Expressions of interest for 2021 Ski Trip to Davos, Switzerland (12-20 February 2021)
Due to the success of this year’s ski trip we are planning to run another trip during February half term next year, from 12-20 February, open to students in years 7-12.
The total cost of the trip will be £1002. This includes around seven hours skiing tuition per day from British skiing instructors, hire of high quality ski equipment and a full entertainment programme each evening.
We are asking for expressions of interest at this stage to see if the trip will be viable. Letters with full details of the trip will be available to collect from reception at both sites from Monday 9 March if your child is interested.
Reminder: Year 7 parent consultation evening 17 March 2020 at Lumsdale:
The year 7 parent consultation evening will take place on Tuesday 17 March in the sports hall at upper school site (Lumsdale) between 4pm and 7pm.
At the meeting you will have the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with subject teachers. We would encourage you to bring your son/daughter to this meeting so that they can contribute to the discussion.
An appointment system is essential to the efficient running of the evening and we would ask you to ensure that your son/daughter makes appointments at times convenient to you, and that you keep to these times as far as possible. A maximum of five minutes per appointment is available because of the numbers in teaching groups. However, some members of staff teach several groups and may not have time to see all parents/carers. If you have real concerns in a particular subject, please do not hesitate to contact the member of staff at a later date if you are unsuccessful on the evening. The evening will end at 7pm promptly.
Students will record appointments on an appointment sheet that they will be given on Tuesday 3 March. Please tell them the times you would like appointments and ask your child to ensure that no appointment is made after 6.45pm.
Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you.

Please note: The Immunisation Team have stated that legally students can self-consent on the day if they are 13 years old and assessed as competent by NHS staff members, however this creates much more work for staff and the team and they have stressed it is important to complete the e-consent as soon as notification has been sent.

Evening of Dance Issue 23: 6 March 2020

Highfields School proudly presents the Evening of Dance on Wednesday 18 March 2020.
It will be a celebration of the performing arts showcasing multiple different styles and variations of dance.
In previous years this celebratory evening has been a great way of bringing everyone together through dance and we hope this year’s event will be no different.
Dance is an amazing way to stay healthy, build confidence and develop new skills whilst remaining fun, enjoyable and fulfilling. It is a great release and form of expressionism which we believe should be encouraged. The evening will be a great opportunity for students at Highfields to show off their hard work and determination, giving us the opportunity to show how collaborating and learning from each other, in an inclusive and supporting environment has been beneficial and made possible through the performing arts.
Students from all year groups (years 7-13) are looking forward to performing and sharing their own choreography and love for dance with you. The event will take place at 7pm at Highfields lower site Starkholmes with adult tickets £5 and concessions £3.
Everyone is welcome and we really hope to see you there to join in the fantastic evening!

Y11 Highfields Hustle workshop for families Wednesday 11 March 2020 (6-7pm), Wheeldon Hall
There is a bit of a buzz about Y11 at the moment as many students are revising very effectively and it looks like they are in line to achieve some very impressive individual results.
Many of the students who appear to be in a strong position have adopted, with the support of their families, a revision strategy which we call the ‘Highfields Hustle’. This has been based on a wealth of recent research into the most effective approaches to revision. By adopting these students can ensure that they are making the best use of their precious time.
We delivered a ‘Highfields Hustle’ briefing to a small pilot group of families earlier in February. The feedback has been extremely positive and so Mr Cole and I are offering a second session as above. Parents/carers who attended the last session praised the ‘Hustle’ for a being a clear, no nonsense approach to revision which families could easily support.
Thank you to the parents/carers who have already secured their place for 11 March. If you haven’t already done so and would like to attend, please email kalcock@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk to ensure we have sufficient space available.
Please remember that a family’s support for children’s revision can make a HUGE difference to exam success and therefore to the range of options open to your child as they leave Y11.
A Marsh Headteacher
