Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds

START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential.

The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile.

Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – contact Mrs Turner for further details.

Juniper Training and Virtual Open Day

Juniper have been in touch with us to update school on how they are operating at the moment and to inform us of their virtual open day on 1 May at 2pm.

Protecting Progressions

The provision covers the opportunity to do:  English Functional Skills Level 1 or 2  Maths Functional Skills Level 1 or 2  GCSE English or maths available to be sat in November 2020 if the young person has been given a predicted grade 3 or likely to get a 3 if they took their GCSE.  A Vocational Qualification at Level 2 in Business Administration, Customer Service, Child Care Level 2.  If the young person is career unsure but keen to build their confidence and employability skills then they can do BTEC Work Skills Level 2.

Through providing this opportunity we hope that we can protect as many progressions as possible for those who through no fault of their own have had an impact on them through the Covid-19 outbreak – and need the leeway and elbow room Juniper Training can currently provide to keep them on a sustainable track and after the 6 months course can aim for:  Part-time/full-time employment with training/shadowing  Traineeships to build up to a desired career area  Apprenticeships that can lead on to Apprenticeship Degrees  Further Education/College courses such as A Levels or Level 2 and 3 courses

At present there are 2 intakes:

6 May 2020: A Virtual Intake whereby learners can engage through Zoom on their laptop, iPhone or iPad facility. Once lockdown is expected to be lifted they would transfer into the normal in-centre teaching – we may have more of these intakes depending on the level of interest obviously.

10 August 2020: On-site Intake which will be when normality from lockdown would be expected to resume. This intake is particularly useful for learners who don’t think they will get a grade 4 or above that have not quite turned 16 or turning 16 after 31 July 2020. Current outgoing year 11 learners who don’t necessarily want to or unlikely to go College, but want to get their English, maths, work experience and employability up-skilled.

Virtual Open Day

There is a virtual open day that learners can register for at www.junipertraining.co.uk. Juniper are also hosting a Virtual Open Day on Friday 1 May which will provide an overview of all of our post-16 pathways and how these may be of benefit young people. Juniper support over 2500 students per year and this will be a great opportunity for them to hear our achievements to date and hear from our students, apprentices, staff, tutors and assessors as they share their personal Juniper journeys.
