Newsletter Message from the headteacher As you know I like to visit a number of lessons every week (my target is three daily). I do this for a number of reasons. Firstly, I am naturally curious about what children are learning about. Secondly, I like to check that our students are working cooperatively with teachers. Thirdly, I like to share positives and, very occasionally, spot something which will inform our training strategy. Occasionally, however, I just go along because I really love watching a professional at the top of their game. I happened across just such a person in a year 8 lesson where the students were learning about nth terms. What was slightly mesmerising was the way in which the teacher handled questions. Occasionally she would use a question to bring in a student who was looking confused. In these cases the student generally didn’t have their hand up but she asked anyway. On other occasions she would ask a very challenging question which perhaps only the children who were securely grasping this topic were able to answer. This time she choose a child with their hand up. When the student had provided a satisfying response to this question the teacher would revisit the confused student to ensure that this information had been understood by them. Throughout the lesson, despite the robust and challenging atmosphere, children clearly felt cared for, safe and valued. If all teachers, including me, were this good all the time we would be home and dry. I went straight from this lesson into the febrile atmosphere of the UK Maths Trust (UKMT) challenge. This is where our very strongest mathematicians go up against the best in the country. These students were in years 7 and 8, but as you can see from the example below the questions they offer are far from straightforward. Based on the results of this test only a tiny proportion of students will progress to the Junior Olympiad later this year. I am told by the teacher that a Highfields student may, this year, be included in this elite group.

Talking of numbers, back in August the Derbyshire Times correctly reported that our school had failed to provide a balanced budget. We rectified this and are currently submitting a balanced budget which shows that we will, against the odds, carry forward a very small surplus into the next financial year. This is a hollow victory because a) we will need to make further savings to avoid a significant deficit within two years and b) we have only achieved savings thus far by making cuts. These cuts include, for example, paring back curriculum coverage which in turn means that when a teacher becomes ill there is rarely any spare capacity to allow for a specialist to cover the absence. All English schools face the same challenge, but this doesn’t make this issue any easier to deal with. I am sorry that this newsletter has ended a little gloomily. Next week I will try to think of something far more upbeat with which to finish. By the way - the answer is E 50. I worked that out myself (I promise) but could not resist checking it with a mathematician just in case I was about to make a massive fool of myself. A Marsh Headteacher

Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Reminder - year 11 important dates The exam season is already under way and we are very proud of the way in which so many of our students have approached the practical and oral exams already taken. Our Easter break is very late this year, with us returning to school on Monday 29 April, just two weeks before the final exams begin. 

Monday 29 April – Friday 10 May: Normal lessons continue – the last two weeks of the standard timetable before final exams begin.

Monday 13 May: Formal exams in the sports hall begin. Students need to be at the exam room a minimum of 15 minutes before the exam.

Monday 13 May-Friday 24 May: Normal lessons will continue when students are not in exams. The timetable will also be supplemented with pre-exam ‘booster sessions’. These will take place close to each exam and provide students with final reminders and tips. They do not replace final revision but help to supplement it. Booster timetables will be published shortly. Until Friday 24 May all students will be expected to be in lessons, boosters, or exams. Our formal timetabled lessons will end on Friday 24 May.

From Monday 3 June: On return from half term students will be expected to attend pre-exam booster sessions and exams only. We still expect full and correct school uniform throughout this period.

Year 11 final assembly will be on 14 June (periods 3 and 4) in the Wheeldon Hall.

Exams finish on 19 June 2019. All students must ensure that they are available to sit exams up to and including Wednesday 26 June. This is the exam contingency day set by exam boards, in case one or more exams needs to be rearranged due to national or local disruption.

Prom, hoodies and yearbook deadlines:   

1 May – deadline for order and payment of yearbook, after this date there will be no more opportunities to order a yearbook 3 May - deadline for Prom payment and consent slip 10 May - deadline for hoody order and payment

We wish our fantastic students every success in the forthcoming exams. We are here to support throughout the final stage and look forward to celebrating some fabulous results in August. Thank you to parents/carers for your support and partnership.

Today, Friday 3 May, our year 12 geography students are braving the elements on the Holderness coastline, accompanied by Mrs Cruise and Mrs Bonner, to better understand the factors and processes that shape one of Europe’s most vulnerable coastlines. Here they are surveying the beach profile; they are a great team and this image exemplifies their fabulous team skills.

Newsletter Sports Leaders News Sports leaders annual awards evening 2019 The guest of honour for our sports leaders awards evening held on 11 April was GB badminton player, Anthony Clark, who gave us a very inspiring message of his life’s journey, the support of family and the qualities of character he believes in. We were also joined by Sports Leaders UK Development Officer, Craig Kitchener; Rachel Kemp from Active Derbyshire and Rural Derbyshire SSP School Games Organiser, Janice Price. Messages of support came from Kerryn Wise (Head of Dance at Highfields until August 2018) who was unable to attend due to a dance conference in Wales. Young leaders from years 6 - 13 were joined by family in support. It was brilliant to see Mrs Peat, our fencing coach, who has inspired our year 8 in curriculum PE this academic year and Stuart Rudkin, Derbyshire Cricket coach. I am always thankful for the support of governors at this event too, plus staff from our feeder primary schools who support the Sports Leadership Academy in so many ways. Ella from year 13 set a fantastic tone for the evening giving us 30 mins of live piano music as guests were arriving, along with year 11 GCSE photography students Olivia and Mollee who were capturing images from the evening. Our brilliant PE apprentices, Mr Molyneux, Miss Tabbenor, Mr Hill and Mr Edenbrow were joined by one of last year’s qualifying apprentices, Miss Spencer, and were on hand to support Mrs Turner and myself in the proceedings for the evening. Mr Marsh welcomed guests, followed by an address from Mrs Allen highlighting the status achieved during the academic year of East Midlands and Humberside Sports Leadership Academy of the Year and the fact we finished in the top 6 nationally. This was followed by a talk from our senior ambassadors, Harry (year 13) and Alisa (year 12) who waxed lyrical about the benefits of the sports leadership pathway, opportunities at school and what it has meant to them. There were then 15 award categories for the year groups 6-13, plus awards for Voice of Sport, officials awards and the PE and school sport apprenticeship awards. Jill Eaton and Jo Poutney, CEOs of Sporting Futures apprenticeships were unable to join us from Stevenage, but had written a piece for the programme …

Sporting Futures Training continues to work in close partnership with Highfields School and their amazing tutors Jayne Allen and Jane Turner. We were delighted to hear the great news that Highfields School had been awarded the Regional Leadership Academy for 2018 by Sports Leaders UK. This is recognition at a national level of the high quality work and dedication from the team at Highfields School to ensure their learners can follow and have access to a true pathway in PE and school sport. The apprenticeship programme continues to offer the extension to the School Sports Leadership Pathway and this innovative approach adds itself to increased employability for the individuals involved within the programme. Thank you to everyone for all your hard work and commitment with regards to opening doors and opportunities for individuals within the world of PE and school sport. Jill Eaton - Director Sporting Futures Training and all the SFT Team Thanks were given at the end of the awards by Mr O’Reilly to everyone for their attendance at a truly inspiring evening.

I was able to attend and verify the unit on communication skills and the qualities that are needed for leaders. DL1 is a nationally recognised qualification that enables successful learners to assist in leading purposeful and enjoyable dance activity sessions, under direct supervision. Extended project qualification (EPQ) On Friday 12 April Mrs Allen and Mrs Turner observed the EPQ presentation by Ben and Katy in year 13, at the end of which they presented trophies to our level 2 dance leaders of the year. They have both made an outstanding contribution to dance in school, both at a performance level and at a teaching/mentoring level of younger students. The qualification has been designed to develop generic leadership skills that can be applied to a variety of dance situations as well as contributing to the personal development of the learner. BOOK CLUB RECOMMENDATIONS This week’s school book club recommendation is ‘An Eagle in the Snow’ by Michael Morpurgo. I liked this book because it was fast paced, emotive and heart-stopping. It features animals and wildlife and it is about war. If you like historical fiction and stories that aren't always happy then you will absolutely love this book.

Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries (form tutor/pastoral manager) If parents/carers have any concerns about a student, we ask that they contact the form tutor or pastoral manager in the first instance either by email or telephone. If parents/carers wish to contact the school regarding attendance, the pastoral manager should be the first point of contact. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or pastoral manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year. Subject specific enquiry (subject teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant head of department.

Highfields School Newsletter School to home communication

In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ assessment profiles/data sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request. Please contact the relevant pastoral manager at school to update your details if you do not currently receive email communications from Highfields: Mrs Green - Years 7 & 8 Mr Tidmarsh - Years 9, 10 & 11 Mrs Bumby - Sixth form
