Sports Update Mr C Shirtcliffe (Head of PE)

Sports Fixtures Fixtures will be coming thick and fast this term in a variety of sports. A big thank you from the PE department in advance for your support. Thursday 2 March 2017 Our Year 10 Girls Netball Team will be playing a County Tournament next Thursday. The tournament will be held at Littleover in Derby and the girls will be leaving school at 12noon.

The Year 8 and Year 10 boys’ football teams will be playing on Thursday at home against Lady Manners, with a 4pm kick off.

Sports Results Both games scheduled to be played at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School this week - 22 February 2017 (rugby) and 23 February (football) were cancelled by Queen Elizabeth’s.

Our Sports Leaders and Sports Apprentices have been extremely busy supporting sporting activities not only in school, but also within our partner primary schools and across the wider community.

Tuesday 7 February Young ambassadors led assemblies in South Darley Primary and Tansley Primary Schools - well done to Sophie Hamilton Cody, Jack Rose, Lily McCrea and Julie Pritty.

Our SEN Sports Leaders attended a Derbyshire Conference at the Fairfield Centre in Buxton, where they met Paralympic athlete Ben Pipes. Well done to Julie Pritty, John Hursthouse, Joel Rogers, Chloe-Jane Elwood, Oliver Brailsford and Angel Gaunt. They will now run a project back in Highfields for their peers.

Wednesday 8 February Highfields PE and School Sport Apprentices, David Molyneux and Jordan Spencer, lead sessions for observation for their respective level 3 Apprentice qualifications.

Liberty Venn, Youth Sport Trust research representative, came to Highfields to see the Highfields Girls Active Programme in operation. Our project is highlighted as a case study for the Youth Sport Trust and we received additional funding as a result.

Y11 Girls Thursday 9 February Eight of our feeder primary schools visited Highfields to participate in sessions on Key Stage 1 Ball Skills, ably led by members of the Highfields Sports Leadership Academy.

Friday 10 February Seven feeder primary schools visited us for the Years 5 & 6 Sports Hall Athletics Event 2017. The winning school was Lea Primary. They will now go on to represent Highfields at the School Sports Partnership finals to be held in March which Highfields will host, led by members of our Sports Leadership Academy.

School News Year 9 Scientists visit Rolls Royce 25 lucky Year 9 students had the chance to spend the day at the Rolls Royce Learning and Career Development Centre in Derby. They learnt about the vast Rolls Royce business and had a useful tour of the apprenticeship area. Students were introduced to the skills of milling, turning, welding and computer numerical control (CNC).

The visit included a tour of the Heritage Centre which displays the history of aviation power plants and the development of gas turbine engines. There was also a chance to find out about jobs and apprenticeship schemes which Rolls Royce offers. Perhaps the highlight of the day was the competition to design, buy materials for and build a plane. In teams of five, students drew on the knowledge they had gained from the day's visit to complete this task. The winning team comprised Joel Hursthouse, Matthew Thompson, Jack Walters, Oliver Cairns and Matt McNee. Hayley Masters, Rolls Royce Ambassador for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Manufacturing) at the company's Manufacturing Development Programme, said that it was great to have a group of students so interested in the field of science and manufacturing.

Chemistry Teacher at Highfields School, Sharon Harrison, said, "At Highfields we work hard to cultivate links with leading companies like Rolls Royce in science, technology, engineering and manufacturing. We find visits like this inspirational for our youngsters, particularly in Year 9 when they are deciding on their GCSE choices. It's important they realise the opportunities that studying science can lead to and we are very fortunate here in Derbyshire to have Rolls Royce on our doorstep."

Dance to Success Last month Dance 4 visited Highfields School as part of their advanced training programme (CAT) and ran a contemporary dance workshop with 25 students aged 14 and 15. As a result, a third of these students (eight) were invited to the CAT auditions held in March.

Katie Keating (Dance Teacher) said, "We are really proud of the effort and commitment our students gave to the workshop and are so pleased for the individuals who were asked to audition; it's a fantastic opportunity."

We are extremely proud of the dance talent that we nurture at Highfields. The school's annual Evening of Dance on 8 February featured students from Year 7 through to Sixth Form, showcasing dances they have choreographed themselves in and outside of school. It also featured local dance school Essential Energy. Year 11 students performed their exam dances, Years 7-10 showcased class work and there were also performances by lower school High Flyers dance club. Sixth former Hollie Wells choreographed a dance with Year 9 students who attend the dance club that she runs herself.

As part of the Peak Dance Festival Year 9 and Year 10 students will also be performing at the Buxton Opera House on 20 March.

I currently undertake the role of Associate Member providing support to the Governing function in particular to the Finance and Resources subcommittee.

Parent/Carer Notices Safeguarding our students - Child Sexual Exploitation Over three weeks from 27 February, in partnership with the Derby City & Derbyshire Safeguarding Children Board and the Derbyshire Police, we will be screening a film to Years 7 to 11 and providing activities and discussion on the subject of the dangers of online grooming, as part of our continued commitment to educate students around child sexual exploitation.

You may have seen recent national media publicity about the case of a 15-year-old schoolgirl from Leicestershire who was groomed online last November and subsequently raped, and murdered by her groomer’s next door neighbour. All criminal proceedings in this case are now over, with her groomer sentenced to 12 years in prison and her killer sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum recommendation of 35 years.

What makes this case so shocking and rare is not just the outcome, but the speed of events.

Kayleigh Haywood received a Facebook message from a man she didn’t know (Luke Harlow) on 31 October 2015. 15 days later, after an exchange of more than 2,600 text messages with her groomer, Kayleigh was raped and murdered by Harlow’s neighbour (Stephen Beadman).

Leicestershire Police commissioned the film and has now made it available to all forces in the UK to use in Schools. In making the film, they consulted widely, both locally and nationally, with the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (COEP), with Headteachers, and with Child Sexual Exploitation Practitioners across the partnership landscape. Upon their advice, the film has been deemed suitable to be shown to 11 year olds and upwards, provided those screenings take place in controlled circumstances, with police officers, social workers and or other practitioners present at screenings, to answer questions, to manage reaction and possible disclosure, and to provide advice and information about online safety. If shown without any audience prior awareness as a trailer in a cinema, it would carry a certificate of 15.

The activity in school will include the film which is approximately 7 minutes, and two clips, one of the Headteacher, Eddie Green, where Kayleigh went to school and one of the Leicestershire Deputy Police Constable, Rodger Banister. The activity will include preparation for students, include workshops and an opportunity for question and answer and discussion which should prove highly effective in in raising awareness of: • • • • • •

Healthy Relationships Safe Internet Use Risky Behaviour The Grooming Process Child Sexual Exploitation Where young people can go for help and advice

Child Sexual Exploitation is a highly sensitive subject and every care has been taken to ensure that the production is hard-hitting and relevant without being graphic or offensive. The issues are raised and discussed in a manner entirely relevant and suitable for the target age group.

With high profile cases around the country currently making the news on a regular basis, it is all of our duties to raise awareness of this subject. Councils, charities, support agencies, schools, parents and carers all need to engage with and acknowledge this issue in order to give young people the tools and knowledge that they need to keep themselves and their friends safe.

Newsletter Year 9 and Year 11 Immunisations – 1 March A reminder that the Immunisation Team will be vaccinating Year 9 and Year 11 students on Wednesday 1 March 2017 for the following: •

Meningococcal ACWY (MenACWY) vaccine - this protects against four different types of meningococcal bacteria that can cause meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). These diseases are very serious and can kill if not diagnosed early.

•

Teenage Booster vaccine - this helps to protect against diphtheria, tetanus and polio.

Diphtheria is a serious disease that can damage the heart and nervous system and in severe cases can kill. Tetanus is a painful disease affecting the nervous system which can lead to muscle spasms, causing breathing problems and can kill. Polio is a virus that attacks the nervous system which can cause permanent paralysis of muscles. If it affects the chest muscles or the brain, polio can kill.

GCSE Design & Technology Controlled Assessment Day – 2 March All students taking GCSE Design & Technology in Graphic Products, Electronic Products and Product Design will be carrying out their Controlled Assessment on Thursday 2 March, all day.

Students are based in the Design & Technology department for all of their lessons on that day. It has in the past, proved to be an extremely productive day and enables them to make significant progress in completion of the coursework element, attendance therefore is very important.

Year 10 Work Experience There are still 49 students who have not returned their Work Experience form. Please could we ask for your support to check with your son/daughter and remind them to return their forms within the next few days. This is to enable the necessary health & safety checks to be made in advance (checks can take up to three months to process depending on the type of placement chosen). Without health & safety approval students will not be allowed on placements. If you have any queries, please contact Mrs Giles in the Life and Work Skills Department.

SEND Parents & Carers World Café Coffee Morning - 8 March Wednesday 8 March from 9.15am - 10.15am at Lumsdale site. Parents and carers of students with additional needs are very welcome to come along for coffee and cake and discuss special educational needs and their child's provision.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Careers Information & Events To showcase STEM courses and career opportunities and to celebrate International Women’s Day, the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths colleges at Derby and Sheffield Hallam Universities have organised a number of events to be held throughout March. Taking place during evenings and weekends, these events are open to the general public and can be booked using the links below:

In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings we are endeavouring to send future communication to parents/carers via email only from 24 April 2017 (following the Easter holiday).

Our aim is that, only student’s Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.

Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year.

We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.
