Our sports leaders are usually extremely busy supporting sporting activities not only in school, but also within our partner primary schools and across the wider community. This year for the start of the year initially we are looking at alternative ways for our sports leaders to work and we will update you in our newsletter.

Further information on sports leadership can be found on the school website: http://www.highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk/students/sports-leadership/

2020 Girls Active Awards Success

The 2020 Girls Active awards ceremony took place virtually on Tuesday 3 November – oh what a night!

The awards were selected by a star-studded judging panel comprising of olympic gold-medal swimmer Becky Adlington as a judge for the 2020 Girls Active and YST Young Activist Awards, along with an all-star panel including Paralympic cyclist Kadeena Cox, Paralympic wheelchair racer Tanni Grey-Thompson and professional skater Jenna Downing among others.

Alisha and Holly from Highfields were nominated. Alisha was in the top five students nationally for the ‘Young Leader of the Year’ for Girls Active and Holly also achieve a place in the top 5 for the ‘Young Leader Growing in Potential’ nomination.

The icing on the cake was in the penultimate award of the night Highfields School was announced as the ‘School of the Year’ for Girls Active. This is an outstanding achievement for the school. The accolades building up to the awards announcements were in recognition of all the students had achieved and for the staff who have supported them.

Our work has been building over the last five years since the programme has been established nationally and Highfields has been on board since the beginning. We are very proud of what the girls have implemented and the continued commitment to the project across the school. The selection board were impressed by the involvement in particular of the sixth form girls and the support of other staff across the school to develop and give opportunity for sixth form students to participate by being active and leading others.

The role of the Voice of Sport group in school means that girls have a ‘voice’ and equal access to facilities and sports. Particular praise was given for the development of girls football at Highfields, which has a huge drive nationally at present.

The evening saw Chief Executive Officer of YST, Ali Oliver, give the following opening address:

As the Youth Sport Trust celebrates its 25th year of changing young lives through sport, I couldn’t think of a better way to mark the occasion than delivering the Young Activist awards, thanks to Sky Sports, and the Girls Active Awards in partnership with Women in Sport and Sport England.

All of the award winners are truly deserving and have shown huge passion and commitment for activating change not just for themselves, but for others around them. Many of them have helped

support their communities through the challenges of the pandemic. There is compelling evidence that young people who volunteer and take part in social action develop critical skills for employment and adulthood.

Through Youth Sport Trust programmes, young people develop their confidence and leadership skills along with an appetite for making a difference in the world. The young people we are honouring have been empowered to use sport to address the issues that matter to their generation. I am incredibly proud of them all.

The host for the evening was former British sprinter and BBC radio presenter of the Women in Sport Show, Jeanette Kwakye.

Sports Leaders Update

Our year 10 sports leaders were in training during lunch on Wednesday 4 November for their level 1 award. They were leading each other for their practical observation – they all worked really hard.

Year 12 level 3 sports leaders met on Friday 6 November to observe one another leading as a practical observation and verification.

Training opportunities

This week both Mrs Allen and Mrs Wildgoose were taking part in virtual training opportunities.

Mrs Allen attended the Youth Sport Trust Top Sports Ability training and Youth Sport Trust Boys Move project, and Mrs Wildgoose participated in the British Schools Orienteering training.

Whole school extra-curricular sports clubs

The PE department are running the following clubs for students across both sites. These are much reduced to what would usually be on offer but are compliant with the latest Covid-19 guidance. Full details are available from the PE department.
