Newsletter Message from the headteacher ‘Student voice’ is the simple act in schools of listening to students. For something so simple it can go badly wrong. When I was a young teacher a neighbouring school in Lewisham decided to rebrand itself. The headteacher was so sure that students would agree with her judgement that the school should be renamed after Sybil Phoenix (a local black role model in the community) that she told the students their vote would be final. She was somewhat dismayed when the student vote revealed that the school should be named ‘Bayside High’ which was the name of a fictional school in a popular TV programme of the time. There followed a period of unpleasantness whilst the headteacher explained that student voice was clearly wrong as the school (being in South London) was not even nearly at the side of a bay. I relayed this story to our student voice group who convened on Tuesday (see image) to illustrate that honesty is the best policy where student voice is concerned. I am genuinely keen to understand how students feel about Highfields but cannot promise always to grant their every wish. In fact, they absorbed this message well and were hugely helpful in offering us a student perspective on some of the developments the school wishes to undertake. We closed the meeting with a reminder for students that ‘student voice’ is far more than the meeting of this group. Senior leaders, for example, have written into their improvement objectives the fact that their ‘canaries’ must reflect back that our Big 3 projects are having an impact. ‘Canaries’ are small groups of students who we check in on from time to time. They give us early warning of any issues that students have with the changes we are trying to make. These ‘canaries’ were discussed on Monday evening when the senior team completed their latest evaluation of the projects included in the Big 3 plan. This took well over an hour because senior leaders are required to present a lot of evidence which other leaders then interrogate. A long story made very short is: Things currently going well include the fact that we are having quite a considerable impact on the quality of learning and behaviour with GCSE projections looking sound, attendance is up (taking into account the weeks in November and December when we were hit by mass illness) and exclusions and consequences are down. Next steps include the fact that boys’ attendance at school is improving more quickly than girls’ and children from families who may be facing or have faced disadvantage are not doing as well as their peers. At the same meeting we reflected on our sustainability and our attempts to reduce single use plastics. We are currently evaluating the impact of an additional water fountain at Lumsdale and the introduction of Vit-Stix with which you can flavour your refillable water bottle. Oh, and a student in Y11 made this heart shaped dessert as part of her final GCSE food exam. Stunning chocolate work that I was cruelly denied despite increasingly desperate requests/pleas/ demands/threats. Have a lovely weekend!

Newsletter Parents evening reminders: Year 10 parent consultation evening 3 March 2020 at Lumsdale:
As you are aware the year 10 parents evening is on Tuesday 3 March 2020 in the sports hall at Lumsdale (upper school site) between 4pm and 7pm. During the evening you will have the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with subject teachers. I would encourage you to bring your son/daughter to this meeting so that they can contribute to the discussion. This is an invaluable opportunity at this crucial point in your son/daughter’s education to celebrate successes and gain advice on how your son/daughter can succeed in their course. I will be there as Head of Year 10 so please talk to me about any issues that you may have. Thank you for your ongoing support and I look forward to seeing you at parents’ evening. Miss Hughes Head of Year 10
Year 7 parent consultation evening 17 March 2020 at Lumsdale:
The year 7 parent consultation evening will take place on Tuesday 17 March in the sports hall at upper school site (Lumsdale) between 4pm and 7pm. At the meeting you will have the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with subject teachers. We would encourage you to bring your son/daughter to this meeting so that they can contribute to the discussion. An appointment system is essential to the efficient running of the evening and we would ask you to ensure that your son/daughter makes appointments at times convenient to you, and that you keep to these times as far as possible. A maximum of five minutes per appointment is available because of the numbers in teaching groups. However, some members of staff teach several groups and may not have time to see all parents/carers. If you have real concerns in a particular subject, please do not hesitate to contact the member of staff at a later date if you are unsuccessful on the evening. The evening will end at 7pm promptly. Students will record appointments on an appointment sheet that they will be given on Tuesday 3 March. Please tell them the times you would like appointments and ask your child to ensure that no appointment is made after 6.45pm. Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you. Newsletter Novel Coronavirus: COVID-19 update As you would expect we are in regular contact with the local authority and with Public Health England over this matter and are taking any action as and when required. Like schools all over the country we had students, families and staff travel to various locations in half term, but we are consulting on any cases we perceive to be a risk. Please act on the guidance below and reassure children that they are being looked after and that they should continue to focus on their learning, especially those approaching examinations. The latest guidance issued to us from Derbyshire County Council (26.2.20) is as follows: Novel Coronavirus: COVID-19 As you are aware there has been much media reporting of a new strain of Coronavirus which originated in Wuhan City, China -COVID-19. As a group, coronaviruses are common across the world. Typical symptoms include fever and a cough that may progress to a severe pneumonia causing shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. Generally, coronavirus can cause more severe symptoms in people with weakened immune systems, older people, and those with long-term conditions like diabetes, cancer and chronic lung disease. The majority of cases are mild. Despite high levels of media reporting, the risk to individuals remains low. There are significant numbers of testing being undertaken, however it is important to remember that rates of positive tests remain extremely low (currently 9 in the UK as of 26.2.20). The most up to date information and advice for the public around coronavirus can be found on the Gov.uk website: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/wuhan-novel-coronavirus-information-for-the-public?utm_source=f95e3b3e58ec-4f41-adf8-31bef927f9d8&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=govuknotifications&utm_content=immediate
Public Health England are the lead for management of cases and suspected cases. In the event of a positive case, Public Health England would undertake contact tracing based on risk, and advise any individuals or settings connected with any action required. The DfE have produced guidance to educational settings about COVID-19. This guidance collates useful information for schools including what to do if someone is confirmed or suspected to have COVID-19 has been in a school. Government advice is being updated regularly so we would advise individuals utilise the links for the most up to date information. PHE has also produced some common questions on their blog. https://publichealthmatters.blog.gov.uk/2020/01/23/wuhan-novel-coronavirus-what-you-need-to-know/

Newsletter Y11 Highfields Hustle workshop for families
Wednesday 11 March 2020 (6-7pm), Wheeldon Hall There is a bit of a buzz about Y11 at the moment as many students are revising very effectively and it looks like they are in line to achieve some very impressive individual results. Many of the students who appear to be in a strong position have adopted, with the support of their families, a revision strategy which we call the ‘Highfields Hustle’. This has been based on a wealth of recent research into the most effective approaches to revision. By adopting these students can ensure that they are making the best use of their precious time. We delivered a ‘Highfields Hustle’ briefing to a small pilot group of families earlier in February. The feedback has been extremely positive and so Mr Cole and I are offering a second session as above. Parents/carers who attended the last session praised the ‘Hustle’ for a being a clear, no nonsense approach to revision which families could easily support. Please email kalcock@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk by Friday 6 March 2020 if you would like to book a place at this event. We will then assess whether there is sufficient/too much demand and respond accordingly. Please remember that a family’s support for children’s revision can make a HUGE difference to exam success and therefore to the range of options open to your child as they leave Y11. A Marsh Headteacher

Newsletter Curriculum Spotlight Design, Technology, Engineering and Food Miss Morris
In our department we believe that a high-quality design, technology, engineering and food education makes an essential contribution, not only across the school curriculum but develops life-long skills that contribute to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of society as a whole. We aim to encourage students to use their individual creativity and skills to design and make products that solve real world problems within a range of contexts, understanding their own needs and the needs of others. We encourage them to take risks and to become independent and innovative problem solvers. Through the evaluation of past and present design, technology, engineering and food products and systems, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. It is also our aim to encourage students to participate confidently and successfully in an increasingly technological world. To facilitate this, we offer a broad curriculum where students learn from the wider influences of Design, Technology & Engineering and Food Preparation & Nutrition. This includes historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic factors. On entry to year 7, through to year 13, we equip students with the skills required for independent learning and to be confident designers and practitioners. Through theory and practical work, our courses and projects equip them with generic, transferable skills that can be used across a range of employment sectors. We encourage them through a range of design briefs to be creative and innovative in their designing and experimentation and to produce high quality products, inspiring pride and a sense of achievement. Our key stage 3 curriculum is set up to prepare students to pursue our courses at key stage 4 and 5, should they choose to continue. From year 9 onwards, the curriculum is enhanced through the use of our computer aided design and manufacturing facilities. With a new computer suite added, students are able to make increasingly complex and high quality products. With our laser cutter, CNC router and 3D printers’ students gain valuable skills in using the latest technology used in industry. A very topical point in our lives and none more so than for our young people is the issue of climate change and impact on the environment. This is an increasingly important topic covered in our curriculum and within all of our specifications. All teachers promote discussion and deliver content to satisfy the theoretical knowledge required to answer exam questions. We put this into context by offering projects that allow our students to have a real understanding of how designers and manufacturers have a responsibility to make products sustainably. Our plan for the future is to keep updating our facilities to create an inspiring 21st Century environment and are already pursuing funding to offer a CAD/CAM experience for year 7 and 8 students at our Starkholmes lower school site.

Newsletter School News Davos skiing adventure Mrs Turner
We have just returned from an exhilarating ski trip to Davos, Switzerland. During the week the snow was perfect and we experienced every conceivable type of weather, from glorious blue skies and sunshine to total blizzard conditions. Mr Richardson really enjoyed being rescued by a piste basher. Our ski instructors were great and the progress made by all students, whether beginner or advanced, was stunning. All the staff on the trip would like to thank the students for their exemplary behaviour during the week, on and off the slopes, you were a credit to our school.

International Youth Sport and Sports Leaders Conference Two year 13 level 3 sports leaders, Ben and Holly along with Mrs Allen and Mrs Turner have been in Bahrain from Sunday 23 February until today, Friday 28 February attending the International Youth Sport and Sports Leaders conference. The Gulf states have been involved in training leaders with the Youth Sport Trust International. Highfields, together with Great Marlow School in Buckinghamshire were invited to attend this conference as ambassadors for the courses that have been delivered. On Sunday 23 February Highfields staff and students flew from Heathrow to Bahrain on an overnight flight. Staying in the Movenpick Hotel staff and students settled in and met guests from Bahrain and Great Marlow School. The conference officially opened on Tuesday where students participated in workshops and lectures. On Wednesday visits were organised to the centre where the primary schools’ festival was taking place, along with the preparation for the day’s events. In the evening staff and students had the opportunity to visit Manama Souq - the old bazaar (souk) of Manama, a busy marketplace with traditional and modern shops located between the Central Business District and the City. The festival was delivered to primary school students on Thursday and staff and students will be flying back from Bahrain to Heathrow today. Photographs and a full report on the amazing experience will be provided in next week’s newsletter.

Newsletter Fixture results Year 7 & 8 Football – County Cup Mr Shirtcliffe
On Thursday 26 February both the year 7 and year 8 boys football teams travelled to Tupton Hall for the second round of the Boys County Cup. The pitches were extremely boggy and the ball was sticking in the puddles, but this didn’t deter our teams. The year 7 team played excellent football at times especially in the conditions. We conceded early on in the game but came back showed excellent resilience. Unfortunately, we didn’t proceed to the 3rd round. The fortunes were different for the year 8 team who fielded some of our year 7 students. They managed the conditions well and ran out 6-2 winners to progress to the next round. Well done to all those flying the Highfields flag.

The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile. Students can access the programme at home via the website (startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – see Mrs Turner for further details.

Remaining dates to be confirmed
** From 2015 schools have been able to consider variations to term dates provided they meet the statutory requirements. With this in mind we have taken the decision to return to school one day earlier for the start of the new academic year (Tuesday 1 September 2020) and finish the autumn term one day earlier (Thursday 17 December 2020). This is to ensure a smooth start to the academic year rather than students starting back with a staggered start on Thursday or Friday. The start of the 2020-21 academic year is as follows:
Tuesday 1 September 2020 - Staff will return to school on Tuesday that will be designated as an INSET day (no students in school). Wednesday 2 September 2020 – students in years 7 and 9 only return to school Thursday 3 September 2020 – all students return to school

Newsletter School to home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ data sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request. Please contact the relevant year managers at school to update your details if you do not currently receive email communications from Highfields: Lower school site (Starkholmes): Mrs Green
