issue transport details out to families as soon as confirmation has been received. Please ensure you have completed the home to school transport survey emailed out this week.
We look forward to meeting you and your child soon, but if you have any queries in the meantime, please do not hesitate to get in touch with Mrs Green in the first instance: tgreen@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk

Highfields Netball Miss Tabbenor wanted to say a huge well done to the year 7 & 8 netball team. You all have improved so much over the short time training together this year, the determination you all had going into each game, the consistency of turning up each week to practice and supporting one another so you can all be the best you can, was incredible to see each week. The year 7 team - you amazed me on the resilience you had from starting with a few defeats to becoming unbeatable yourselves, a special mention to Phoebe R the captain of this team for always encouraging your team to get the win in each game. The Year 8’s - well, first of all what a team you are! From only losing one game from September until March is astonishing, you have such a great team bond and the encouragement and fight you show on court is a pleasure to watch, a special mention to Freya R the captain of this team for always being so supportive of your team and encouraging your team to be the best that they can be. Unfortunately we didn’t get to show our great work at the County Tournament this year, but we did have a great result in the Local Netball Tournament finishing 2nd place and losing the final by 1 goal. If you didn’t manage to catch yourselves on Sky sports during the ‘National Sports Week’ your Netball Video was showed, which is a great achievement and you all should be so proud of yourselves for making it on to Sky Sports. I am so incredibly proud of you all and all your achievements and you make Highfields proud, I can’t wait to hopefully see you all back on the court in September, but until then I hope you have a great Summer holidays and keep safe. The nation is rightly proud of the contributions of key workers and we now want to recognise and celebrate the efforts of employees in this sector through an art competition for children and young people. Children and young people, aged between four and 16, are being encouraged to capture through art what our health and social care heroes mean to them. The competition is free to enter and participants have until Friday 31 July 2020 to submit their works of inspirational art. Any style of art is being accepted with entries being submitted via a digital photo emailed to dhcft.joinedupcareers@nhs.net There are a number of prizes available and the winner will have their artwork showcased in a future campaign to recruit to the health and social care workforce. Susan Spray, programme lead for Joined Up Careers Derbyshire: “We’re encouraging children and
young people to get creative – drawing, painting, photography, sculpture or whatever artform they enjoy most. We will judge the entries via a submitted photo of whatever they produce. We think this is a great chance to celebrate the work of everyone in health and social care and give children and young people in Derby and Derbyshire a focus for their lockdown artistic efforts.” Joined Up Careers Derbyshire is a partnership of NHS, local authorities and the voluntary and community sector, promoting recruitment and retention in the health and social care workforce. Further information and full competition terms and conditions are available on the Joined Up Careers Derbyshire website: www.joinedupcareers.co.uk/about/art-competition Updates on the competition will be made on the social media pages of Joined Up Careers Derbyshire including Twitter at @JUCareersD using #CareersArt

Newsletter Keeping Highfields reading: how to access free books It’s really important that students keep up with reading whilst school is closed. The recommended reading time is at least 20 minutes every day. We recognise that at the current time it may be difficult to find books to read. Books are still readily available to buy online from Amazon, Waterstones and other bookshops, but there are also a growing number of sources of free books. The situation is changing every day, with publishers starting to offer access to more and more books, so this advice will be regularly updated. At the current time, the best sources of free reading material are:
Kindle Unlimited If you are an Amazon Prime member you can sign up for two free months of KindleUnlimited. You will need to download the Kindle app on any device and then you’ll have unlimited access to books, magazines and audiobooks on the Kindle store. After the free trial period there’s a charge of £7.99 per month, but you can cancel your subscription at any time. Visit https://www.amazon.co.uk/kindledbs/hz/subscribe/ku?shoppingPortalEnabled=true for more information. If you don’t want to sign up to KindleUnlimited you can still download some very inexpensive – or even free - titles from the Amazon Kindle store. Have a browse through the “Children’s” and “Teen & Young Adult” sections. There are some good offers. For instance, the first and second titles in the very popular “Cogheart” series are completely free at the moment. Free titles seem to be added daily, so it’s worth having a regular check of the website.
Audible Amazon Audible has made all its audiobooks available free of charge if you start a 30-day free trial subscription with them. Visit http://www.audible.co.uk
Derbyshire Libraries You can read thousands of e-books for free through Derbyshire Libraries. Even if you haven’t yet joined the library, you can join online and download e-books immediately. If you are already a member go to https://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/leisure/libraries/ebooks/ebooksemagazines-and-eaudiobooks.aspx and follow the instructions to start browsing through the books available. If you aren’t yet a member of a Derbyshire library go to: https://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/leisure/libraries/using-your-library/joining/joining-the-library.aspx and click on “Join the Library”. Fill in all your details and you’ll be given a temporary username and password that you can use until you get a membership card. So you’ll be able to start downloading books straight away. Happy reading! Updates to follow as and when other sources of reading material become available.

Study Boost Loughborough University Loughborough University have set up ‘study boost’ - a free service that aims to support you with the challenging topics you may be facing in core GCSE subjects: biology, chemistry, physics, maths, English language and literature. All you need to do to is complete the short form with the question that you need help with. One of the university’s study boost mentors will then record a presentation detailing how to solve a similar problem, as well as providing hints and tips as to how to approach the specific topic. Please note that whilst the mentors aim to provide as much help as they can, they cannot complete specific homework or coursework assignments. You may also wish to review our selection of presentations for further subject advice and guidance. Mentors will aim to respond to your question within one working day. You will be notified, via the email you supply on the form, that your answer is ready. Online Safety During the school closures our children will be spending more time online and we are aware that not all parents/carers may be as engaged as they usually are as they try to balance work deadlines with childcare. Screen time is inevitably going to win at some point for most families and it is more important than before that we remind parents/carers of the key role in helping to keep children safe. The YouTube clip below is to remind parents/carers of the importance of engaging with their child/s online lives during this time. Additional clips will be released and cover issues such as parental controls (and how to set them), which apps have seen a surge in popularity since the pandemic and age specific information aimed at 0-5's, 6 - 11's and over 11's. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhLWwQ4Ay5s Traci Good, Director of E Safety Training Ltd Safeguarding, Derbyshire County Council

Newsletter Highfields Uniform - September 2020 As you are aware we are launching the Highfields School blazer in September 2020. This remains our intention as this was in place before the closure of school was announced and we have made a commitment to our suppliers. Both Trutex Direct and Kick Off Sport have now begun stocking the blazer alongside the recommended skirt and school tie. Please refer to the detailed information contained in the Highfields uniform code available on our website (see link below) to ensure your son/daughter has the correct uniform ready for the new academic year. We are liaising with Kick Off Sport regarding the reopening of their store, as there will be a limit of a maximum of two people in the shop at any one time and we are aware that new starters or families needing to purchase a significant amount of uniform may prefer to do this in person. We are working with Kick Off to see how we can support them with social distancing measures during the Coivd-19 pandemic. Orders can be placed on line both with Trutex Direct (https://www.trutex.com/) and Kick Off Sport (https://www.kickoffsport.co.uk/highfields-uniform.html) if you know the size and items required without the need to visit a store directly. To assist with purchasing the right sizes Kick Off Sport have produced a size guide (see link below). Both suppliers have sufficient stocks of uniform to ensure everyone is accommodated for September. We are looking to help support families to purchase uniform who may be struggling financially due to the coronavirus crisis. If you wish to apply for financial support please complete the application (http://www.highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk/pdfs/InfoPDFs/SchoolUniformApplicationGrant.doc) and send along with any supporting documentation to finance@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk to check eligibility. With this in mind we have taken the decision to return to school one day earlier for the start of the new academic year (Tuesday 1 September 2020) and finish the autumn term one day earlier (Thursday 17 December 2020). This is to ensure a smooth start to the academic year rather than students starting back with a staggered start on Thursday or Friday. The start of the 2020-21 academic year is as follows (subject to the latest government advice):
Tuesday 1 September 2020 - Staff will return to school on Tuesday that will be designated as an INSET day (no students in school). Wednesday 2 September 2020 – students in years 7, 9 and 12 only return to school Thursday 3 September 2020 – all students return to school
