Newsletter Sports Update

Mr C Shirtcliffe (Head of PE)

Annual House Sports Day Sports Day was held on 4 July this year with students from Years 7, 8 and 9 competing in a wide range of events - kurling, combat ball, boccia, handball, lacrosse, garden games, volleyball, capture the howler and ultimate frisbee, as well as the traditional athletic events. The students behave extremely well and when they weren't taking part they were supporting their House peers. The day ended up in a two horse race with Aqua and Aeris being neck and neck, changing positions right up to the last few events. After the final relay the scores were tallied up and Aeris came out on top. A massive thank you to the staff who helped run the activities and supported the running of the day, also a thank you to the students who were amazing as always showing their sporting talents.

Newsletter Sports Leaders

Mrs Allen (School Sports Co-ordinator)

School Sports Partnership Tri-Golf Finals On Tuesday 27 June SSP Tri-Golf finals were held at Highfields with Golf Pro Ricky Carvell leading the event. The Highfields Sports Leaders led the young pupils through the activities and acted as scorers. Winners were Osmaston from the Ashbourne cluster. All Saints, representing our cluster, achieved Bronze medals and The Spirit of the Games trophy.

Primary Sports Evening On Wednesday 28 June the final Primary Sports Evening of the year took place indoors because of the rain! Mr Molyneux, PE Apprentice, led the session for South Darley on dodgeball and certificates were awarded at the end - We look forward to seeing this group again as they will be in Year 6 in September.

Newsletter World Cup Cricket at Derbyshire County Cricket Club Wednesday 28 June was a wet day, but it did not stop team Highfields! We went to the Word Cup Cricket at Derbyshire County Cricket Ground in Derby to carry the flags at the opening ceremony and watch South Africa v New Zealand. Rain all day caused the match to be abandoned at 2.30pm. We arrived at 8.45am for flag practice as we were to carry the countries flags out to the opening ceremony. The rest of the day we were introduced to both teams and a chance for photo opportunities, autographs and a chance to talk to the players. We had a photoshoot with the Word Cup itself and they provided lots of fun crafts and balloon making. We saw England’s match on screen from the day before, but alas no live cricket.

Students had chance to speak to two players from National League from Loughborough Lightening. Mr Molyneux and Mrs Allen also chatted to one of the South African coaches. The 26 students from Years 7, 8 and 9 were brilliant.

PE Apprentices Thursday 29 June was the final lesson observation for Mr Foster at Youlgrave school and on Friday 20 June, PE Apprentice, Mr Molyneux supported the Highfields team at the County Schools Athletics Finals at Moorways in Derby.

Newsletter My Work Experience: Alisha Bethell Alisha Bethell (Year 10), spent a week at the Women in Sport offices for work experience and writes about her passion for sport; which encouraged her to reach out for a placement with Women in Sport. Alisha shares the role models that inspired her to play sport, as well as her work as a Sport Leader (from Alisha’s blog on the Women in Sport website https://www.womeninsport.org/blog/workexperience-alisha-bethell/) The earliest memories I have of doing any type of physical activity are from when I was about 3 and a half, when my mum took me to my first ballet lesson. It was a challenging experience as a youngster and 3 weeks later I decided ballet wasn’t for me. Throughout my childhood I tried lots of different sports such as; cheer-leading, gymnastics, karate and swimming – never finding one that I seemed to really love. That was until I found football. Despite being brought up in a very football mad environment I never knew playing football was an option for girls until I moved to Derbyshire, where girls football is quite a big thing. I joined the first team I found, and quickly grew to love football, the team and my coaches. That year we won the ‘Matlock Treble’: the league, the cup and the festival of football. Although it had been an outstanding year I realised that the style of football just wasn’t for me. So, I moved to a bigger league and a bigger team, Chesterfield Town. At Chesterfield, I improved drastically and although it was my first year I became a permanent starter in the back four. It was a fantastic season for us but we just narrowly missed out on top 4 in such a tough league. I’ve always loved sport from a young age and I was always the one who wanted to try something new and I also knew when I didn’t like something. So, to choose a role model or someone who I look up to is quite hard for me. At home, it was probably my step-dad who influenced me by letting me know that you’re never too old to try something new, as at 40 he started to compete in triathlons and grew to love them. At school it was, and still is, my teacher Mrs Allen. She has inspired me to not just keep up with the physical side of sport but the leadership side of things and to get all my qualifications that would set me up in wider array of fields eg coaching and teaching. She is the one who has inspired me to become a teacher, and make an impact on people’s life like she has on mine. Mrs Allen started a worldwide recognised programme at my school called Sports Leaders UK. Through this I have been able to get so many qualifications, skills and new friends. Over 3 years I have done over 130 hours of leading in lots of different sports, courses and programmes. Also, having some of the most memorable moments with my best friends. One of these was taking part in the Play Unified programme at Old Trafford in Manchester. In fact, Mrs Allen was the one who knew I was the one for the job when the Women in Sport Charity rang up and asked for a work experience placement.

Issue 26: 7 July 2017

Newsletter Through being a Sports Leader I’ve heard little bits about the charity, but my curiosity and eagerness for equality was really what drove me to say yes to the placement. Not knowing much about Women in Sport I knew I’d learn a lot from the week I would have with them. Also, knowing that I want to do something to with sport when I grow up working with this charity would show me another side to the industry. Out of all the thousands of famous sports people I love and watch regularly, three have had an impact on my life. The first being Steph Houghton, centre back and captain for Manchester City women’s and English National team. With over 50 caps for the national team the 2015 world cup was where she first caught my eye, she led her team to victory and got them through defeat along with showing her incredible football skills, I really took an interest to her and inspired to be in her boots. Without a doubt, Lucy Bronze, is on my list. In my opinion, Bronze is arguably the best footballer in the UK, she can play anywhere but really shines at right back. Again, she plays for Manchester City and has over 40 caps for the national team. Her speed, skill and stamina really bring something else to the pitch. Finally, Carli Lloyd, who is respectively; 2x Olympic gold medallist, 2015/2016 FIFA world’s best player and World Cup Champion with her national team, America. The number of medals and tournaments she has won does not bring to justice how effective and essential she is in the game. Her hat-trick in the World Cup is what made her rise to fame but after reading her book I learnt she doesn’t let it all get to her and she is down to earth.

Newsletter School News Y9 Reading Challenge Celebration At the start of Year 9 Highfields students were challenged to read 9 books during Y9, with modern titles such as ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘The Hunger Games’ and older classics such as ‘The Secret Garden’ and ‘Black Beauty’. The books were all recommendations, some by members of staff and sixth formers, others award winning titles like Anne Cassidy’s ’Looking for JJ’, and some the favourite books of famous people including David Beckham, Emma Watson and Barack Obama. Last week winners of the reading challenge celebrated their achievements in the upper school library. They were treated to a giant and delicious cake, generously donated by The New Bath Hotel. Mrs Key, the Key Stage 4 Co-ordinator said,” The students have achieved a huge amount, reading a wide range of challenging books throughout the year. They thoroughly deserved a chocolatey treat!” The students all agreed the cake was “Nice and yummy!” And Mrs Brown, Library Technician was pleased students enjoyed the reading challenge so much “And the cake too, of course!” she added. Independent studies consistently show reading books for enjoyment not only improves performance in reading tests but also brings benefits that help pupils achieve more across the whole curriculum.

Both teams performed brilliantly with even the parents of Lady Manners students voting for the Highfields teams. Rebecca Maver won best speaker and Highfields School were placed second in two narrow fought competitions which could have gone either way.

Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices School Uniform Uniform consultation For some time, students across the school have requested that we conduct a review of school uniform. Whilst we are comfortable with our existing uniform, we are aware that we have not formally reviewed arrangements for some time. As such, we would like to explore the view of students, staff and parents/carers, initially through a short survey. We would very much like as many parents/carers and students to take part in our survey as possible.

To access the survey, please follow the link below https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/D3HDY52 High expectations for the new academic year Recent newsletters have included messages thanking parents and carers for their support in working with us to ensure that Highfields students adhere to the school's uniform policy and requested that this support continues in the new academic year. Whilst the vast majority of students come to school wearing appropriate uniform day in, day out, the choices being made by some students necessitate a need for us to be as clear as possible on this issue ahead of the new academic year, so that the position of the school is clearly understood by all students and parents/carers. We will be informing students of the need to wear appropriate school uniform every day from September in assemblies next week. This includes:  wearing black trousers, not jeans  wearing black shoes, not trainers  not wearing a hoody on the school site  ensuring that skirts are of an appropriate length (ie close to knee length) If a student is unable to wear an appropriate item of uniform as a 'one-off', he/she must report to the relevant Pastoral Manager to borrow a pair of school trousers, jumper or polo shirt. If a student refuses to wear appropriate clothing, this will be interpreted as defiance and handled within the school's discipline policy. If a student comes to school wearing inappropriate footwear, then he/she should wear footwear that closely matches uniform expectation and report to the Pastoral Manager at the start of the day. A 'yellow card' will be issued, with the expectation that appropriate footwear will be worn the following day. If a student reports to the Pastoral Manager that the issue will last for more than one day, then the student will be issued a green card and parents/carers will be contacted.

Unwanted School Uniform If you have any unwanted items of school uniform still in good condition that your son/daughter has outgrown, or because they are no longer needed at the end of the school year, please can you consider donating them to school. We will accept items of Highfields School uniform that are clean and in good condition and find them a new home. Any donated items will be much appreciated and can be dropped off at Reception at either school site.

Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request. Please contact the relevant Pastoral Manager at school to update your details if you do not currently receive email communications from Highfields: Mrs Green - Years 7 & 8 Mrs Harper - Years 9, 10 & 11 Mrs Bumby - Sixth Form
