Issue 04: 27 September 2019

Newsletter Message from the headteacher I’m trying to look on the bright side this week. Staff (and the community) took a significant knock when they learned that Phil Hurst had died aged 58 early on Friday. Mr Hurst was at Highfields from its inception on Lumsdale site 37 years ago and touched many lives both in school and as part of the cricket club at Darley Dale. I will write to you imminently about arrangements for the funeral; I trust that you will understand the level of grief and sadness amongst our staff team and therefore support my efforts to help them attend the funeral next Friday. The busy early part of the week meant that I was unable to get to Lea Green and Y7 activity days. We did, however, have senior leaders in attendance and they and year 7 students I have since spoken to said it was ‘brilliant’. In lessons I again saw a huge range of learning. I’ve asked particularly to work with our science department this year and so I really look forward each week to getting into a range of science lessons. What interests me most (in all lessons, not just science) is students’ contextual understanding of the stuff they’re learning. It used to be the case that if you asked a student why they were learning something they would point at the teacher and say, ‘because she told me to’. But I’m hoping more and more that Highfields students are able to understand why they would want to explain in a bit more detail the world around them. For example, when I came across a student peering down a microscope the other day, it transpired after a few seconds of discussion that the point of the lesson was to understand the difference between plant and animal cells. The student let me look at some onion cells and briefly pointed out the differences. I asked why we would need to know that and he fairly quickly suggested that medical science for one depended on understanding cells and their structure. Anyway, I thought it was interesting. So both the mood and the weather have been a little sombre this week. One of the great things which I understand Mr Hurst typified was the resilience and resolve of our community to pull together and bounce back when we encounter setbacks. I know this will be the case next week. Have a nice weekend. A Marsh Headteacher

Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices

Polite request – dropping off and collecting students We have received a complaint from the Rees Partnership based at Lumsdale as there is an increasing problem with parents/carers using their car park as a drop off and pick up point. We have been asked to remind parents/carers that the Rees Partnership car park is private property and should not be used to drop off/collect students. We are always keen to be good neighbours and to protect the safety of all pedestrians and road users. We ask that parents/carers exercise care and consideration during busy times and take care not to block driveways, use private car parks of local businesses or enter/park in the school car park allocated for staff, visitors and buses unless express permission has been given from the school. If parents/carers require access to the school site based on physical need, please write to the appropriate member of staff below to request permission:  

Starkholmes (lower school site) - Mr Rodgers, Associate Assistant Headteacher Lumsdale (upper school site) – Mr Hodkin, Assistant Headteacher/SENCO

Thank you for your co-operation.

Careers evening – 14 November 2019 We are delighted to invite you to attend our careers evening at Highfields upper school site on Thursday 14 November 2019 from 6pm to 8pm. The evening will be attended by further education colleges, higher education institutions, training providers and local business. This will be in the form of information stands giving you the opportunity to talk to a number of professionals and representatives from a range of organisations. This promises to be a great evening and a fantastic opportunity to find out more first-hand what is available post-16 whether it is apprenticeships, traineeships, further education or higher education courses. We would like to ask if there are parents/carers who would like to take part to promote their own business? If so, please contact Mrs Giles for further information on the main school number (01629 581888).

Newsletter Sports Leaders UK Regional Leader of the Year Award Last Friday (20 September) was a proud moment for Harry Rudkin (level 3 sports leader) and Highfields School. Harry was awarded the Sports Leaders UK regional trophy as Leader of the Year 2018-19. Nominations for Leader of the Year were received from local areas and Harry was successful in making it through to the regional round where he was required to produce a video of his journey through school documenting his achievements and number of hours he has given to volunteering in sport. Harry was one of four nominees selected by the regional panel out of 100 entries to gain the Leader of the Year award. Harry commented that sports leaders has helped him communicate with individuals and teams, taught him time management and enabled him to be the best he can. This has led to him to secure a place at university to continue his sports coaching. He thank ed staff at Highfields for encouraging him along the way and the support his parents have given him in to achieve his successes.

Left to right: Rob Watson, Harry Rudkin, Andrew Marsh

Rob Watson from Sports Leaders UK presented the award at Highfields. We are very proud of all Harry has achieved whilst in the Highfields Sports Leadership Academy. Harry is a fantastic referee and leader – we wish him well as he moves on to university.

Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiries The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is reception. Reception staff will ask you what the issue is in order for them to help with queries or refer you to a member of staff who can. Pastoral enquiries & sickness absence If you have any concerns about a student, please contact the form tutor in the first instance either by email or telephone. Newsletter School to home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
