Sports Update Mr C Shirtcliffe (Head of PE)
Sports Fixtures Wednesday 8 February Next week our first team boys rugby team are playing away on Wednesday against Queen Elizabeth Grammar School - 2.30pm kick off.
Sports Results The first team played well in spells in their final competitive game for Highfields in the quarter finals of the County Cup but lost 7 - 0 to a polished Repton first team. The Year 13 team have had an excellent football adventure at school with many successes. All helped by their manager Mr D Moss who has steered them through the years.
We had two friendly development games on Wednesday night against Anthony Gell for under-16s boys hockey and under-16's Girls Netball. The boys lost 2 - 1 in a well fought game in which our boys played some excellent hockey with a goal from Sam Elliott on his debut topping it off. The Netballers had some good passages of play but we couldn't get the ball in the hoop. We lost by a 9 goal margin.

Newsletter Sports Leaders Mrs Allen (School Sports Co-Ordinator) World Champion Paratriathlete, Steve Judge, is set to come to work with some of our Year 10 students shortly. Steve will come to deliver a Year 10 assembly soon. Thursday 26 January: Some of the Year 9 and 10 Sports Leaders and six of our feeder primary schools sent staff to be trained in the coaching of High 5 Netball. We all received excellent tuition by Val Kindred, one of England Netball’s Development Coaches.
Friday 27 January: PE Apprentice, Chelsea Elliott, supported the delivery of activity to some of the Rural Derbyshire mid-day supervisors with partnership SGO Janice Price and James Bates at the Whitworth Centre. Chelsea has a two-day placement working with the SGO as well as having placement experiences at Middleton Primary, Youlgrave Primary and Highfields. The school’s Voice of Sport Group had their first meeting of 2017. The Voice of Sport Group has been running at Highfields for 12 years and meets every month to discuss issues around PE and school sport with representatives from each year group involved. An exciting project got under way with British Orienteering. After discussion and planning with the Chair of British Orienteering Friday saw the British Orienteering Project come alive. Judith Holt, Chair, came into school to give a training session to the PE and School Sports Apprentices in the use of the electronic dibber system. This is to enable them to use in their secondary and primary school placements over the next sixth months. There will be more to follow on this project, but needless to say we will be starting a Highfields Orienteering Club with a view to taking a team to the National Championships in September 2017, and getting as many students participating in orienteering at all levels and also to involve you, our parents/carers, in a few taster sessions with your children. Friday 3 February: Rex Bleakman will train our Apprentices and staff from Rural Derbyshire Schools in a teacher qualification to be able to deliver Orienteering. There will be a flyer coming to advertise also how you can get involved at the local club, Derwent Valley Orienteers exciting times ahead!

Newsletter Sports Leadership Academy: The Annual Awards Evening will take place at upper school (Lumsdale site) on Thursday 6 April from 6-8pm in the Wheeldon Hall. Students who are involved in the Sports Leaders programme will have brought a letter home to invite you to celebrate with them their achievements this past year.

School News Library Highfields has been awarded a top prize in a national competition by The Siobhan Dowd Trust. The Siobhan Dowd Trust selected Highfields for this prize in recognition of our work to encourage reading for pleasure. The school won £500 to be spent at Scarthin Books in Cromford. Following on from lower school’s visit to the bookshop, students from upper site Book Club visited last week to select new books for Lumsdale library. Staff at Scarthin Books were very welcoming and supportive. David Booker, Manager at Scarthin said, “It's always exciting to see young readers getting so enthused about books and gives us hope for the long term future of independent bookshops. The young visitors from your school were a joy to host and were a real credit to your school we look forward to many more visits from you, them and their parents in the near future!” Diane Brown, librarian at Lumsdale was delighted to have the ideas and input from Book Club students. After choosing a varied range of new titles for the library, the students rounded off their visit with a welcome piece of cake in the book store’s café.
Mock Interviews for Year 11 Students Year 11 students had the opportunity to experience the taste of a real interview on Tuesday morning. Our local business community, along with representatives from local colleges and our school Governors gave up their time generously to interview our students. We are incredibly grateful to all involved for their commitment to the school. The students were put through their paces which gave them a valuable insight into what a job interview can entail. Students found the experience extremely beneficial and it opened their eyes to what lies beyond the school environment. Rebecca Wray, Y11 student, said "The interview was enjoyable. It made me think about my positive qualities and replicated the environment of a real interview without being overly scary. The interviewer was considerate and probed answers that made me think about myself."

Newsletter Year 11 GCSE Food Controlled Assessment The Year 11 Food students produced some absolutely outstanding work on 2 February during their final make! Students excelled and worked with determination and focus to produce products that showed a wide range of skill. As a result of their hard work, the overall impact is amazing and can be clearly seen in the photos below that show the end product. “I am an extremely proud teacher!�- Mrs Hakin.

Highfields School Governing Body Update Governance Leadership We are very sorry that Tim Diggle has had to stand down as Co-Chair of Governors due to pressure of work. Tim and I have worked well as Co-Chairs and I have valued his experience and wisdom at a time when we have had to make some very difficult decisions. Tim and I also share a love of the performing arts and so will no doubt continue to meet up at concerts and performances. I hope he will be able to contribute further to the work of the Governing Body and the life of the school. I am pleased that Helen Crane has agreed to become Co-Chair. Helen was previously a Parent Governor and is now Co-opted. She is Chair of the Student and Community Links Committee as well as being on the Teaching and Learning Committee, the Pupil Premium Group and the Strategy Monitoring Group. I have worked with Helen for some time now and value her experience of developing strategy in the voluntary sector as well as her commitment to the school and its community engagement. Paul Steeples will continue as Vice-Chair and Julie Lane, a relatively new Governor, has agreed to become Chair of the Finance and Premises Committee. We have already benefited from Julie's financial and management experience and will continue to do so during forthcoming challenging times.

Newsletter Planning for the future On Thursday 26 January the Full Governing Body met with the Senior Leadership Team for an afternoon and evening to look to the future of the school. We face an increasingly uncertain future with serious challenges for the school. We recognise that many staff and departments are faced with very difficult circumstances. However, despite these, colleagues are working hard to continue to provide the best learning experiences for all our students. Difficult decisions will have to be made but alongside challenges there may also be exciting opportunities to, as someone put it on a post-it, 'be brave!'. The Leadership of our school intend to do just that. Whilst we certainly acknowledge that we face significant challenges as we work together to make Highfields School the best it can be, we are also confident in our collective capacity to firstly work together to form an aspirational vision for the future of our school, and secondly to go on to realise it. We look forward to engaging all members of the school community in this endeavour. What you can be assured of is that all your Governors and Senior Leaders are committed to Highfields being an outstanding school which, as our Core Purpose states, is an inclusive, happy community that values every individual and inspires them to achieve their full potential. We are sure we can also look to the support of parents and carers, staff and the wider community to work with us to achieve this.
Highfields School Governor Awards Governors recently agreed to establish an award scheme "in recognition of an outstanding contribution to student learning and/or wellbeing, either to an individual or to a team/group of people." The awards are not for the most liked or popular person as sometimes they will have to make difficult decisions in the best interests of students. They are more interested in making a difference to students' learning and wellbeing and inspiring them to go that extra step to achieve greater things. We will invite nominations from students, teachers, support staff, parents/carers, Governors or the local community. Awards can be made to those who impact on student learning and wellbeing in a variety of contexts: teachers, support staff, sports leaders/apprentices/mentors - whether in class, on field courses, around the school and at breaks, during extra curricula activities such as sports or performing arts. At the same time, as I wrote above, we will also acknowledge those who continue to work hard to support all students and each other in difficult times. All your efforts are appreciated!

Parent/Carer Notices Year 8 & Year 11 Parent Consultation Evenings All Parent Consultation Evenings are held in the Sports Hall at Lumsdale (Upper Site) from 4pm until 7pm (the last appointment time is 6.45pm). These evenings give an opportunity for you to discuss your child’s progress with subject staff and we would encourage you to bring your son/daughter to the meeting so they can play a key role in the discussion. The Year 8 Parent Consultation Evening will take place on Tuesday 7 February 2017 – please ensure your child had made appointments with subject staff. The Year 11 Parent Consultation Evening will be held on Tuesday 21 February 2017 – as this evening is the first Tuesday back after half term, please ensure your child books appointments with their subject teachers before the break. This evening is aimed at providing parents/carers with practical help and advice on how best to support your child through the GCSE exams in the summer. We very much hope that parents / carers of Year 11 students will be able to attend.

Highfields Parents, Teachers & Friends Association (PTFA) The PTFA are a group of parents, teachers and friends of Highfields School who raise funds to support the life and work of the school. Helping at PTFA events is good fun and rewarding and we would love more people to be involved! We are looking for volunteers to help with serving refreshments at the Evening of Dance (8 February), Evening of Theatre (9 February) and Easter Concert (28 March). Please email the PTFA Secretary (ptasecretary@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk) if you are interested. Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year. We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.
Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department. Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.
