Newsletter Message from the headteacher It’s totally humbling to work at Highfields. On Monday night I attended the year 13 certificates evening. The event was run by Mr Flett and his sixth form leadership team who are an inspiring and impactful group. Their influence is written through the students who returned that night to be presented with their A level certificates. My favourite discussion was with a former year 13 who had just returned from India as part of her gap year activities. Her adventures had me riveted and slightly terrified. Her confidence, calmness and resilience in the face of some of the challenges she had encountered where she found herself involved in a dodgy overseas work placement were an endorsement both of her parenting and her schooling. She is so much braver and more intrepid than I will ever be. I was totally inspired. On Wednesday we had Christmas lunch and two students very kindly moved tables to sit with me because they thought I looked ‘lonely’ (I was actually fine, but I was really touched by the gesture). Anyway, we got chatting and I learnt two things. Firstly, you can now pay £170 for a pair of trainers (one hundred and seventy pounds!!). Secondly, I learnt (or perhaps was reminded) that for some families Christmas can be a tricky time, especially where a family has experienced a recent loss. If your family is going through a difficult time as you approach this Christmas my thoughts are with you and I hope you get through it as well as you can. I hope I don’t come across as Grinch-like but it’s important to me at the end of term that we continue to teach up to the last lesson rather than resorting to watching DVDs that have only a tenuous connection to the subject in hand. The reason for this is that otherwise a) behaviour falters because lessons are not meaningful and b) some families withdraw their children from the last day or so on the understanding that ‘they’re not missing much anyway’. I was therefore pleased to note on my rounds that teachers were managing to blend Christmas fun with a bit of valuable learning. A good example was seen in A level psychology where, amongst cakes and biscuits, students and teacher were playing a game of Articulate where the students had to guess types of psychological disorder from the description frantically provided under pressure by their classmate. It was fun and also a little bit dark ... Finally, on Thursday Ranald Macdonald (formerly chair of governors now working for Derbyshire Refugees) came to our Y10 assembly to accept an ENORMOUS load of shoe boxes filled with items that may make Christmas more bearable for refugees who have ended their travels (for the moment) in Derbyshire. The three students pictured (Holly, Eve and Charlotte) were the ones who, as I explained in an earlier newsletter, had moved staff to tears with their passion and drive on behalf of these displaced people. So that’s the winter term done. I do hope that your children get some rest over the holiday period and that they return to us in January, smartly turned out, with full pencil cases and books in bags and ready for the next thrilling instalment of their educational career. A Marsh Headteacher

Newsletter Parents/Carers News Reminder: school bus service 453 from January 2020 We have been informed by Derbyshire County Council School Transport that from 7 January 2020 the 453 school bus service that serves Two Dales to Highfields School (both sites) will be operated by Linburg Bus & Coaches. The route and timetable will remain the same and students can use their existing 453 pass on this service.
Year 9 options and parents’ consultation evening – 14 January The year 9 option and parents’ consultation evening is scheduled for Tuesday 14 January 2020. It is crucial that parents/carers attend this evening as key information about the options process will be available to enable you to guide your son / daughter in making their choices. Year 9 students have been informed of the process to choose their options for key stage 4 subjects and have been given an options booklet to explain the process and the choices available, along with an options form to return.
Parent consultation appointments - the year 9 parent consultation evening takes place from 4pm-6.45pm on 14 January 2020 for parent consultation appointments in the sports hall. Students will be reminded during assembly in the first week back to make appointments with subject teachers. Appointment slips will be available from the pastoral hub.
Options presentations - options presentations will take place in the Wheeldon Hall at 4pm and 6pm (this is the same presentation available at two points during the evening). Year 9 students have already been given an outline of the options process during assemblies and have copies of the options booklet to start to think about their subject choices. The key stage 4 curriculum booklet includes details of the options process as well as descriptions of all courses available to students starting year 10 in September 2020 and is available on the website via the link below: http://www.highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk/pdfs/InfoPDFs/KS4CurriculumBooklet.pdf
Careers advice - Phil Nelson, the school’s Independent Careers Advisor, will be available during the year 9 evening to talk to parents/carers and students. Phil will be able to provide any guidance with option choices and future career choices. His desk will be situated in the sports hall as part of the parent consultation evening.
Year 9 is an important year - students have started GSCE work in English, maths and science. It is important that we have high expectations of the students in all subjects up until the end of year 9, even in subjects that they think they will not be continuing with in year 10. This is important as subject choices can change and we don’t want students to have closed any doors for themselves. Mrs Ruston Head of Year 9

Newsletter School News Highfields Mock General Election Mr Flett
Students set up a mock General Election last Thursday and ran polling stations where they could vote. Turnout was high, and, although there was no run-away winner the results were not in line with the national picture. “Whatever the actual results, the most important thing was that students were thinking about the society they lived in. Students who start thinking about politics are more likely to think about their local communities and society as a whole” said Mr Marsh.
Manchester United Experience Mr Shirtcliffe
Last Thursday evening (12 December), students from different year groups were lucky enough to travel to Old Trafford to experience the 4-0 win for Manchester United against AZ from Holland In the Europa league. Students had the full match experience and were impeccable in their behaviour a huge well done to all students involved and thank you to staff for attending. What an amazing experience!

Newsletter Geography fieldwork Mrs Barker
This has been a(nother) busy half term for fieldwork and visits in the Geography department. We took year 13 students to a conference in London in November where they enriched their knowledge and understanding of global governance thanks to a range of expert speakers; this was followed by a tectonics conference in Nottingham a couple of weeks later, again, a great opportunity for students to enhance their understanding of these complex events. We have also undertaken one of the fieldwork elements of the GCSE course, investigating 'Change over time' in Matlock; students did amazingly well in atrocious weather conditions. Our final outing of the term was to Sheffield to ascertain whether Sheffield really is a 'global city'. Here are our Highfields' 'Women of Steel' next to the statue honouring the women who kept Sheffield's steel industry functioning during both World Wars. Watch this space!!

Newsletter Sixth form students celebrate Christmas with Denefields Court residents Mr Flett
Highfields sixth form students and residents of Denefields Court, Matlock, celebrated ten years of Christmas parties together. Michael, a resident at the home said, ‘We really look forward to the parties. I’ve been at every one of the parties for ten years. The students mix in with us, have a chat, and we play team games with them. They also sing to us. There have been some really great solos, and then we have carols at the end. Our Christmas feels like it has started when they come.’ ‘We get lots out of it too, said Megan, one of the students. It might not be what every teenager thinks of doing for a night out but playing games and chatting with the residents was one of the best ways to start Christmas’. This year the students prepared a series of hand-made Christmas games and performed some Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra numbers alongside traditional carols.

Newsletter Support for Derbyshire Refugee Charity Mr Flett
Students from across Highfields School have helped to support a refugee charity working in Derbyshire. They have collected a truckload of clothes and put together shoe boxes full of much needed items for people who arrive in the county, fleeing from some of the most dangerous places in the world. Ranald Macdonald from Derbyshire Refugee Solidarity said, “As an ex-Governor at Highfields School, I am proud and humbled by the humanity and energy shown by so many students in supporting the needs of asylum seekers and refugees, particularly during the hard winter months. Very many thanks for your generous donations”. Andrew Marsh, Headteacher said that “looking outwards from the school to understand and support people in need, especially at Christmas time, has felt important for the students. They have organised this themselves and have been incredible in their response to this request”.

Newsletter Derbyshire Refugee Solidarity Who are we? Derbyshire Refugee Solidarity (DRS) is a grassroots humanitarian organisation established in September 2015 with the core purpose of supporting refugees in Derbyshire and overseas in any way we can. We gained charitable status in July 2018.
How did we start? DRS began when a number of people saw photos of the three-year-old Syrian boy, Alan Kurdi, on the Turkish beach and being carried by a policeman. His five-year old brother died in the same incident, as desperate people tried to flee the civil war and brutal occupation by Islamic fundamentalists in their homeland. People became outraged that this was happening in Europe and wanted to do something to help. In Derby, three young women got together to provide aid and support for people in the camps of northern France, Syria and elsewhere. They began simply by collecting donations of warm clothes, tents, sleeping bags, coats and shoes. Derby City Council provided warehouse space and DRS worked collaboratively with organisations such as Muslims in Need and Care4Calais to bring together donations and distribute them to where they are most needed. Very soon, many more people joined and are still active with DRS. However, the scale of what can only be described as a crisis is enormous. War, civil strife and persecution of minorities is happening in many parts of the Middle East and Asia, Africa, Mayanmar and now Central America. There are millions of displaced people who have no hope of returning to their homes or homelands. At DRS we are doing what we can to help those whom we can, whether in Derby, Derbyshire or in camps across Europe and the Middle East.
What do we do? DRS is now located at St Anne’s Church, Whitecross Street, Derby, DE1 3NE. The centre is open from 09.30 – 12.30 on Thursdays and from 10.30 – 12.30 on Saturday. Details of what activities will be happening can be found on our website, twitter or Facebook pages. The sites also contain accounts and pictures of recent activities. It’s worth a look! DRS welcomes all asylum seekers, refugees and local volunteers to help in our work. We also receive regular donations from local, and not so local, groups who have set up regular collections of items most needed in the camps and on the streets of northern France, Paris, Greece, Lebanon and Syria. These include warm clothing, footwear, tents, blankets and sleeping bags. We also give funds to organisations providing food and care on the ground. The list of activities which happen at St Anne’s grows by the week – English lessons, music and art groups, a garden, yoga, carpentry and a barber (by refugees bringing skills from their previous occupations), bike repairs and djaying. We take our safeguarding and welfare responsibilities very seriously and, as well as training for a small team, we regularly brief everyone about keeping themselves and each other safe and have visits from the local PCSO and beat PC. The latter has proved very successful given the past experiences of many of our asylum seekers and refugees with the police and authorities. DRS groups have also: been to music festivals collecting tents, sleeping bags and other items left by festival goers (you won’t believe the mess they leave – look on our Facebook page to see!); held car boot sales to raise money; been on walks with National Park Rangers and to Matlock Bath

Newsletter illuminations; taken part in Park Runs and orienteering events; hosted teams of young people from the Young Citizenship Scheme; given talks to many organisations and schools, encouraging them to become involved with our work; and much more.
Why do I volunteer with DRS? For me, personally, getting involved as a volunteer with DRS has provided a real sense of purpose in that I feel we are making a significant difference to people’s lives. We try to make all our visitors feel welcome and, for our refugee and asylum seeker volunteers, we provide engaging and meaningful activities in response to their own requests and interests. DRS is a community that cares for those who have suffered extremes of danger and hardship in their countries and on the journeys to get here. It’s the least we can do to provide a welcome and support. I get angry when people say we can’t afford to help those from other countries. As a society I feel we should be better than that. As fellow human beings my view is that it’s our duty or responsibility to help those who, through no fault of their own, have faced desperate danger, hardship and discrimination. As well as having the core purpose of supporting refugees in Derbyshire and overseas in any way we can, one of the aims of DRS is to empower refugees and asylum seekers in Derby by offering English conversation and/or grammar sessions, thereby increasing confidence, integration, employability and practical skills. That is really important to me as we are working with other human beings who have past lives, often high level skills, and we want to help them achieve their aspirations. Being able to speak English is critical in their future success and we, along with other organisations with whom we collaborate, are trying to smooth the way into jobs and becoming active and worthwhile members of their communities.
What can the church and local community do?
Visit us at St Anne’s – there’s always tea/coffee and cake available as well a very warm welcome!
Collect warm clothes, shoes, blankets/sleeping bags and tents – specific needs can be found on our website and the church can act as a collection point. Either I or someone else can then arrange to get the donations to Derby.
Put together the wherewithal for food, medical and hygiene packs (lists on the website).
Make regular donations to help us pay the rent on the church hall as well as buying essential items which are not donated.
If you would like further information about Derbyshire Refugee Solidarity, do look at our website – www.derbyshirerefugeesolidarity.org – our twitter page @derbysolidarity - or our Facebook page – www.facebook.com/derbyshirerefugeesolidarity/ - where you will find contact details and information on how to get involved. Alternatively you can contact me directly at r.f.macdonald@btinternet.com And don’t forget – there’s tea/coffee and cake and a warm welcome at St Anne’s on Thursday and Saturday mornings! Careers interviews During year 11 all students will have at least one individual careers interview with the careers advisor currently employed by "Ideas 4 Careers". Students are encouraged to discuss their current ideas and are informed about the various post 16 options available. Following on from the interview they will receive a careers plan. There will be additional careers guidance during form time, assemblies and enrichment activities. We would like to give parents/carers the opportunity of attending the careers interview with your son/daughter. Phil Nelson, the careers advisor is in school on a Monday and Tuesday during school hours. If you would be interested in this offer, please can you email Phil Nelson on connexions@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk to arrange a convenient appointment. The careers service is also available to year 12 and year 13 students to discuss post 18 options.

Remaining dates to be confirmed
** From 2015 schools have been able to consider variations to term dates provided they meet the statutory requirements. With this in mind we have taken the decision to return to school one day earlier for the start of the new academic year (Tuesday 1 September 2020) and finish the autumn term one day earlier (Thursday 17 December 2020). This is to ensure a smooth start to the academic year rather than students starting back with a staggered start on Thursday or Friday. The start of the 2020-21 academic year is as follows:
Tuesday 1 September 2020 - Staff will return to school on Tuesday that will be designated as an INSET day (no students in school). Wednesday 2 September 2020 – students in years 7 and 9 only return to school Thursday 3 September 2020 – all students return to school

We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
