Newsletter Message from the headteacher I was on the way to work on Wednesday morning when a thick fog enveloped the car as I crossed Matlock moor. It was the kind of fog that is so dense you imagine that you’ll emerge to find that it’s 1943 and Britain is still at war (well, that’s the kind of thing I imagine anyway). Happy Talk by Captain Sensible was playing on the radio and I found myself thinking about Ofsted. You may or may not be aware that a new Ofsted schedule has just been launched. This is major news for educators because it usually signals a change in what inspectors are looking for. At the moment people like me are reading each inspection report as it comes out to see what it reveals about how inspectors are evaluating schools. At these times a mini industry springs up to provide schools with an insight into how to impress inspectors when they show up. After you have been working in education for a while you begin to see Ofsted in context. My last school was evaluated as ‘requires improvement’ and, two years later, as ‘outstanding’. As someone who was in a key role at the school during that period I have to say that, as far as I could see, the school was a pretty great place to be on both occasions. The key difference was that we had a different set of inspectors each time. My headteacher agreed about this and we refrained from putting out the ‘outstanding’ banners at the school’s entrance because we hadn’t done so when the same outfit judged us as ‘requiring improvement’. The thing is that real educators are motivated by the needs of their students rather than the changing tastes of our regulator. This being said, we are, of course, taking full notice of how this framework is being delivered, if only to understand how best to discuss our school with inspectors when eventually they turn up. Luckily for us we have an inspector in Mr Cole who he keeps us informed around issues like this. In lessons this week I found Y7 students making working models of human limbs. I initially feared that, given my recent reading around the menacing potential of robots, this was part of a project which would see crazed humanoids taking over the school. At this point, however, students had only got as far as the elbow (see inset) so I think we are safe for a few weeks at least. Elsewhere I headed for a cover lesson as SLT often do. In it I found one of our cover supervisors overseeing a really focused lesson based around multiplication using personalised pathways on MyMaths. I think that our cover supervisors do a great job in insulating our children against the risk of learning slippage when one of teachers is unwell. Our sports leaders have been working hard again this term under the direction of Mrs Allen and I would like to express my congratulations in particular to four students who received prestigious awards at last week’s Derbyshire School Sports Awards Ceremony, for their contribution to sports leaders during their time at Highfields. Harry (year 13 last year) was presented with ‘Young Official of the Year’, Alisha (year 13) received ‘Volunteer of the Year’ and Holly (year 13) and Evie (year 11) were awarded ‘Young Leaders of the Year’. I am extremely proud of their achievements and the work of our sports leadership academy – congratulations! I would like to end by wishing our students, staff and families a lovely and relaxing half term. A Marsh Headteacher

Highfields PTFA Meet the PTFA on Wednesday 6 November 6.30pm at Designate, Smedley Street, Matlock - there will be cake!

Needs

YOU!

Highfields School is one of only a small number of secondary schools in the UK that still has a PTFA raising vital funds for the school. In the last three years we have funded a wide range of projects and equipment for the school including books for the libraries, new PE equipment such as footballs and football nets, video cameras and tripods for film studies, microphones for drama, blackout curtains in the Bowler Hall and drama studio, the schools subscription to My Maths, the lower school cookery clubs, pastoral care items for the school offices and the lower school nurture group. We raise funds through selling refreshments and running raffles at school performances and organising events such as quiz nights. However, we need new volunteers and members to help continue the vital work we do. It’s a great way to meet other parents and staff, it’s fun, relaxed and friendly. Commitment can range from attending the termly meeting or donating an hour to help sell refreshments at an event or just donating a raffle prize or two. We would love you to come and find out more about Highfields PTFA and meet the team. We look forward to meeting you on Wednesday 6 November 6.30pm at Designate, Smedley Street, Matlock.

We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
