Newsletter Message from the headteacher Last week it got a bit busy and I thought I may have more time this week … how wrong I was. I would like to thank at this point in time all staff, students and families for their support over the coronavirus issue. As you can imagine it is a busy time for all school leaders as we do our best to keep up with and follow national guidance. Highfields parents/carers have been fantastic and seem to have realised that the best way they could support was to let us get on and do our jobs in preparing for all eventualities as best we can. The only single issue we have had arose when someone forwarded one of our emails to the Derby Telegraph suggesting that we were somehow covering up a confirmed case of coronavirus. The journalist involved luckily dismissed this as nonsense, but it still took valuable time to resolve. Those of you involved in healthcare or education will know that currently I am running from meeting to meeting trying to ensure that we are top of all the things we are supposed to be. Perhaps the most pressing issue early in the week was keeping up with student demand for soap in toilets. We are currently using around 3 times the usual amount, so we check the toilets hourly to ensure a good supply. I am the kind of headteacher who tries to avoid inundating families with letters and communications. My hope is that when I do write to you, you assume it is for a reason and read what I have to say. Please rest assured that when I have something to tell you (other than we are following current DfE and Public Health England advice as it comes in) I will be in touch immediately. Today, as is typical at the moment, I will be checking in with our cleaners, site staff, senior team and health and safety manager to ensure that we are doing everything we can to enhance the safety of our community. Recognising that things are developing daily I would not be surprised if I have written to you more formally in response to emerging events by the time this newsletter reaches you on Friday evening … Elsewhere in school, when students are not asking me when the school is going to close they are in lessons as usual. We have recently completed deep dives in music and dance. Deep dives are our strategy to understand and celebrate how a subject curriculum is put together, what works about it and what could do with some more thought. I’m thrilled that a recent visit by our school improvement partner for Derbyshire celebrated the robustness of these deep dives and noted the extent to which middle and senior leaders undertake them collaboratively. Anyway, this week was dance and I found myself in a really brilliant dance lesson. You can only really understand how difficult something is when you try it yourself. A number of years ago I was pulled out from a salsa lesson because my flailing arms were ‘a physical threat to other dancers’. After this I took up martial arts where, puzzlingly, the instructor assured me that my flailing arms presented no physical threat to anybody. In today’s lesson students were coming to terms with the Brazilian art of Capoeira which is a kind of fighting dance. The piece was based on one studied at GCSE as can be seen from the excerpt below from the scheme of work (that’s the dance teacher’s nail polish, not mine). I was really impressed with the dance teacher’s attention to detail and her apparent refusal to accept standards that did not meet her expectations. It was also brilliant to see boys taking on direction as enthusiastically as girls. So, thanks again for supporting us through a difficult period. Please continue to follow all the advice which we forward to you from relevant agencies, some of which will be included in this newsletter. In a number of cases, families have been supremely responsible in communicating with us where there is a worry and working with the school calmly and thoughtfully to reduce the risks to others. I look forward to a time when this particular challenge is on the way out rather than on the way in. Have a good weekend.

The year 7 parent consultation evening will take place on Tuesday 17 March in the sports hall at upper school site (Lumsdale) between 4pm and 7pm. The option to consent or decline the vaccination is at the end of the questionnaire so please complete even if you do not want your child to have the vaccination. The unique school code for Highfields School is DD112950 For more information about the vaccination and the date we are due into your school please visit our website: http://www.derbyshireschoolnurses.org.uk/parents/immunisations If you experience any problems, please call the School Age Immunisation Team. Repton: 01283 707178 Clay Cross: 01246 252953
Immunisations information for year 9 parents/carers: The Immunisation Team will attend Highfields School on 6 May 2020 to vaccinate year 9 girls with their second HPV Human Papilloma Vaccine dose. The team already have consent for year 9 girls, so there is no requirement to give consent again. Further information can be found on the NHS website below: http://www.derbyshireschoolnurses.org.uk/parents/immunisations/immunisation-dates
Please note: The Immunisation Team have stated that legally students can self-consent on the day if they are 13 years old and assessed as competent by NHS staff members, however this creates much more work for staff and the team and they have stressed it is important to complete the e-consent as soon as notification has been sent.

Newsletter Coronavirus update As you would expect we continue to act on incoming information from the Department for Education and from Public Health England. We are following all available advice, particularly around hygiene and are meeting regularly to ensure that we are prepared for all emerging eventualities. We can confirm that we still have no known cases of coronavirus in our school community. We are resisting the temptation to send you detailed communications because they are likely to be subject to change as we are overtaken by changing guidance or events. For now, please reassure children that business is continuing as usual and that all precautions are being taken to protect them and their community. We will update you further when we need to. Thank you for your continued support, for communicating with us about yours or your family’s circumstances and for allowing us the time and space to focus on our planning.
GOV.UK Department for Education:
Latest advice on Coronavirus Exam preparation and Ofqual advice We recognise that students, parents, schools and colleges will be concerned about the possible impact of coronavirus on the 2020 summer exam series. Ofqual’s advice at this time is to continue to prepare for exams and other assessments as normal. Ofqual continues to work closely with exam boards, other regulators and the Department for Education to plan for a range of scenarios, as the public would expect. Our overriding priorities are fairness to students this summer and keeping disruption to a minimum. It is still many weeks until exams start and we will issue updated advice if necessary, giving schools and colleges as much notice as possible. The latest updates from Ofqual can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/updated-statement-on-coronavirus
The importance of hygiene Personal hygiene is the most important way we can tackle COVID-19, especially washing hands more; and the catch it, bin it, kill it strategy for those with coughs and sneezes. Wash your hands more often for 20 seconds with soap and hot water. In addition to handwashing before eating and after sneezing, both children and staff should also wash hands after using toilets and after travelling on public transport.

Newsletter Evening of Dance
Highfields School proudly presents the Evening of Dance on Wednesday 18 March 2020. It will be a celebration of the performing arts showcasing multiple different styles and variations of dance. In previous years this celebratory evening has been a great way of bringing everyone together through dance and we hope this year’s event will be no different. Dance is an amazing way to stay healthy, build confidence and develop new skills whilst remaining fun, enjoyable and fulfilling. It is a great release and form of expressionism which we believe should be encouraged. The evening will be a great opportunity for students at Highfields to show off their hard work and determination, giving us the opportunity to show how collaborating and learning from each other, in an inclusive and supporting environment has been beneficial and made possible through the performing arts. Students from all year groups (years 7-13) are looking forward to performing and sharing their own choreography and love for dance with you. The event will take place at 7pm at Highfields lower site Starkholmes with adult tickets £5 and concessions £3. Everyone is welcome and we really hope to see you there to join in the fantastic evening! By dance leaders Jess and Sammy

Newsletter Curriculum Spotlight Drama
Miss Bonsall The fundamental objectives of the drama department at Highfields School are based on an insightful belief in the importance of drama both as an academic and vocational discipline within the school curriculum, and as an important underpinning for living a confident, creative and successful life beyond the confines of education. The most important skills we wish to develop are those of listening, communicating and empathising. The ability to think imaginatively is the most fundamental skill to develop, but in order to express ideas, students must also be able to communicate effectively; within their group/company and for their audience. We believe that the curriculum we have designed at key stage 3 prepares students well for GCSE and A Level drama. The specific aims of our curriculum are based around four key ideas that we have identified as vital to meeting our objectives. 1.
Confidence – As a department, we aim to build the confidence of students in a variety of ways, including: their ability to speak in front of others, share their own ideas and interpretations with people they may never have worked with before, lead a group task or try something new. Many students also develop a confidence in their own ability and take this further by taking part in the wider performing arts within the school. For example, the school production is an opportunity to collaborate with other students from other year groups, with other skills, that they might not otherwise meet. Students may be an all-round performer, specialise in one discipline, help with production or play in the band. Recent years have seen sell out performances of Little Shop of Horrors, Footloose and Legally Blonde. We are now working towards the production of Beauty and the Beast.
2.
Cross-Curricular - We wish to transmit deep knowledge and understanding of social, moral, historical and cultural context, not just locally, but both within the United Kingdom and the wider world. This might be through the study of topics such as WW2 evacuation in term 4 of year 7, the 9/11 disaster explored during year 8 or in our discrimination topic during year 9 where we relate empathetically to the story of Rosa Parks. At GCSE and A Level students are able to refer to the social, cultural and historical context of plays such as Blood Brothers (set in Liverpool during Thatcher’s reign) and A Servant of Two Masters which sees a range of stock characters perform in the style of Commedia De’ll Arte during the Italian Renaissance.
3.
Create - It is our aim to allow students to be creative and inventive, as well as gaining inspiration from theorists and practitioners. We also hope that students continuously develop life skills such as critical thinking, evaluating, analysing, empathising and communicating; there are very few jobs that do not require these skills. Our students become used to creating a performance ‘from scratch’ using a stimulus from the beginning of year 7 (they use a crime scene investigation to create a performance). Recent stimulus used by GCSE and A-Level students, include: organ trafficking, Donald Trump, climate change and child slavery.
4.
Celebrate – We hope students will view drama and performing as a fun and interesting subject. All teachers within the department love and value the study of theatre and its history. It is also important that students develop a love of learning in drama and inspiring a passion that is shared by our whole department, whether it be Miss Bonsall’s love of political comedy, Mrs Rifkin’s enthusiasm for Shakespeare or Miss Hendry’s obsession with physical theatre. We want

Issue 24: 13 March 2020
Newsletter students to match this enthusiasm, generating an interest in theatre and gaining cultural experiences that will remain with them for life. Students can experience trips to the theatre, including residential trips to London and NYC, and can partake in extra-curricular activities at lunch-time and after school. We are passionate about, and pride ourselves in the love of giving students a breadth of opportunities. We also want them to celebrate their love of shared learning and group work, working alongside peers and developing rapport with staff and classmates. The skills and knowledge required are developed predominantly practically at key stage 3, but we also self and peer assess in our workbooks and verbally to help to prepare us for the written exams in new specifications, as well as the reflective coursework expected by exam boards. Whilst building skills, it is also important that students experience engaging, challenging and interesting lessons based on British and world theatre, or using a stimulus from history or society issues/news. These lessons will help to equip them with the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to succeed not just in written and practical examinations but beyond the classroom; creating well rounded, empathetic, considerate students who are confident in meeting the demands of modern life, as they able to understand the world around them and the people they share it with. Currently, year 7 are creating their first devised piece (based on WW2 evacuees) using a range of techniques including split scene, thought tracking and poetry whilst year 8 are working on a scripted piece from ‘Our Day Out’ by Willy Russell (author of our GCSE Set Text ‘Blood Brothers’). Year 9 have recently taken part in numerous workshops based on the Hillsborough disaster, discovering multiple ways to use Verbatim Theatre, whilst using a range of techniques they have learnt during their Highfields drama journey. Year 10 are creating the component 2 devised performance which they will perform in May as part of their official controlled assessment whilst also writing their devising Log in exam conditions each week. This document outlines their devising process and how they have developed and refined their performance. Year 11 students had their exam this week (Tuesday 10 March). They presented their scripted performances for an audience with the visiting examiner and year 10 drama students. These extracts have been chosen from a range of plays, including: 1980’s ‘Bouncers’ and ‘Shakers’ by John Godber, ‘Girls Like That’ - a play about the trials and tribulations of growing up as a girl in today’s society) and ‘Tissue’ – a play about breast cancer. A Level students are now working towards their written exam and currently exploring one of their set texts ‘Metamorphosis’. For this module, they not only act but direct and design too, considering lighting, sound, costume and set too.

Newsletter School News Year 10 Health Day Charlotte (Year 10)
On Friday 6 March, year 10 had their ‘Health Day’. It was a fun and informative day where we took part in different activities run by members of school staff and different organisations such as Chesterfield College, Paul White and Kim Robinson`s School of Dance. During the day, we were taught how to be safe, healthy and fit in our lives. We had the opportunity to do trampolining which was an enjoyable experience as well as a Zumba/fitness session that showed us different ways to keep fit (as well as the majority of the boys from my form deciding to sing along to “Cotton Eye Joe”!). The self-defence session showed us how to safely protect ourselves when feeling threatened or when being attacked. The session on drugs was very informative, teaching us how to be safe and sensible and we learnt the effects they can have on your body, your family and your friends. We were also taught about sexual health awareness which included talking about maintaining healthy relationships. Overall, it was an entertaining day that made sure we have the skills and knowledge to be safe and healthy in our lives.

Newsletter Y11 Drama Exam Performance Miss Bonsall
On Tuesday 10 March, 41 year 11 students completed their scripted performance exam for the visiting examiner. This was 20% of the course and counts towards their GCSE. Students acted out two extracts from a play their group had been given based on their castability. They performed in front of an audience of year drama 10 students and their fellow classmates. They were exceptional on the day, supported each other superbly and should be very proud of themselves.

Fixture results U13 Girls’ Football Team through to semi-final of County Cup Mr Shirtcliffe
On Thursday 12 March our under 13 girls’ football team travelled to Buxton Community School to compete in the County Cup quarter final. The team played some excellent football, they controlled the game well with the goalkeeper having little to do. We were 2 nil up at half time which helped our confidence, then the girls stepped up another gear and went on to score 5 more goals, some wind assisted I might add. In the end we won the game convincingly progressing through to the quarter final of the County Cup. An excellent display by all, fingers crossed for the next round.

INSET days (no students in school): 1 September 2020
Remaining dates to be confirmed
** From 2015 schools have been able to consider variations to term dates provided they meet the statutory requirements. With this in mind we have taken the decision to return to school one day earlier for the start of the new academic year (Tuesday 1 September 2020) and finish the autumn term one day earlier (Thursday 17 December 2020). This is to ensure a smooth start to the academic year rather than students starting back with a staggered start on Thursday or Friday. The start of the 2020-21 academic year is as follows:
Tuesday 1 September 2020 - Staff will return to school on Tuesday that will be designated as an INSET day (no students in school). Wednesday 2 September 2020 – students in years 7 and 9 only return to school Thursday 3 September 2020 – all students return to school

Newsletter School to home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ data sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request. Please contact the relevant year managers at school to update your details if you do not currently receive email communications from Highfields: Lower school site (Starkholmes): Mrs Green
