Catch-up programme for Y10 & Y11 students Teenage Booster (DTP) & Meningococcal ACWY (MEN ACWY) vaccinations

Due to the disruption caused by the pandemic there has been a decreased uptake of the year 9 vaccinations in the last two years. The NHS Immunisation Team want to ensure that all students are protected and have the opportunity to be vaccinated before they leave school.

If your child has missed the routine year 9 vaccinations (Teenage Booster and Meningitis ACWY) and you have not previously completed a consent form, please follow the link below. If a completed consent form is received the NHS team will aim to see your child on the same day as the planned year 9 session in school takes place on 8 February. However, if this is not possible you will be sent a link from the NHS to book an appointment at a local clinic.

Please visit https://www.derbyshireandcityimms.co.uk/Forms/DTP to complete the consent form. Highfields School’s unique code is DD112950.

Second dose Covid-19 vaccination (for all 12-15 year olds)

Following national guidance, the NHS Immunisation Team are offering the second dose of Covid-19 vaccinations to young people aged 12 – 15 and they will be continuing to use the e-consent as with other vaccine programmes. The team are also able to offer the first dose in school if your child hasn’t yet received a vaccination. Children must be 12 on the day of vaccination. Please complete the consent regardless of whether you have completed one previously. The Immunisation Team will only use newly completed forms.

There must be a gap of 12 weeks (84 days) between first and second doses. If there isn’t then your child will be refused vaccination on the day. Please only consent if your child will be eligible. There must also be a gap of 12 weeks between Covid infection and vaccination. If your child contracts Covid after completing the form or receives their vaccine elsewhere, please let the team know so they can remove them from their list.

Please visit https://www.derbyshireandcityimms.co.uk/Forms/CovidDose2 to complete the consent form. Highfield School’s unique school code is DD112950. Date in school: 15 February 2022. If possible, please make sure your child is wearing short sleeves and eats breakfast on the day of vaccination.

Please be aware that due to storage requirements of the vaccine the team will need to know the number of vaccines needed in advance. Therefore, the consent system will close two working days prior to the session at 9am. If your school session is on a Monday, the form will close the Thursday before and schools on Tuesday will close on Friday. The team are unable to add extra forms once it has closed.

Curriculum Spotlight

Film Studies

Mr Warrington

Film Studies is what I go to school for. Since I became the head of Film at Highfields about five years ago the subject has just grown. The best thing to hear as a film studies teacher is that it changes the way your pupils look at everything, not just films. They start to analyse what they see as a product of a creative process rather than as a form of simple entertainment.

We teach students to deconstruct what they are seeing, to look at it as an authored product with a decision making process that was designed to convey meaning.

We teach by watching films, how else? Hopefully we manage to combine our passion for films with the technical language and the insight to help students feel confident in conveying their own opinion on the texts.

From six films at GCSE; as varied as Singing' in the Rain to The Hurt Locker; to twelve at A-Level; taking in British, American, Brazilian and Chinese cinema; we aim to give each student a rounded view of the world of film.

We also try, as much as possible, to give each student a taste of film production, with scriptwriting at GCSE and short film production at A-Level.

Bake off – biscuit week

Biscuit week was an absolute success.

Judging the biscuits was a delicious but very challenging task as the standard was so incredibly high!

Food technology teacher, Mrs Hakin, was astounded by some of the technical ability displayed by students in creating coffee Viennese fingers and stained-glass window biscuits.

We had more entries in the second round which was excellent to see (and taste).

It is excellent to see more students playing an active role in our school community. Judges could not agree on one star baker as the standard was so high and the choice so great.

This meant star baker was awarded to Ethan (Y11), Kieran (Y11), Matteo (Y9) and Lucy (Y10).
