Sports Leaders News Mrs Allen (School Sports Co-ordinator)

Our sports leaders are usually extremely busy supporting sporting activities not only in school, but also within our partner primary schools and across the wider community. This year for the start of the year initially we are looking at alternative ways for our sports leaders to work and we will update you in our newsletter.

Youth Sport Trust – Girls Active Awards

Alisha and Holly make the shortlist of YST’S Girls Active Awards

Alisha and Holly, both students at Highfields School last year, have been shortlisted for the Girls Active ‘Leader of the Year’ and ‘Leader with the most personal growth’ national awards recognising the impact girls are having on their PE curriculum and school sport.

The Girls Active Awards are a celebration of the work girls are leading to get more girls active and enjoying PE and physical activity. Since 2015, over 800 primary and secondary schools have been involved in the Girls Active programme across the country. Girls Active aims to get more girls active and enjoying PE, school sport and physical activity. The programme is developed by children’s charity the Youth Sport Trust, delivered in partnership with Women in Sport and This Girl Can and funded through Sport England National Lottery funding.

Holly went to Bahrain in February with Highfields staff as part of a small team from the UK with YST International to coach girls in the Middle East as well as football development with girls in Highfields School. Alisha has been coaching girls in school and Darley Dale in football for a few years. Both girls are a part of the sports leadership academy in Highfields School.

Both girls reportedly were excited about the award nominations. Ali Oliver, Chief Executive of the Youth Sport Trust, said:

“The Girls Active Awards are an important part of the journey for the girls through the programme, they allow them to reflect on and celebrate their own personal experiences and the impact of their work. Girls Active is as much about getting young people active as it is about harnessing young people’s talents and encouraging them to make a difference to others both in and through sport. Our research around barriers to girls participating in physical activity and sport tells us that one of the best ways to engage girls is through encouragement from their peers - and that is exactly what Girls Active is about. To date, the Awards have recognised some incredible achievement of girls, as positive peer influencers and as participants and we look forward to celebrating this year’s successful young women.”

The 2020 Girls Active and YST Young Activist Awards will take place as a virtual event on Tuesday 3 November.
