New Active Schools Manager – Rural Derbyshire School Sports Partnership

Chris Bethell has taken up the post of Active Schools Manager for the Rural Derbyshire School Sport Partnership (RDSSP), replacing Janice Price who retired in August. Chris will be working with the Partnership’s schools – Highfields, Anthony Gell, Hope Valley, Lady Manners and Queen Elizabeth’s, along with 64 primary schools attached to secondary schools.

Chris Bethell - Active Schools Manager, RDSSP

I am excited to take on the role of Active Schools Manager across RDSSP. I have always had a keen interest in sport and physical activity, and since leaving Derby University in 2014, I have worked in other school sport partnerships, as well as an extended services leader and PE lead in primary schools. I am passionate about providing a wide range of opportunities in PE, sport and physical activity as well as providing equal opportunities to access them.

My favourite sports are Karate (4th Dan Black belt - now retired), athletics which I competed in Decathlon nationally and am a big fan of the NBA. Although due to injury I no longer play competitive sport, I still have a massive passion for it and still like to keep fit and active.

The PE Life Skills Award

The PE Life Skills Award, developed in partnership with the Youth Sports Trust, is an accreditation programme that provides schools with a framework to recognise and reward the development of essential life skills in and through PE.

Develop Pupils’ Physical Literacy Through High Quality PE and Physical Activity

The provision of high quality physical education has the potential to equip young people with essential life skills that build their wider confidence and reinforce the benefits of an active lifestyle. By underpinning PE with a framework that recognises and rewards their behaviours, pupils stand to gain awareness, knowledge and understanding of its importance to their wider wellbeing and maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle.

Developed in partnership with the Youth Sports Trust, the PE Life Skills Award represents a reward system for learners, recognising the demonstration of positive behaviours in four key areas: emotional, cognitive, physical and social at four distinct levels: experiencing, understanding, applying and valuing The aim of the programme is to demonstrate learners’ development towards achieving ‘Physical Literacy’, which is described as “The motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life.” (IPLA, 2017).

Pupils reflect on their experiences in PE using a completion record with support from their teachers. As they progress through their studies, these reflections are assessed against the PE Life Skills Award framework, allowing teachers to gain an insight into their level of comprehension about the four elements contained within the concept of physical literacy (emotional, cognitive, physical and social). Learners record these reflections in a journal, demonstrating their progression and ultimately receiving an accredited award in recognition of their skills and abilities.

Under 15 Girls progress through to the 3rd round of the English School FA Cup

On Wednesday evening the under 15 girls travelled in high spirits to Kirk Hallam Academy, they demonstrated excellent professionalism discussing the tactics and formation that Miss Paley had meticulously prepared. Once there, the girls started well and quickly went into the lead, and before long through great football we took a 4-goal lead.

The score at half time was 5 – 0 to Highfields, and the girls looked in complete control, this said the Kirk Hallam put up an excellent fight and made it difficult for us to break through. During the second half we scored a few more goals and progressing through to the next round. A special mention to Dixie who scored 4 goals and the goal of the game came from Ruby with a screamer from outside the box.

Well done to all girls involved in a great victory, you did Miss Paley proud!

Under 18 Boys progress through to the quarter finals of the County Cup

The Under 18 boys also played in the first County Cup game of the year on Wednesday night, this was a special occasion as it was the first competitive game on the new Astro turf. What a start it was. The game was played in excellent spirit and Highfields were able to use the flat surface to play some exceptional football against a hardworking Swanwick side. Quite quickly we took the lead and managed to settle into the game again playing flowing football.

We had a substantial lead at half time, Swanwick battled hard and scored a penalty in the second half. Overall an excellent display and the boys progress 7-1 and are through to the quarter finals of the County Cup.

A special mention for the leading goal scorer Oliver who scored 5 goals. Massive thank you to Mr Moss and Mr Waller for managing the team and refereeing respectively.

Under 13 Girls demonstrated excellent Highfields resilience in the English School FA Cup

On Thursday afternoon the mixed year 7 and 8 girls football team travelled to Wingfield Academy in Rotherham. The girls once again were chomping at the bit discussing the formation and tactics the head coach Miss Paley had relayed.

We were up against it from the start with a larger than expected pitch and goals, but our girls demonstrated the Highfields spirit and went for it. The first half saw some great passing moves in spells, even though we were up against it, we defended well and went into the interval 1-0 down. In the second half we managed several shots on target, but ultimately the large pitch took its toll and we were unable to score and conceded a few more goals.

All of the girls merited praise for their resilience, and on the way home we discussed next steps should we play a similar team again. Well done to all involved, on to the next game!
